Do we actually have it all?

Big gritty winger or a scoring winger are the up front needs. A physical depth defenceman with good size is the need at the back end.

Once we get them, we'll win the cup easy.

Pretty much what I was going to write. However, it still won't be easy to win the cup, because it never is.

Ya, winning the cup is tough no matter who you got in there. I really thought last year was the year after we snuck by San Jose, however that awful goal that bounced off Nick's stick was the end of us. I don't think we need much though....maybe one more forward.

My opinion is not to change a damn thing with this team. Here's why:

- The ZDH line is ridiculously good.

- Filppula will materialize as a second-line center, and Happy, Sammy, and Cleary are all capable of fortifying the second line.

- This team can roll 4 lines, and the guys they have for reserves aren't too shabby.

- The team fortified their grit with toughness through the acquisitions of Downey and Drake. The recent willingness to fight by the Pain Train only helps the cause.

- The defense corps is the best in the league (I think Phoenix's is better on paper... on paper.)

- When your goaltending tandem consists of Chris Osgood and Dominik Hasek on their "A" games, you're in wonderful shape (I don't think the team should have either as the definite starter and should just have them share playing time even going into the playoffs.)

- Biggest reason for the Red Wings success? Two words: Mike Babcock

- Name me a better front office in the league and I'll get ya some Cobo Joes. You can't? Well, there you go.

The hockey fans in Phoenix would kill to have a team that was 22-6-2 and as great as the Wings are.

We can't ***** about goaltending anymore, we can't ***** about a lack of toughness any longer, we can't ***** about a lack of offense or a lack of defense, and we certainly can't ***** about the coaching or the management of the team. This team goes to work harder than the Pistons and is a team that's truly definitive of HockeyTown. Detroiters should be proud that the Wings are their team and have a commitment to excellence and winning.

GO WINGS!

We are missing a Russian named Fedorov...

No Sergei ... No Cup

Sucks but so true as long as he is still in the league

I move to have all Fedorov is the only way we can win the Cup comments to be stricken from the public record, permanently.

Pop Quiz

What is 38 years old and has become a 1/2 points per game player and hasn't been a + player since 2002?

Currently there are 7 Red Wings players with more goals and only one player with a worse +/- than our Mystery Man.

Still don't know? He's currently ranked/tied/listed as the #58 most productive center in the league.

The last time I looked the Wings didn't need another perimeter center who was better on defense than he is on offense.

Gratton would be a good fit. And wouldnt cost us an arm and a leg to get. puts up points and has a physical pressnce also.. and he makes 1.5m a year.. so relativly cheap also. gives us enough cap move to pick up a physical depth d-man

Denis Gauthier...BrooksOprik, Bran Mezei..Alexei Semenov...Brendan Witt.. would be solid options, all play a physical style of hockey. Might not be the prototypical puck possesion d-man, but playing against teams like Calgary,San Jose,Anaheim,Columbus we will need a physical pressence other then downey.

Hell.. Talk to Tyson Nash see if he wants to help downey out with the enforcer roll

Yeah but look what teams he is or was playing on in that time. Everyone knows when you come to Detroit you get your game back... :D

I 100% agree after he retires ... until that point and he is playing and not on the wings... My statement of "no Sergei, No Cup" has yet to be proven FALSE :sly:

Ergo in the modern day Red Wings History... it would be deemed a TRUE statement

Oh dear lord, what DOESN'T this team need?!!! I mean let's face it, there's been what... 30 games already this season? And DET has won ONLY 22 of them!!! My god, this team sucks! If we don't get help soon, it'll be the end of hockeytown as we know it! Next thing you know, we won't even be able to sell out the JLA!!!

Ok, on a more serious note: Teams can always get better, no matter how damned good they may be. I don't really think we need anything, but I'd like to get an addition that meets one of these needs:

1) Second line scoring. I don't trust our second line to be consistent as it is, plus a little extra depth would be helpful.

2) Another good toughguy... fighter, punishing open ice hitter, etc. We've proven we're tough enough to stand up to whatever other teams might dish out, but it'd be nice to have someone that puts fear into those teams as well.

The good thing, with our cap room, we might be able to grab someone who fits one of those traits. I'd like to get someone who meets both... but who's available there could do that? :)

You mean Lilja and Kopecky don't put fear into people after the way they've manhandled Phaneuf, Begin, and Sharp this year?

Sigh. You're all so spoiled. I'm glad I was young for the cup runs, I think this team is excellent.

If you trade for Gratton, Rolston, whatever... you open up another hole. Grittzkey, who would you trade to acquire Gratton?

I actually think Fedorov might work out. I mean he is very responsible defensibly so he will fit right into our system without long adjusting period. (babcock would love him) Also he has ability to elevate his game when the game gets bigger. He still has nice wheels and can man the blue line if neccessary during powerplay with his wicked slapshot. Finally he knows some ppl in our locker room so he will feel at ease and his time in Detroit was his glory years so maybe we will get more out of him than Columbus.

His monster contract ends after this season so it won't hold us down in future. However, will Columbus let him go if they make playoff or even if they don't? and for how much? That is a totally different matter.

Any kind of depth that we can get for cheap would be great. It's extremely doubtful we'll get a real impact player like we're all hoping for. But do we really need one? Really? With the style of hockey we play, and the players that we do have, and the way it's going right now, trading away youth seems like a waste...Unless of course it is for an impact player ;)...
