Never. You don't trade away a Steve Yzerman no matter what.

one reason being that you never know what could happen. He could have gone out there and scored 25 points in the playoffs and we could have won another cup.

another reason, well he is Steve Yzerman. How do you trade away the face of your team after everything he did. YOu let that man retire as a Red Wing.

okaaaay.... hmmm. just a weird question to ask. i'm thinking no . no respectable team trades away their leader . the one who others look up to and admire . if they had done something like this it could have hurt the Wings bad . the players , the fans and the press would have lost all respect for the management .

He had allready won 3 cups so no way i'd trade him ... its a respect thing on top of that i'd doubt he would leave he would of rather stayed here sink with the team then go to another team to just win the cup for 2 months

Heck yes, you trade him for the dallas cowboy cheerleaders. I mean after all it is a fantasy land you're living in right? How's about Stevie and Cheli for the DCC and a new car! Oh how the trades are endless in Fantasy Land. Is Tatoo still a live? Say hi to mr roke for me.

I think the first problem is that you are seeing Stevie as gone now, and are thinking that maybe we could have gotten somebody who would still be around. But that's a problematic way of thinking. Stevie isn't gone, he only retired from playing, he is still a huge part of the organization. Just because we don't see his affect on the ice, believe me it is there. Not only that, if we had traded him then his jersey wouldn't be in the rafters for all current and future players to look at and gain inspiration from. Crosby's will come and go throughout the league (and who knows maybe we'll even get a few, like a Zetterberg, or a Datsyuk, or a Hudler, or a Filpula, or a Cleary, or a.....), but Yzerman's are very few and far between. We would have never been able to get a trade for him that would adequately replace what he is still doing for this team, even if we got Crosby and four 1st round draft picks it wouldn't be enough. That's just my view though.

Another angle to look at it from, and not so long winded, is that doing something like that would just be dirty pool to both Yzerman and whoever you traded him to. What a way to say thanks to the greatest thing to happen to hockey.

Besides, I really don't think that Chelios would have approved.

So if we had traded Yzerman in his last year, we wouldn't have retired his jersey? Ok then... <_<

...and you were GM Ken Holland, would you have tried to trade him at the deadline? keep in mind no other gm or any other person for the matter knows it would have been his last season.

Did you forget your old password or just straight lose your mind?

So if we had traded Yzerman in his last year, we wouldn't have retired his jersey? Ok then...

So... you're saying that if you had given your entire career to one team, bled for them, injured yourself for them, and then were only one season away from getting to retire as the longest running Captain for one team and having only played for one team, only to be suddenly traded and had to uproot your family; all because you were going to retire and were viewed as nothing more than a trading chip for someone younger that would stick around longer, you would come back to that city to have them tell you how much they love you and want to retire you as their hero? I wouldn't.

Besides, he wouldn't be retired as the Captain would he? If he was traded before retiring, that would make him no longer the Captain of the Wings wouldn't it?

"Ok then..."
