Sure you'll take a D man that plays 30 minutes a night over a forward that plays 20.

But come on, any forward would love to play 30 minutes a night. But teams tend to have four forward lines, and three sets of D (typically). Some teams have a extra D or extra forward that goes out every so often.

Could a forward play 30 minutes a game? Sure, most of them are in great shape, some better than others. Playing forward you skate a lot more than D. But a guy like Ovechkin, Crosby, Kovalchuk, etc, these guys have the endurance to skate 30 minutes a game. You just can't really give forwards 30 minutes of ice, because you're going to have one line that will hardly get out there.

The fact of the matter is defensemen play thirty minutes a night. Forwards don't. It doesn't matter if they could play thirty minutes a night; they don't.

Lidstrom is as good defensively as Crosby is offensively. Lidstrom's offense blows Crosby's defense out of the water.

Dont get me wrong, I really admire how Malkin has stepped up, however saying he has outperformed Crosby this year... um, yeah, because Sid is hurt. Crosby was ahead of all until he got hurt. Hell, he has been out for 20+ games and he is still in top 20ish in scoring I think.

If I was making a cup run and I could add one player to my roster. Nick Lidstrom would get the nod, regardless of my loyalty to the wings. But if I was starting a franchise in 2009. And I could pick a player to cornerstone in, even with AO's scoring and charisma, I think I'd give the nod to Crosby.

Wow. Pretty much the smartest thing I've read on this forum since I found this site... sums it all up perfectly.

And no, this is not a Crosby vs. Ovechkin thread... its a Crosby vs everyone else thread. Completely different.

Crosby isnt the best player in the world, hes not the best play maker, Id give that to thorton (I hate the guy, but i cant deny it), hes not the best goal scorer, you have AO and Kovalchuk who are much better, hes a s***ty defensive forward, now he is much better then average in the first 2, but, hes not #99 or 19, and personally if I had to pick a forward to start a team around it would either be Zetterberg or Thorton.

it seems everyone keeps saying that the only reason people talk about Ovechkin and Malkin now is that because Crosby got hurt. However, to assume that Crosby would have continued to be good is also like saying if zetterburg played every game this year and didn't have back problems he would have had more than 75 points. There are a lof of ifs. Or saying well if Cleary wouldn't have gotten hurt he would have scored over 40 goals. You never know. I think to crown Crosby the best in the world is a little premature...

For Ovechkin and Malking to get more respect, they would not only have to drag their teams into playoffs they would also have to marry Canadians girls and get a Canadian citizenship, denounce Russia and get rid of their Russian accents:)

With others tearing it up while he's injured, it's unfair to say he's the best. I will say this though, I'm a guy who watched alot of hockey, I focus in on certain players. When Washington plays, I focus closely on Ovechkin. When Atlanta plays, I focus on Kovalchuk, when Tampa plays, I focus in on Lecavalier. With all that said, the skillset that Crosby has is REMARKABLE.

Crosby is probably the best at maintaining the puck along the boards. He might be the best at creating offensive opportunities while starting in the defensive zone. He's for sure a top 5 stickhandler in the league, and as the media kind of overhypes... He DOES in fact see the ice exceptionally well. He has so many assets, and watching him play, he literally does something, whether it's creating opportunities or cashing in on points, he literally does at least something every shift.

Focusing in on all of those assets, I'd consider him the best player in the world. Right now, you can't say he's the best, but in the grand scheme of things, he's the best.

Yes, he's the best player in the world and if I had to pick one player to start a franchise with, it would be him.

Call me crazy, and most of you probably will, but I'll take Luongo before AO or Crosby if I start a franchise. Goaltending like that will take you further than AO or Crosby could if you start a franchise.

That's not at all a crazy statement. I'd start with Carey Price myself, a 20 year old rookie who has the poise of a 30 year old veteran.

is Crosby really the best? I mean its not deniable he is very good, but why has the media been so obsessed with him as the best, as Gretzky. He was out performed by Ovechkin stat wise so far and in his Rookie year as well. Is it because he is well rounded? or is just because he is the best Canadian young player?

102 points his rookie season as an 18 year old.

120 points his 2nd season.

63 points in 46 games played this season.

He is not overrated.

He's a 20 year old Canadian kid who's put up those kind of great numbers already, and he's only gonna get better.

Is it really that hard to understand why the league markets the hell out of him?

Don't get me wrong, I get sick of hearing about every time he touches the puck. I'm guessing he does too. It's no surprise there's a backlash with all the publicity he gets, but that doesn't negate his accomplishments.

I think Ovechkin's better. Crosby's good, but across the border here he's way overhyped.

I don't think it has to be an either or situation.

They're two very different players who play different positions. The only thing they have in common really is they came into the league the same year because of the lockout.

should anyone reconsider? Ovechkin keeps piling up huge games...

Crosby has seen some pretty huge games himself, IIRC.

I think the ultimate difference between the two, is Ovechkin goes in gigantic spurts and then slumps... Crosby seems to be more consistant. He hasn't really went into a significant slump throughout his career so far.

Crosby is also a terrific leader especially for his age. I don't think anyone has mentioned that. They didn't give him the captaincy because he scores a lot.

He has a lot of heart and plays for the team. He's also willing to put his body on the line because he has such an insatiable hunger to win. This is a trait most stars do not possess. He is a born champion and anyone who knows ANYTHING AT ALL about this game would not argue with that.
