I took a hit for the team...

Well fans...I drove from Michigan to Alabama on Sunday and arrived in Tennessee early Sunday morning. My route takes me through Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, back to Tennessee and then back to Alabama. I know it's weird but you're crossing through some of these states for only a few miles.

Anyway on with my story....picture this in your mind. I have a small Red Wings logo on my windshield, I was wearing a Red Wings t-shirt. I drove the first leg of Tennessee and had stopped a couple of times in the rest area or a gas station. I left Tennessee heading for Alabama/Georgia then knowing I'm going back into Tennessee it dawned on me. I have my Red Wings flag in my trunk! I know you're all wondering why the hell my flag was in my trunk..well I have this superstition that if I don't put my flag in my window by the first playoff game it doesn't go on. Well I thought that this really should be the exception to the rule. So off I go to find an exit that doesn't have ANY gas stations, rest areas etc. As I don't want to incite a riot. I found the perfect exit called 'stinking creek road'....I swear this is the real name of the road! Anyway I put my flag on and get back on to the highway. Well I was flipped off twice...lol. I then pulled into the Tennessee welcome center! It was about 10am Sunday morning on a beautiful, warm, sunny day and the welcome center was packed! I pull up with my flag a flying and parked and got out of my car and state trooper happened to be there walking his police dog. He walked up to me and said "Boy you have guts!" and I said "Of course I do...I'm a Red Wings fan!" lol Anyway he said maybe I should escort you inside the welcome center and we laughed and I said "I don't think that would be necessary..besides you would protect me wouldn't you?" and he said "Hell NO!" lol Anyway, we got a good laugh out of it and I was escorted into the welcome center by a Tennessee state trooper.

I should also tell you, by the way, that I made this trip by myself. So I just wanted to tell you all that I took a hit for the team!

man i lived in tennessee for over 20 years after moving from michigan. it is a great state. of course i grew up on a farm and everything there so im all about the country that tennessee has to offer. i really miss it sometimes. im here in austin texas now o its a big difference. its not as bad as some of the wings fans think. it isn't a bunch of toofless hillbillies running around the ridges or anything. its reall a great place.

I've been going to Tennessee for many, many years. It's a very nice and beautiful state. I have never thought of any of the southerns states of consisting of toothless hillbillies. They are much friendlier than most northern states and the scenery is so beautiful!

Ehh I'm sure they wouldn't have hurt you. They probably would have just surrounded you and blew those damn train whistles in your face.

lol...I would have had to smack somebody then. I hated hearing that whistle. I was never afraid or I wouldn't have done it. It was just fun and there were some people giggling and smiling at me...it was all in fun.

It's been a dream of mine for years to get out of the snow and move down here. I'm gonna be doing that in the next couple of years. I love the south and always have....but I'll always be a Wings fan!

Nice. When we won the Cup in 02, our family vacation to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina took place about a week later. I was only about 13, but I was so cocky. I made everyone wear Red Wings attire the entire time we were in either NC or SC nd when people asked where I was from at a restaurant or something I would say something like "Detroit, home of the Stanley Cup Champions." And my mom kept trying to make me be quiet.

And at the beach in the sand I wrote 2002 CHAMPS all over the beach.

That is ALMOST as good as Exit 69 on I-75 in MI being Big Beaver Road.

But not quite as good as Kentucky. No, indeed. My first time there, I did some work way out in the sticks on a road called "Goochtown Rd."

The second time, however--this was passing through to travel to Ohio--was when we were driving through and saw a sign advertizing "Big Bone Lick State Park, 20 mi." .. Yep, couldn't believe it. So we stopped there for lunch. It was real. We got a picture of the "Big Bone Lick" sign and everything. I swear to you its a real place. However, what's even funnier... well, here's the beginning of the wikipedia entry on it.

"Big Bone Lick State Park is located in Boone County, Kentucky. It is located on Beaver Road and between the communities of Beaverlick and Rabbit Hash."

WOW!!! Positive things about Tennessee!!!!! How nice! Usually all we hear is we are a bunch of toothless hicks that are all related to each other!!

All of you are welcome to visit anytime - and spend your money. I think I said it another thread, but tourism is the reason we don't have a state income tax. Thank you!

Hillbilly - don't let Chelios know that is your screen name since he called us all hillbillies on the radio. You know I thought he was a real standup guy. The last regular season game here a little girl not far from the Wings bench took a puck to the head. He made sure she had a towel to help stop the bleeding and he even gave her one of his sticks as she was leaving for medical attention. I thought "wow he is a good guy" Now after those hillbilly comments I'm not so sure. What is the real story with him?

By the way - great series!!! Bet you never thought it would go 6 games!

Stop acting like hillbillies and you won't get called one.

And that's coming from someone who's been to countless Preds games over the years.

I've always had good things to say about the southern states. People who make hillbilly jokes though are no different from southerners making northern jokes. I'm dating a guy from Alabama and I hear that I'm a 'northerner' everday! lol

I didn't hear chelios' comments but I'm wondering if they were taken out of context, from what I understand of him he's a very nice guy.
