Yeah, Nadal played incredible. Federer played pretty amazingly too. What an insane match. I played tennis with a buddy of mine after the second set had started and got back after playing 2 sets ourselves to see the game slowed by a rain delay and actually got to watch pretty much the entire match. It was epic.

P.S. I agree with everyone on Ivanovic, I have been in love with her for a year or two now. She is perfect and fun to watch (for more than one reason).

Huge Tennis fan here, as Aussie Wing can probably tell you. I never come in this section anymore though so its hard to stay up to date when a thread like this pops up.

The final between Federer and Nadal was epic. Almost as good as the match between Sampras and Agassi that went 5 and no broken serves.

i'd say with the rain delays and the relative significance to both concerned and fed coming back two sets down to win two sets in tiebreakers while facing two or three match points to force the fifth, this was the best match i've ever seen bar none.

so what are people's thoughts on nadal? 5 slams at the age of 22!?!?! give me break! this guy is unreal. he's got such amazing mental fortitude and i don't know if i've ever seen a tougher competitor on the tennis court. right now he's got a better chance than fed at the grand slam in my opinion (fed's only chance is if nadal gets injured in the french), not to mention he is four slams further in the slam race than fed was at his age. noting his improvement on hard courts (semis in aussie), he continues to amaze. realistically he had the opportunity to drop federer in three sets in wimby and definitely should have had him in four! i'm truly impressed.

if nadal can continue to raise his game, and we have no reason to assume he won't, i think he'll have a very good shot at the career grand slam and possibly a genuine-in-season grand slam. is it too soon to be talking about him chasing down sampras? he's just entered his prime and already has five slams to his name. obviously his style of play won't lend itself to anything approaching longevity in this sport, and personally, i think, ultimately he'll fall short of sampras for that reason alone. but i think the next four years nadal can really dominate. maybe not as absolutely as federer had but he doesn't need to because he'll have a four slam head start while entering his prime.

on top of it all he is humble and gracious off the court. he's a true champion and even though i'm a huge federer fan, i'll be happy to see nadal take over the number one this year, he definitely deserves it and it will be in good hands. it's an exciting time for tennis!

Nadal has improved significantly in the last year or two. I remember watching the Australian Open in 2007 and he was basically dominated by Federer in the final. Since that time, he's continuously improved (he doesn't even need to improve on clay, no one seems close). He gave Federer a strong run for his money at Wimbledon in 2007.

I think Federer has a great chance to win the US Open, though. Nadal doesn't perform nearly as well there historically as on other surfaces.

I really like watching Federer play, but Nadal had an answer to nearly every shot Federer tried to make in the 2008 Wimbledon final. Nadal constantly forced Federer to make mistakes by making him take risks. Federer seemed to only get points when his risk-taking paid off, or if he aced.

I disagree with a post early in the thread that said Federer seemed arrogant. I think he's quite gracious, and he comes off as such in interviews. Any time he makes a comment about being a great tennis player or one of the best, he has plenty of evidence to back it up. He also respects his competitors, even low-ranked players. That match against Tipsarevic is proof of that. I've also seen a video of him in his hotel room, talking to an interviewer about how he scouts his opponents, regardless of their world ranking.

Even this year, 2 of 3 of Federer's losses in Grand Slam events were to a younger (and finally healthier) Nadal.

It will be interesting to see how long Nadal's career will last. He's had numerous injuries to his knees, and one of the major strengths of his game is to run for the duration of matches, even 5 hour marathons. If he can't keep that part of his game up, he'll either have to improve his shot-making ability (which has gotten much stronger in the past year or so) or he will be set up for disappointment.

Federer just lost to Gilles Simon in the Masters Cup in Toronto. Wow, his days as #1 are numbered...

what the hell happened to this guy? it's almost a foregone conclusion at this point that nadal will take over number one by the end of the year.

Yep, first up Ginepri served for the win against him but choked. Now he loses to Karlovic who he had beaten in all of their previous 6 encounters. The man is clearly on the way down and in a few days time Rafa will be #1 in the world. Wow.

federer dropped in straight sets today by james blake. blake had lost all of their previous eight encounters, winning only one set in those matches. wow. is this guy done for? before this year i thought the question was would he break the slams record in this season or next season. now i wonder if he can even match the slams record at all. it's to the point where you expect him to lose.

Yeah it's hard to believe, I never thought he'd lose to Blake. Losing to Blake is about the lowest it can get. No disrespect to Blake, but he's a flashy player who will go for his shots but he doesn't have a plan B and for Federer to lose to him is a massive shock. He'll never get back to his 2005-2007 form but whether he can get back to near the level he was remains to be seen. I think he's looking forward to the end of the season where he can recharge the batteries but Nadal, Djokovic and even Murray and improving with every match.

Is anyone else worried about Nadal's longevity?

Rafael Nadal pulled out of the season-ending Masters Cup in Shanghai, citing fatigue after a long season and the need to prepare for the Davis Cup final. Nadal, the world’s top-ranked player, made the announcement on his Web site, describing his withdrawal as “one of the most difficult decisions in my career.”

Nadal, who withdrew from the Paris Masters last Friday with a knee problem after losing the first set of a quarterfinal match, said he was physically run down.

He has tendinitis in his right knee....

Who is everyone tipping to win the Masters Cup in Shanghai?

Simon beats Federer,I can see Aussie celebrating this one.

I think Murray's close to winning the Masters Cup,but I hope he wins the Australian Open instead,so I'll say Tsonga.

Haha correct! :P

Couldn’t believe it, Simon played so well! I, along with Simon himself, thought he blew it when he got down 0-40 at 3*-3 in the 3rd but he played some amazing shots to fight back and take the game. He then broke serve and then served for victory. I've got to admit I'm really starting to like Simon, really good to watch and I love his backhand.
