Why does Detroit keep Osgood?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

Osgood is on the Wings because he wants to be here, and because he is an excellent insurance policy in the event that Hasek's groin acts up on him.

And if Dom weren't here next season, I'd imagine Osgood would at least get a crack at the starter position.

yeah dude, was Ozzie all that bad last year? I watched him for a majority of games and he played pretty darn well. It kinda makes me mad that a player that loves to be a Wing doesn't get any respect. IMO he came here as a backup eventhough he's been a starter and he's still a Wing. Ozzie is great, especially for a backup so don't complain!

I agree with the sentiments echoed thus far. Surprise for sure as well at the actual thread topic. Sometimes I do feel a little bad for him because he could easily start elsewhere, but it's really nice having a guy around who cares more about being part of this team than making money and getting all the glory. He knows he has a role here and he fills it admirably. I'm definitely not going to be upset should he get a chance to run with the starting slot.

I've been saying it since we brought Hasek in for the first time in '02, in all these years, goaltending hasn't really been our issue. We've won when our team consistently scores and lost when we can't catch a break scoring. Year after year sans ONE year when we were sporting a truly mediocre goalie (Legace 05/06) in the playoffs has our issue been one that can be traced to goaltending. I'm not saying Hasek didn't help in '02, but I am saying with Osgood starting, we still win the Cup in '02. Any year Osgood, Cujo or Hasek has started has been a year where we were good enough to win in net and not good enough to win in the opposing teams zone. You can have the greatest goalie in the world, but if you don't score, unless your goalie is completely giving games away like Legace did when he got his shot, you've got a solid chance to win.

dude, look at Hasek in the playoffs. I was like you once, but look at the freakin playoffs. Hasek played his freaking ass off. 16 wins, 7 loses, but 6 shutouts. 6 shut outs in 2002. Dude, we had pretty much the same teams with Cujo and Legace. When did they ever get 6 shutouts? Hasek is a gamer when it comes to the playoffs.IDK how you don't see that.

I'm sure, even though we don't really hear too much about it, that Ozzie plays a large role in the locker room as well. Even if it's playing jokes like putting his pads in Berts locker, etc, those types of things add to the cohesiveness of a team.

The Wings keep Ozzie because he's a good goalie and an even better teammate, plus he wants to be a Red Wing. I don't doubt he could start somewhere else. He has, and did a better job than most (for the Isles and Blues). But he likes it here, and the Wings love him. I'd say he's found a good spot and both Ozzie and the Wings would be crazy to mess with the chemistry.

As for not needing Hasek to win, the facts say different. The Wings didn't score this season either. Somehow, they managed to win the conference and get within four games of a Cup - oddly enough for the first tiime since Hasek left in '02. People can interpret things however they want, I guess. Those who discount Dom's contributions to this team and its ability to win are simply denying the facts. The Wings themselves know what he means to the team, and that includes Ozzie. He's a hockey-savvy guy. In a world where ego rules, Ozzie actually has the presence of mind to understand his role on the team. Money can't buy that trait.

Why does Detroit even keep Osgood? Is it just in case Hasek gets hurt? The guy could easily be a starter on another team. I kinda feel bad for a guy with 300 wins who has to sit on the bench all season. Even if Hasek retired this season Detroit still wouldn't have started him. I don't understand the point in keeping him why don't the Wings try to get something for him?

At this point in his career Osgood is just looking for a paycheque... his best days are long in the past. He is a capable backup and that's about it.

We got bounced those years because we couldn't score. There's one specific thing that always rings true about Ozzie. He *always* plays very, very well in the post season. I can't think of a single time where the Wings, Isles, or Blues lost due to him. He turns it on big time the second the playoffs start. *I'm not saying you're blaming him or anything..* I'm just throwing it out there.

And I disagree in that he can only be a starter on a mediocre or bad team. Ozzie is a very capable starter. The guy is up there with the best of them career, performance, and state wise. And no I'm not talking about the past. I feel he'd be just as good now.

The OSGOOD blinders are on big time... He was once a good enough starter on the best team in the NHL and his numbers were a product of team effort. At this point he could not be a starter on a good team, because with him in net it would not be a good team. So what if he has 300 wins thats all on the past!

Wins are usually in the past.

I never heard of a goalie winning in the future.

Tell that the Nashville Predators and they probably won't agree...

Oh I was just going to say he was our secret weapon against the Preds...even though the Preds will probably be terrible now.

Great minds think alike!

Touché! love it.

We should change the thread title to "Why Doesn't Detroit Keep Osgood?" :P

Indeed :!: Forever.

Definitely. Both Cujo and Ozzy get a lot of flack around here (none moreso than Ozzy), but scoring was the biggest problem in those early exits.

Against Vancouver in 02 the Wings were only held to less than 3 goals in one game. They scored 3, 2, 3, 4, 4, and 6 goals in that series. Dom played great that year, but it took him and the team a while to get rolling.

And this year against Calgary, Detroit lost every time they didn't score more than two goals, until the final game they won 2-1 in double OT. Round 2 was the same way. Detroit lost every game they didn't score more than 2, until the clinching game they won 2-0.

With Cujo in 03, the Wings never managed more than 2 goals and never had a chance to get going. They didn't lose because of Cujo.

Detroit had plenty of scoring this year, and they made it deep into the playoffs. Go figure.

Detroit keeps Osgood because he is the team's...

(1) Ass-kicking bartender

(2) Team prankster (a.k.a. class clown)

Seriously, Osgood wants to remain in Detroit, the loyalty between the two seems mutual since he came back from St. Louis, he's no world beater by any stretch of the imagination but he could still start when needed, and is probably the best "insurance policy" out there if Hasek gets injured for a long stretch this upcoming season (and last season).

Aside from fear of being flipped (of course!), #2 is probly precisely why Bert left. Who needs to pick up after Ozzie... Bert sure don't :P

He's got bartending skills? Ozzie... love.... increasing..

You are relentless with the Berkhoel signing. And this is before the guy even played a single game in a Red Wings jersey!

Goalies are like diapers here in Detroit. They are changed often, and for the same reason.
