Trade Deadline Options

You need to stick to NHL07 or whatever it is. We don't have the cap space for Alex O and we still have to give Z a bucket of money this summer. Let's see, who would Washington want in a trade for Alex? Z? Datsuk? Lids.

It really IS out of the question

That's where you're wrong. I'm not talking about the Wings signing him, just a rental for this seasons playoff run. Alex is still playing out the last year of his 1st NHL contract. He is only making $984,200 this season. If the Caps can't get him signed in the next 120 days (or so) before the trade-deadline, they will be forced to trade him to a playoff team as a rental or risk losing him for nothing in the summers as a free agent. So yes, Ovechkin will get a big pay raise when he signs his next contract. But if that does not happen before the trade-deadline then he would be a cheap rental for a playoff team. Yes it may cost us Flip. But it would be so worth it to make a play off run with an Ovechkin, Zetterberg, Datsyuk line.

And we've all seen how difficult contact negotiations with star Russian players can be. There is a good chance the Caps don't get the his contract done in time.

So as a rental, it is NOT out of the question.

you are out of your mind. he is a RFA, not a UFA. worst case scenario is that he signs an offer sheet with another team and the caps match it. the caps are not at risk of losing him unless they don't match an offer sheet, which they will probably do even at the max.

this isn't penner or some scrub like that. the caps will likely match any offer sheet. end of discussion.

stop wasting your time.

I would think you would know a little bit more about Ovechkin considering your screen name, but anyway.

Just you can be clear on a couple things:

- His base salary is $984k, but his cap hit is $3.8 million+ (though much less if traded at the deadline)

- Unless the Caps were to get a fantastic return for him in a trade (which they wouldn't), he WILL NOT BE TRADED

THIS YEAR! They are not risking losing him for nothing, he will be a RFA this summer if he's not signed before

July 1st. If a team signs him to an offer sheet, then the Caps can match, or they can accept the compensation they

would receive, which would be something like 5 first round draft picks.
