55fan 5,133 Report post Posted September 22, 2007 Um, just to put things in perspective, I've never been to a professional sporting event in my life (unless you count chaperoning a bunch of very nice high school kids to a Twins game- and I don't like baseball). The distance I'd have to travel plus the ticket price puts it out of my budget. This year my family got together to get me a ticket to the Wings game when they play the Wild (closest place). It's the Christmas present from the whole family. I don't care where I get to see the Wings, it would be heaven. Even if the place is a dump, my team is there. I get to wear my Wings gear, and I get to cheer without scaring the droppings out of my hamster. A new place is always nice. Memories are important too. But for those of you who have the money and avalibility to see your Wings in action, count your blessings. You're so lucky. And kudos to those of you who take your kids! What a great childhood memory. Not trying to ***** or anything, just putting it in perspective.

Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted September 22, 2007 (edited) Does HD change the economic dynamic for pro teams? I sure think so. No more than the iPod has hurt concert sales. Edited September 22, 2007 by Drake_Marcus

What a great childhood memory. Not trying to ***** or anything, just putting it in perspective. Great perspective. Now for mine... I can appreciate both old and new stadiums alike. I went to college and lived in the Dallas-Fort Worth area from 1999-2004. I didn't go to many Dallas Stars games, but I'd usually go to 1 or 2 a year and saw them play the Wings a few times. I've seen them play both at their current arena, American Airlines, as well as the old Reunion Arena. AA is damned nice, I've also been there for a fair amount of Desperado games (arena football). Surprsingly, I never went to a Mavericks game when I was there. Anyways, you could compare their old place, Reunion Arena, a lot to JLA. Just 1 level of concessions/walking area, and just a basic bowl shape to view the game action. I liked seeing them play in Reunion. It was compact/tight, barely any bad seats. I was on the very top row of the 2nd deck there and it still seemed like I was on top of the action. And Reunion Arena could get very loud, very quickly. I have made trips to seen games at Joe Louis Arena as well the past two seasons. A lot like Reunion Arena. Could JLA use a facelift? Without question. But I am not hard to please at all. Just give me a bathroom to give back to Mother Nature, decent A/C settings in the arena, and I am pleased. I go to a game to see the action on the ice/court/playing surface first, not for an "overall fan experience first". I don't need all the other entertainment stuff. BlakChamber 8 Report post Posted September 22, 2007 Who cares. IN terms of hockey atmosphere, no arena compares. It's the same thing if Maple Leaf Gardens or the Montreal Forum were still open, they'd be dumps compared to today's modern arena's, but in terms of hockey history and atmostphere and nostalgia, its a true hockey fans paradise. I think you've be better off comparing Maple Leaf Gardens and the Forum to Olympia, not The Joe? And when did the atmosphere in The Joe all of a sudden get so great? All people do is ***** around here that the place is too quiet and all the suits sit on their hands.
johnnyoski 0 Report post Posted September 22, 2007 Plan on pissing in those troughs for a few more years since the lease doesn't expire until 2010. Its a dirt cheap deal for Mr. I so he isn't in a hurry to move.

Falcon Stadium (where US Air Force Academy football plays) also has the troughs, or as I like to call them the "rivers of urine," they're pretty gross. DaKineMaui 8 Report post Posted September 22, 2007 and there is always some guy that wants to lean on me because he is too drunk to stand on his own... Totally sorry about that. My bad. ----------------------------------------------------- All in all I'm not one who considers it very important at all to see an NHL hockey game in a 'nice' place. It almost detracts from the experience. Course I also liked going to games alone.....all by myself. I'm weird. I like the crunch of my peanut husks under my feet, the rude staff, annoying away-team fans, the cold walk to and from the arena - the whole deal. I did however catch a game in the Sharks new arena years back. I'll admit - Wow. The usher was pleasant to us? Saw our jerseys (not Sharks) and asked if we'd like to go down by the glass to watch the skate-around. The beers were icy cold and in hard plastic cups (hate icky wax).......the men's rooms were tidy and always at about 20% capacity.....good food.....concourse is wide and easily navigated......only part that sucked was Probie was a healthy scratch for the Hawks (not sure who was more upset - me or him). Guess I wouldn't mind if the Wings moved. But I'm not signing a petition for it either. aloha

Worst troughs though are the ones on recessed into the floor at your feet. Gets worse too the drunker people get. (shudders) Ah the memories...

NC WINGS FAN 5 Report post Posted September 25, 2007 I can't believe all these people bashing the Joe!! Sure it's not that old but there is still a ton of history there. I would love to see them restore the Joe ( make it look like the Olympia) instead of risking making the same mistake the Tigers did when they left to ruins an iconic landmark of a stadium for some 21st century cookie-cutter. Be careful what you wish for.
SanFranWingsFan 0 Report post Posted September 25, 2007 I go to the Shark Tank as much as I can. I see the Wings at the Joe once or twice a year. NO COMPARISON. The Joe is THE PLACE. If you aren't a fan, then, sure, the Shark Tank beats the Joe, hands down. Better food, great beer, even great wine. No wait for the clean bathrooms. BUT if you want to watch hockey, go to the Joe. (I even love the rubber flaps to enter the rink, even if people knock your beer going through.)
Guest Yzer19 Report post Posted September 25, 2007 I'd rather they just stay at the JLA, but upgrade it. I really haven't liked the other new stadiums in Detroit, so I'm guessing I won't like the Red Wings new home either. I hate both Ford Field and Comerica Park. I like the old Fields better.
