Whatever happened to The FInal Countdown and Rock & Roll pt 2 being played at hockey games???

uh..... the countdown ran out, eh?

As for the Garry Glitter song (RRP2) that's a different story. Gary Glitter was convicted of child molestation, and many arenas removed that song as their goal song. This happened to the Sharks, and they went through a voting process that eventually got Green Day's "Holiday" as our goal song. Ugh...just what I want to hear... manufactured pop-punk made for 1`2 year old girls at a hockey game. However.... this year they put the Glitter song back in after the fans comlained so much about it. No offense to those that use the internet, but using the chatroom and the website in SJ as a reflection of the crowd was a mistake, and apparently the minority.

There were actually t-shirts made that said "HEY! We want our goal song back".

If you used to hear this song at the Joe and don't anymore, this is most likely why.

this is cut and pasted from a Sharks site:

“The Hey Song”

Rhythmically challenged fans will be pleased to learn that the old goal song – “Rock and Roll, Part 2,” nicknamed “The Hey Song” – is back by popular demand. (Last season’s song, “Holiday” by Green Day, has a good beat that you can really dance to, but it took all season for fans to figure out on which beat to pump their fists in the air to celebrate a goal. Some fans never quite caught on and simply stood there and clapped.) Major league and college sports teams dumped “The Hey Song” in 2006 when the man who first made it famous, Gary Glitter, was convicted of child molestation charges in Vietnam. It’s worth noting that the version played at the Tank is an organ version of the song and not the original, and that Glitter receives no royalties when the song is played. So hey – your demands were heard and heeded.

Yeah I know all about the gary glitter molestation deal.

Idk, it's just music. It's the same principle with Michael Jackson. Regardless of whatever he did with those kids, his music is still great. I think an artists music and personal life should never be linked together too strongly.

Stompin Tom!

'Hello out there we're on the air it's hockey night tonite

Tension grows the whistle blows-& the puck goes down the ice.

The goalie jumps and the players bump and the fans all go insane

Someone roars "Bobby scores!" at the good ole hockey game

Chorus:

Oh the good ole hockey game is the best game you can name

And the best game you can name is the good ole hockey game

2nd period:

Where players dash with skates aflash the home team trails behind

But they grab the puck and go bursting up and they're down across the line

They storm the crease like bumble bees they travel like a burning flame

We see them slide the puck inside -It's a "1-1" hockey game!

Chorus:

3rd period: last game in the playoffs, too...

Oh take me where the hockey players face off down the rink-

And the Stanley Cup is all filled up for the chaps who win the drink-

Now the final flick of the hockey stick and a one gigantic scream-

The puck is in! The home team wins! The good ole hockey game!'

I still think the best "hockey songs" in no particular order are

-Rock and Roll (pt 2) by Gary Glitter

-Kiss Him (Goodbye) by Steam

-The Hockey Song by Warren Zevon

-Heavy by Collective Soul (I think it was used in an EA NHL game...2001?)

-for some reason the BGSU ice arena always plays Ants Marching by DMB

-The Launch by DJ Jean

yeah just look a Brittany Spears... oh wait her music is awful too.

The "Good Old Hockey Game" song was redone by the Corb Lund Band.... some kind of pop/funk remix it really sucks!!!

I also enjoy "Me Like Hockey" by the Arrogant Worms its really funny!

hockey night in canada theme song

and we cant forget the song we will be hearing later on this year by a band named Queen, no need to say the title.

In the '70's, wasn't Emerson Lake and Palmer's "Hoe Down" the theme song for Hockey Night in Canada?

And any of you guys know Buddy Wasisname and The Other Fellas playing "Shinny on the Ice". Great unplugged classic.

100% Pure

SHINNY ON THE ICE

Wait until the bay is froze, scrape and shovel off the snow

Well the scattered boy had skates, scattered toque on from his face

Wearing rubbers with no grips, pipes and planks for hockey sticks

Well I know it wasn't nice playing hockey on the ice

After school and Sunday too made no difference who was who

We had Rolly for the goalie, 'cause he was six foot two

Watch for Ralphie on his skates, couldn't turn he'd just go straight

If he struck he'd take your life, playing hockey on the ice.

Oh when Harv or Bruce or Len, shifted the net and fired one in

Rolly beat him in the face but they was all the best of friends

If you had to use your fists, you kept on your woolly mitts

And they sure got lot of fights playing shinny on the ice.

Chorus:

Scunnin' marbles in the muck, playing tiddley after school

Catching conners off the wharf, firing rocks like bloody fools

Copying pans out in the cove, killing frogs or rats or mice

But there wasn't nothing better than playing hockey on the ice.

We had Bert the referee 'cause he saw one on TV

He made up all the rules, but no one gave it heed

And the worse one of the bunch, Tom would go home for his lunch

He'd do it just for spite, playing hockey on the ice

Brucie's mother tanned his hide for wearing Sunday clothes outside

For falling in the rent or going off the edge of the ice

For swearing there was Harv, swinging fists right from the start

He was all bark no bite playing hockey on the ice.

Oh, when the day would end and the cold and wet would send

Every boy home to work, after supper then

We were soon all off to beds, the only thing in our heads

What we dreamt of every night was playing hockey on the ice.

Chorus:

Scunnin' marbles in the muck, playing tiddley after school

Catching conners off the wharf, firing rocks like bloody fools

Copying pans out in the cove, killing frogs or rats or mice

But there wasn't nothing better than playing hockey on the ice.

Playing hockey (hockey, hockey) on the bays or ponds or coves

Playing hockey (hockey, hockey) as everybody knows.

"my like sergi federov,...me like him better with head cut off,..."

Are you serious?! There's a song that actually says that?!1 :yowza:

I personaly liked when there'd be some shoving going on(not really a fight) they'd play "Headstrong". I love that song and it really fits with hockey.

Has anyone ever changed a real song to make it about Wings/hockey, or am I the only one?

Um, yeah, that'd be me. It takes a certain kind of insanity. I wrote quite a few, but lost all but this one, which I posted here last summer. Hope you like it.

The midi in the link isn't the best, but it works. It's to the tune of American Pie by Don McClean.

A long, long year ago

Do we all remember how

The Captain used to make us smile?

But he retired and we were low,

Then Shanny also chose to go-

We didn’t think we’d win for quite a while.

We watched with barely hopeful shiver

But Hank and Dats- they did deliver.

Homer played the doorstop

While Hasek made one more stop.

And even though we had a cry

When old 19 was raised up high,

We knew they’d spread their wings and fly.

The Wings will never die.

Oh, my, my look at Zetterberg fly

Looks like Heaven, motor revving’, what a wonderful guy.

Put him with Dats, and our limit’s the sky

Cuz those Red Wing boys will never say die.

Red Wing boys will never say die.

You look at them- what’s not to love?

Drapes, Malts and Clears- they sure can shove

If a team needs laying low.

Dominator still can flop and roll

And Ozzie gives the team some soul

Just knowing he could jump right in and go.

And Nick Lidstrom, we’re in love with him,

With a Norris win for every limb.

At home we couldn’t lose-

All the central sang the blues.

We were impressed then with our Finnish buck,

And Franzen stood like a big Mack truck.

Kronwall’s face was pure bad luck.

The Wings will never die.

We started singing

My, my, look at lil Hudler fly

He’s just zippin’ and a-rippin, but we’re wondering why

His ice time’s low, cuz he’s a wonderful guy.

Oh, those Red Wing boys will never say die.

Red Wing boys will never say die.

Now some fans start to whine and moan

“Been five years since we’d a cup our ownâ€Â.

But the rest smiled and said “Wait and see.â€Â

They all said that Calgary was mean

And our boys were all too small and lean,

But we fought and won the victory.

We won the two in old Motown,

But in Calgary things slowed right down

Our hopes were slightly burned.

To Motown we returned.

But then our boys regained their spark,

We left the Flames burnt out all dark

And set our sights to hunt for Shark

The Wings will never die.

We were singing

My, my, see McClennan’s stick fly

Sent our Franzen bent and dancin’ but he gave his reply.

He scored the big goal just by shooting it high

Cuz those Red Wing boys will never say die.

Red Wing boys will never say die.

Lost Lil’ Nik, but got back Zetter.

Lang and Sammy looked much better.

The playoffs seemed to sail right past.

Holmstrom had to take a pass

But came back attired in plexiglass

With him back, the Wings came back up really fast.

Then the defencemen were full of gloom

When Schneid’s wrist broke, it filled the room

With many’a downward glance.

But Quincey gave us a chance.

It was another round for the Winged Wheel,

The fans and boys just had to feel

A Stanley victory was real.

The Wings will never die.

We started singing

My, my, look at Mike Babcock’s tie

Superstition, hopeful wishin’, let’s just give it a try.

The Sharks are gone, just a Duck left to fry.

Cuz those Red Wing boys will never say die.

Red Wing boys will never say die.

Oh, and when the Ducks came to our place

We wiped the smile off Pronger’s face.

The toll showed on those who defend.

Although Quincy’s nimble, Lebda’s quick

Cheli, Lilja, Dan and Nick-

They gave their all, but had to see it end.

Homer downed, and we did rage

As Pronger’s elbow did engage.

We watched as Homer fell,

After that was never well.

We lost three times after that night.

The Stanley Cup was out of sight.

We saw Pronger laughing with delight.

But Wings will never die.

We started singing

My, my, what a terrible guy.

He’s a-winnin’ and a-grinnin’- hope he’s hung out to dry.

Where’s D Mac and Probie? They’d’ve blackened his eye.

As we watched our Stanley Cup dreams all fly.

But Red Wing boys will never say die.

And though we know it hurts to lose

Maybe next year will bring happy news.

We signed Rafalski right away.

I have to wonder what’s in store,

Since the team’s not what it was before,

But really, things have never been that way.

In the Joe, the fans will scream

The Wings will always chase that dream.

Tradition is unbroken,

Though different names are spoken.

Two or three years at the most,

Lord Stanley’s Cup we’re sure to host.

And it will be our turn to boast.

The Wings will never die.

And we’ll be singing

My, my, look at Chelios fly.

He’s still Heaven at forty-seven. What a wonderful guy.

Sobotka still chases boiled octopi

Cuz the Red Wing boys will never say die.
