Guerin is the new captain of NYI

Another knee-jerk reaction by the Islanders.

I don't understand this. Guerin is like origami: He folds under pressure. He's the exact opposite of a leader. And yet you got guys like Sillinger or Witt that are defined leaders who got snubbed.

I will admit that Guerin is far and beyond a better leader than Yashin though. No matter who it is, it's a breath of fresh air for any Islanders fans since it isn't Yashin!

Not every team is lucky enough to have had a guy like Yzerman in their organization. We're a little spoiled with this whole captain thing.

But I still think Guerin's a dick and if he plays for the Isles anything like he did for the Sharks in the playoffs this year.... Well, what else do I need to say?

hehe no kidding... I for one am glad to see him out of the teal.

It was....just.....creepy. He brought that Stars/Belfour funk with him.

In Guerin's defense, it's not his fault he wasn't that great with the Stars.

The defense first system that's been implemented there for what seems like eons now has sucked the offensive life out of everyone for at least the last 5, 6 years.

Dallas is quickly becoming the team that players go to when their careers are about to die, and I hate to say that because I love them as much as I do the Wings.

Guerin in 3 years with the Stars scored about the same as Morrow and Lehtinen, and less than Modano or Arnott. He is easily the worst defensive player of that five-man group. So basically Guerin was the 5th best forward on the Stars over three years. When you consider he was outperformed by Jussi Jokinen in Jokinen's rookie year, that makes him barely a top six forward in Dallas. While other players may have had issues scoring due to the defensive system, Guerin's woes went beyond that, given that he was getting first line time.

He's still worse than Glen Murray.

That's true.

I had forgotten about Guerin getting the ice time he did. I now remember dreading every time he had the puck because you just knew he wouldn't score when he had the chance. My fantasy team suffered that year because of it.

Granted, Guerin had his off-ice problems that weren't his fault due to his father having cancer the last season he played for the Stars. I just expected more of him, I guess, because he was supposed to be one of those five "big-name forwards" the Stars had signed to help lead the team to the Promised Land. Instead, he helped lead the team to yet another first-round exit.

Side note, I would love to see Modano get a shot at a cup while wearing the winged wheel, I have always had a ton of respect for that guy, class act all around.

I'd love to have Modano as well.... But as cool as it would be to see a hometown guy like that get to end his career in Detroit, he's been on the (North) Stars for his whole career, and it just doesn't feel right when a player who is basically the face of his franchise plays his final season or two for someone else. Could you imagine if Stevie had played his final season in Ottawa or something? It would be ridiculous.

I doubt that's the reason they won the cup.

Sidenote: There's a pretty big difference between Guerin and Niedermayer.

Well, I don't see the big deal with it. Guerin has been a leader and an assistant captain on basically every team he's played on (maybe not New Jersey). Anyway, he's a proven leader, played for the US teams, very accomplished player who has done alot and for a time there was one of the premier power forwards in the league for a number of years. The Isles are a mess and IMO, Guerin is probably the most respected player in that locker room so why not give it to him? Simply because he just started there? Would we have said anything if Yzerman went to Ottawa back in the day and the Sens named him Captain? I know, its a dreadful thought but i'm trying to make a point.

IMO, Guerin hasn't had to "win everything" to prove he's a good leader. He has proven to be a leader because he is a solid player, plays with passion, fights the battles and sticks up for his mates and has earned alot of respect over the years. In as much of a mess as the Isles are I don't see how this is such a big deal. Personally, I'd like to see a team name a captain who has been with the team for awhile but I don't see it as being written in stone. If Guerin is the best choice then make him the captain I say.

Guerin has never been a captain of any team. Yzerman had been captain for six years before Ottawa even had a team, and ten years by the time the Yzerman to Ottawa stuff was going on. Niedermayer had been captain as well. The thing is with the Isles, Sillinger and Witt were the existing alternates, and neither had been with the team more than a season. They don't really have a guy who has been around in a leadership role for any extended period now that Yashin is gone.

So ultimately, Guerin might not be a bad choice given their existing roster. I'm sure the original plan included Ryan Smyth as captain, but that didn't happen.

Ray Bourque did just that, though.

Bourque's case was different, he spent all those years in Boston not winning a single cup. Modano at least won a cup. Bourque went to Colorado with cup guarantees written all over.
