Apparently only wants 3M now. It would be a .5M raise over last year.

Does anyone think he would be worth signing at this stage?

According to Milve.

Markov's $3 million asking price still too high to secure NHL employment

Former Detroit Red Wings defenceman Danny Markov has yet to find work with another NHL team as October heads toward the end of its third week, and the team Markov is most-often rumoured to be signing with, the Boston Bruins, isn't willing to meet his asking price:

October 19, Worchester Telegram & Gazette: It's not that they couldn't use him. But don't expect the Bruins to be the team that eventually lands free agent defenseman Danny Markov, who -- according to his agent, Jay Grossman -- is on the verge of signing with some team soon.

The 31-year-old Markov, who played last season with the Detroit Red Wings, is looking for $3 million a year, and that simply isn't within Boston's salary-cap means at the moment. With their 23-man roster and other commitments, the Bruins are at $49.84 million, just shy of the cap limit of $50.3 million.

Signing Markov would necessitate moving multiple players down to Providence or out of the organization completely. And given the Bruins' decent start (3-2 going into last night), no such heavy moving is likely.

Grossman did say that several of the teams he's talking to about Markov "would have to make cap space available somehow." He wouldn't say whether Boston is one of those teams.

Grossman wouldn't say whether the Bruins were interested, but B's GM Peter Chiarelli did:

October 18, Boston Globe: Jay Grossman, agent for free agent Danny Markov, reported that his client remains unsigned. Chiarelli, when asked if he had interest in the veteran Russian defenseman, only said that he has spoken "on and off with Jay the last couple of months."

Me thinks if he wants a paycheck soon - Cosmonaut Markov better come back down to planet Earth, & accept $1 to $1.5 million.

But why would anyone expect hime to take a 1 - 1.5M dollar cut from what he made last year? He was a big part of the Wings defense and a big reason why the team made it to the 3rd round.

Ideally you would pay him 2.5M. What he made last year. But after the year he had, a .5M raise is not unreasonable.

I say sign him. 1 year, 3M.

But who's to say he wants to come back to Detroit.

Lidstrom - Rafalski

Markov - Kronwall

Chelios - Lebda

Lilja

looks like championship D to me.

I'm very torn. While I'd love to see him back there on D for the Wings, I'd like to see them spend that money on a guy like Forsberg, plus a deadline forward. That being said, injury problems last year on D killed us, so maybe it wouldn't be the worst idea.

$2.75 mil. :D

It's mid-October...Nobody wants him - if so he would've been signed by now...If Markov had any sense he'd lower his demands considerably unless he doesn't mind waiting in line with Allison, Lindros, & O'Neill for a welfare check.

Knock that down to $1.75 & ya gotta deal :D

What kind of condition is Danny in? It'll take a month or 2 to get himself up to the fitness level of his teammates. What about guys like Quincey? Yeah - he could spend another year in GR, but with the way he played for us last spring - I'd say he should be our #1 call-up to replace any injured Dman...Just my opinions

EDIT - I too want to see Holland add another top 6 forward, or 2 by the deadline. May not be able to do that if we splurge on Danny.

Plenty of teams want him, just not for asking price he was initially shooting for.

It would be very nide D.

But i'm still afraid about this championship D, if the captain comes back.

Schneider - Niedermayer

Pronger - Beauchemin

O'Donnell - Huskins/DiPenta/Hnidy

i wonder if he might actually sit out an entire year?

because of $$$$ demands.....wow.

Yeah.

Ya gotta wonder how much of that is his agent trying to make his own reputation or something. Dont these guys have any idea how fleeting an NHL career really can be? During mcarty's final season as a Red Wing, who ( other than Holland, anyway) would have thought that he'd only have one more full season in the league?

Take the friggin money and play while ya got the chance!

I do miss Markov's attitude on the ice, thats for sure.

These team needs a 2nd line, not another overpaid defenseman. Use that money to address the teams biggest and most glaring issue: lack of scoring depth.

While I partially agree, I feel the defense needs to be solidified first (not that my feelings mean crap). I really think that the Wings were hoping Lilja could ride a good playoffs into being a top 4 defensive d-man. But, I don't think it will ever work. Right now, the top 3 are working too many minutes to compensate, all while not having a true defensive defenseman amongst them.
