Filppula

we all have to remember this is his 2nd season, he is not gonna out smart other teams defense everytime.

However when he plays with intensity and in higher pace, we can cleary see hes got a special package inside him.

This team is just coastin right now, and Filp doesn't have enough experience or leadership to take it to another level at times like this. That is my take

Filppula is one of my favorite players. He's got good instincts and moves, but like people have said, he's still young and working on his confidence.

I got out my boyfriend's DVD set last night and watched game 3 of the 2002 Cup finals -- Datsyuk's rookie season and I remember thinking how similar he looks to Filppula. All the pieces were there, but he wasn't quite together yet. He had beautiful moments, but he was still a young player gaining experience on lower lines.

I know Filppula isn't the answer to the Wings' current offensive troubles, but in a couple years, he'll be in full bloom.

Oh hay is this the thread where we respond to a two sentence OP.

I'm seriously laughing at how pissed off everyone is over this mini losing streak. Yeah, it sucks. It sucks hard. But did we really expect we'd go the whole season without a bad losing streak?

But, oh, no... my bad. BAG SKATE BAG SKATE LOCKER ROOM SPEECH TRADE X TRADE Y AQUIRE X AQUIRE Y HASEK SUCKS OSGOOD SUCKS PASS SHOOT LESS EUROS MORE EUROS

did I cover it?

I think I am going to sig that post!! That was great.

Flip, just like Dats in his first and second seasons (and even after that) is always looking to pass first, shoot second. Yes he doesn't shoot enough, yes he occasionally blows a good scoring chance in favour of passing the puck, but that's how he was brought up and how he developed. Babcock is always telling him to shoot more and over the months he will, just relax. I can't stand threads where everyone wants everyone traded just because we're in a slump.

Btw, Flip was one of our best players last night.

Nope. If Filpula was traded for someone of equal value or a star (Sundin, Hossa, etc.) and we won a cup, but Filpula goes on to have a nice career, I could honestly care less. Same with Flischeman, Mattias, etc.

He NEEDS to shoot more, case closed. If he doesnt, then I wouldnt keep him.

Is this an overreaction or what! Without looking at the stats I'd say his 15 goals for the season are 5th on the team, not bad for a guy who needs to shoot more. Of course he does, but saying you wouldn't keep him just because he doesn't take as many shots as you like is ridiculous.

Sammy is 3rd (or 4th) on this team for SOG, and yet he ranks 9th for goals. Enough said really.

He's in his second full season!!!! He's young and a little inexperienced. He's not completely used to the longer NHL schedule yet. I expected him to drop off a little about this time in the season. Hudler as well. Once he gets his second wind ad confidence back none of this will be an issue. It's funny how fast people forget how spectacular this guy can be. Why trade that away for a rental or someone older.

The difference is Filpula is on our second line, and datsyuk was on our 4th then. Datsyuk wasn't relied on to score with the load of talent we had. This is why we need to make a deal for a forward at the deadline, like hossa or something, who isn't inexperienced.

Filppula is my favorite player on the team. I don't know what led me to choose him, but I think it was because I saw something in him...and he was kinda cute.

He was doing really hot at the end of the year, but lately (approx. the last twenty games), he has been backing out because of his lack of confidence. What I want to know is where it went and when it's coming back.

Why I can't say I like him because of how he looks, but Flip is my favorite not all star player on the wings. So he hasn't been doing all that great lately. Get over it. He'll get back into the groove.

I like Fillppula. He reminds me a bit of Datsyuk when he first started playing for the wings. He has a great view for the ice and plays with a lot of confidence. I agree that he needs to shoot more, but so did Datsyuk until last year.

Personally I would keep him around a couple more years; I think he has yet to break out.

Its always the same old same old.

When the Russian 5 didn't score, everyone would complain how Larionov wouldn't shoot the puck.

Certainly with all the talent we have when the puck doesn't go into the net there always is a scapegoat.

Just don't make it the paperboy. Filpula will come around.

For the first 58 games...

Samuelsson 0.2008 (i.e. .2008 shots per minute of ice time)

Hank 0.1999

Cleary 0.1606

Dats 0.1559

Franzen 0.1228

Homer 0.1135

Hudler 0.1130

Kopecky 0.1021

Nick 0.0948

Rafalski 0.0911

Ellis 0.0889

Draper 0.0879

Filppula 0.0877

Lebda 0.0871

Kronwall 0.0718

Maltby 0.0584

Chelios 0.0502

Lilja 0.0474

Drake 0.0468

Downey 0.0310

Meech 0.0247

Hartigan 0.0085

Filppula has shot less often than Draper (!) and Kopecky, and less than 2 D men.

Having said that, I really like Filp, I think he'll be a dandy.

You guys do remember that this is only his second year in the league, right?

While he is not a rookie, he definitely isn't a veteran. There will be growing pains with young players. The will make bigger mistakes than veterans, they will have bigger slumps. All of these things happen to most second year players. He should get better over time.

This is the hardest part about being a wings fan, we get so used to the wings winning that when they do slump people freak out. Also everyone (on here not all wings fans) have no patience for players, either perform now or they are trade bait and need to be trade.

Is he struggling as of late, obviously, but 3 weeks ago people on here were labeling him untouchable. Now he is disposable.

I said it before he and Huds are keepers unless you have a chance to land Hossa or a player of that caliber and who Det knows they can lock up long term.

The kids will be fine, and as others noted, Dats and Z weren't exactly superstars when they were in their second year, and Dats really didn't start shooting until this season.

-For the poster who said Huds and Flip are no Dats and Z.

Well of course not, but I do remember people saying Dats and Z were no Stevie and Shanny. While both are true that does not mean they are not going to be important/impact players on this team. This team doesn't need another D and Z. What they need is a consistent second line. If Flip and Huds develop and become consistent players it will be no big deal that they aren't D and Z, just like it is no biggie that D and Z are not Stevie and Shanny!
