Jeff Gordon is the greatest race car driver ever

I know there are some Nascar fans on this board...here's why Gordon is the best

Here are the classic points standings (Pre-Chase) for the 2007 Nascar Nextel Cup Season. Jeff Gordon wins the championship.

Well, if the chase system had never been created, Gordon would have won the cup in 2004 instead of Busch. Well, he would have won it again this year too.

Classic standings

1) #24-Jeff Gordon 5455

2) #48-Jimmie Johnson 5102, -353

3) #20-Tony Stewart 4749

4) #17-Matt Kenseth 4718

5) #11-Denny Hamlin 4623

6) #5-Kyle Busch 4585

7) #99-Carl Edwards 4574

8) #07-Clint Bowyer 4556

9) #31-Jeff Burton 4549

10) #2-Kurt Busch 4371

11) #29-Kevin Harvick 4344

12) #1-Martin Truex Jr. 4314

13) #12-Ryan Newman 4046

14) #16-Greg Biffle 3991

15) #25-Casey Mears 3949

16) #8-Dale Earnhardt Jr. 3929

Jeff Gordon = 6 time Nascar Cup Champion in my book

And let's be fair. Gordon would have 6 cups given the chase never happened. Ok, let's take Dale Earnhardt. After 4 cup championships, let's implement the chase system. Would he have fewer titles? Would he have more?

In my opinion, Jeff Gordon is the greatest NASCAR driver to ever get into a race car. If he had the same opportunities as Earnhardt and Petty did (no chase system, easier competition), he'd be as good as them statistically wise. He's passed Earnhardt in total wins, and he'll certainly get half of what Petty did, and keep in mind, Petty did it with much lower competition. Earnhardt and Petty never had the system changed, and they were able to get 7 championships. If Gordon had the same deal, he'd have 6.

If you want to compare Earnhardt, Petty, and Gordon, you have to factor in the level of competition they raced in. Clearly, Gordon has raced in the most competitive era. You also have to factor in how much more it takes to win a championship than it did 20 years ago when Earnhardt was winning his titles. The fact that Gordon would have 6 championships in a more competitive era with the old points system says a lot about how great of a driver he actually is. And his attitude is not a part of anything. People say Gordon whines and complains, well anyone can whine and complain, and it certainly doesn't take away from his driving skill.

Jeff Gordon = Best Ever

And I'm an Earnhardt fan

Arguing over the greatest NASCAR driver ever reminds me of another excellent question.

Who is the greatest AHL player ever?

The thread title does not say 'NASCAR' does it? I was simply making a statement aboutthe validity of the claim that saying Gordon was the greatest NASCAR driver ever is a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT thing from being able to claim he is the greatest race car driver. Thusly, my point that 'greatest NASCAR driver' and 'greatest race car driver' are not the same title, is NOT a thread derail.

To further expand on my previous point, here is Jeff Gordon's AHL counterpart:

Fred Glover, the greatest AHLer ever

It's called an analogy. But since you have decided to be dense today, let me spell it out:

'Jeff Gordon is the greatest NASCAR driver ever, and this means he's the greatest race car driver ever.'

'Jeff Gordon may be great at NASCAR, but Fred Glover was great in the AHL. Being the greatest to participate in your level of your sport doesn't make you better than those who excelled in a higher level of your sport.'

The topic was about motorsports, not hockey. To be specific, this thread was designed around jeff gordon and a member's opinion that he is the best rac car driver ever.

NO ONE MENTIONED AHL OR FRED GLOVER EVER!!

All i posted was a reminder to you that derailing the thread is against the forum guidelines.

Here is another forum guideline

· DO post constructively. If you can't add anything meaningful to a discussion, don't bother.

back to the topic:

What about Michael Schumaker? I am surprised the F1 fans in this site haven't posted yet.

If Jeff Gordon is the greatest race car driver ever, then why did he build a sizable lead over MAH BOY JIMMIE JOHNSON and then CHOKE IT OFF LIKE A CAT COUGHING UP A HAIRBALL!

Don't forget THE 7-TIME FORMULA 1 CHAMP FROM GERMANY MICHAEL SCHUMACHER

Jeremy88, He Whined before the Chase started. It really started big after Evernham left. If he were "THE GREATEST" as you put it, he'd have won 4 races in a row and won the championship, not finish an average of 5th place and end up in second.

Different era's . different driving styles . true Fangio is one of the all time greats and in some peoples opinion he is the greatest . some may also say Schumi , Jochen Rinhdt , Niki Lauda , Jim Clark or Alain Prost . but for sheer dedication , commitement and out and out raw speed . it's Senna as the greatest for me.

In seven full seasons racing F1, Fangio won five world championships. Senna won three in ten. Prost won four during Senna's career.

I don't know about ever, but it's true the Chase screwed him out of a couple more championships. He's on the list along with Petty, Earnhardt Sr, and others, but for total domination of a sport it's gotta be Schumacher. He set so many F1 records I don't think anybody will ever be able to touch his legacy.

listen to what i'm saying .....for once do that ok . DIFFERENT ERA'S . okay! Ayrton Senna drove in an era against proffesional athlete's . Fangio drove in a different era. Senna died when he was 34 , at time's like this stat's mean s*** . look at the man , look at the raw speed and natural ability . look at who they were competing against and what cars they drove.

IMO, the chase doesn't determine a champion. Nascar doesn't need a playoff style to determine the champion. A true champion is consistent for 36 races, a chase champion only needs to be consistent for 10 races.

You're an *******. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean it sucks. Learn to be more ******* tolerable. Seriously, nothing pisses me off more than people who are close minded. So what if you don't enjoy it. Don't bash it. Other people like it. It's called respect. Grow the f*** up.

He was bashing the driving in a circle 250 times, not what people actually watch NASCAR for...which is crashing and so they can drink cheap nasty beer.

I gotta agree with Redwingsfever here. If I ever have trouble getting to sleep. All I would need is a little nascar to knock me right out. lol
