Igor Larionov

I'm dumb...

Not only would it be cool with these 4 getting inducted together - they're all good candidates. I don't really know why I missed on Larionov. Good regular season and play-off totals + 3 Cups. But the thing that puts him over the top is the fact that he had 2 Olympic Golds and an impressive career in Russia before even making the trip across the pond.

Not really sure if that applies tho - is the HHOF mainly NHL oriented or does it also take international play into account?

So am I, but I still think Leetch will be picked over Larionov because of the whole '94 Stanley Cup bias.

Wouldn't be very surprising, really. Oh, as an added extra, was checking some of Larionov's stats; apparently the guy played Sweden 38 times as a member of USSR national squad - they won 33 of them and only lost 3... Damned impressive...

Actually, Larionov's pre-NHL career is what gives him a shot at the HHOF. If you are looking at his NHL career alone, he'd have no shot at all.

That only adds up to 36.....

My list...

Yzerman

Leetch

Hull

Robitaille

Honorable mention

Larionov

Andreychuk

Bondra

Ties.

Anyway, Yzerman, Robitaille, and Hull are absolute guarantees. Probably Leetch over Larionov because Leetch is a North American, but Larionov will be in eventually, no doubt.

So thus the process will begin of inducting the 2001-02 Detroit Red Wings into the Hall of Fame.

Yzerman

Robitaille

Leetch

Hull

Larionov and Andreychuk will have to wait another year - but herein lies the problem

If you actually look at the eligable players the next 4-5 years (and include probable retirees as well), the classes are stacked almost every year, especially now the first wave of European players have retired and are coming up for eligability.

I think with the expanded NHL, 4 players may not be enough per year. IMO it could do with expanding to 5 (that doesn't mean you HAVE to elect 5, just a max of 5).

IIRC Larionov was eligable this year but stood no chance against Messier/Francis/McInnis/Stevens and the fact is that he will struggle to get in, because despite being called the HOCKEY hall of fame, it remains the NHL hall of fame.

Yzerman

Leech

Andreychuk

Larionov (I don't see him on the website but he deserves to be in HHOF right after Yzerman, if not before)

then: Hull, Robitaille. I don't see the rest of the pack making it soon, though. maybe Bondra

but I'm not so sold on him being the same class as above four

Doesn't hurt that he is 7th all-time in scoring amongst defensemen, has 2 norris trophies, a conn symthe and a calder.

To be honest, I think Bondra may have a hard time getting in ever. The only thing he has going for him as an argument is 500 goals. He has less than 900 pts, less than a point per game and has never won anything.

Also that assuming that nobody else from previous generations gets a case made for them or any players that weren't in the NHL that belongs there as well.

The website listed the first time eligibles for the next induction. Larionov's first chance was this past one.

actually, he has. a World Champion title with Slovakian team which is by far

not the most powerful national team in the world. which would be my case

for him - a role he played for Slovakian hockey in general.

but I agree he's a very long shot and doesn't go along other names.

I mean.... him and Yzerman or Andreychuk... not the same league

The failure of the article is that it didn't take into account eligible players not yet in the Hall when proclaiming Leetch as a first ballot HOFer.

Guys like Mike Vernon, Andy Moog, Tom Barrasso, Lorne Chabot, Bernie Nicholls, Igor Larionov, Glenn Anderson, Mark Howe, Roger Crozier, Ron Hextall, John Tonelli, Doug Gilmour, Sergei Makarov all are deserving also...
