Out of town wings fans!

My sister and I (I'm a girl too) go to the Pepsi Center a couple times a year when the Wings are in town. Usually we ignore the smack talk and just don't get involved. I have on two occasions had a response to the Red Wings Suck chant after the games. One was just "Scoreboard don't lie" and the other was "Check the scoreboard".

We were at the game last night and learned a new reply to the Red Wings Sucks chant. When they start it, just start chanting back, "Ten Stanley Cups! Ten Stanley Cups!

In reality after last nights game, there weren't a lot of Avs fans left to talk any smack anyway.

Great game! Go Wings!

Damn! I was at the game last night too, and I wish I had thought of chanting that back.

I read some pretty upsetting stories, some of them make me question some of the things I have said, done, or allowed to happen.

The best advice I can give that you should be careful about drinking too much when you are a visitor.

The next best thing I can say is that being a fan isn't so different from the rest of life. You just got to treat people the right way.

Anyway, the year of the so called Stunner at Staples (I think, there were lots of playoff games in California those years) I was in line to piss. There was this guy really trying to give it to me, and he was all over the place. I remember "I oughtta beat your ass" kinda talk.

I said, "Is this really what you want... do you want all these people -- these kids -- to see how bad a sport you are..." after adding a "you realize I am way bigger than you old man" I did my business.

When I got out in the corridor I almost got escorted out of the game. Then the man who was behind me with his two boys said "he didn't do anything wrong, accept put on the wrong jersey... it was real good the way he handled himself in there" and I got to go back to my seat for the third period.

I feel sorry for everyone who has gotten bullied or had kids cry and I kinda wish I didn't get coast through these situation just because I am a big tall guy.

I live in Ducks territory so I am surronded by idiots but when I go to games when the wings come to town I usually take some verbal abuse but there is a line. If it continues throughout the night then i fire back or if they throw peanuts or anything on me then theres a problem. Ducks fans only talk s*** when they score or are ahead, they think they are so tough, then again everyone is Orange County thinks they are hard haha. Dont take too much s*** though, if it is in good fun cool, but if the opposng fan makes a verbal attack on you or say Lidstrom, then knock his ass out haha.

Wow , i guess living here in Canada well in between toronto and Ottawa i have had my share of those type of fans. The sense is here why not chear for a canadian team but the Wings have always been my team . At that rate I have had statistical rants with toronto fans , Avs fans and so on and so on ...I answer generally in kind like for instance for toronto leafs fans.."you have to ask are you gonna see a cup before the world ends" Then you have to remind them how many times we beat them giving its every couple of years because of the nhl schedule ...

Ottawa game i went to wasnt bad, they didnt have much to say because There was a split in fan base that night i went half sens fans and half Wings fans .Of course that was before Stevie Retired and got some overtime that night also .Of course the Wings won 3 - 2 .

In closing you just gotta mention what team records are they usually trying to chase and break oh the stats especially last night wow Franzen simply awesome ...Keep up the great work WINGS ....!!!

Wow, after reading these stories, I have to say how impressed I am with the Minnesota fans. They were nice to me even though I was a Wing fan.

There is a line. It's too bad people cross it.

BTW, thanks for clearing up the dupas thing. I saw the name and was racking my brain trying to remember who he played for. I don't speak Polish. I was sure he had been a Leaf or a Hab. Silly me.

I don't take any crap on this. In NY when someone told me Detroit bought the Cup, I shot right back, "With that logic, the Rangers should have three or four, so what's up with that?" Then point out our draft picks from Lidstrom, Pavel, Hank... (now Franzen). This is a team with the best scouting, perhaps in any sport.

In Philly I get the same crap, and rather than use logic (why waste it?) I taunt them about their old "Legion of Broom" that we dismantled and sent their pathetic dreams of glory down in flames.

Finally when people tell me Detroit never wins, I tell them that's crap "Three cups in ten years, how many cups does your team have in the past ten years?" This is the hardest championship in any sport and that we are in the running every single year is huge.

Basically a combination of logic with direct stabs at where they hurt the most! Don't back down.

Oh, wow. Let's see... At one game at the Verizon Center in Washington I was called a "f'ing piece of sh*t" and had a guy waiting for me (supposedly) to kick my ass. All I did was raise my hands and shrug each time the Wings scored. I don't remember if this was the time (or a different one) in which I went to the bathroom and had a drunk chick tell my wife that she was going to "knock (me) out of my wheelchair if (I) kept it up."

In Raleigh...when the Wings weren't even playing, apparently my Wings hat was enough to piss off a couple of Frat Rats who though it would be fun to throw pennies at the back of my head.

The folks at Nationwide are riDICULOUS, in my opinion. I mean sailor language. Doesn't bother me that much but I really honestly felt like one of them was going to jump me and my Dad the last time I went. All we did was cheer for the Wings but apparently it was enough for one prick to threaten my Dad. Yeah...I could see how his standing up to cheer was SOOOO offiensive that some drunks behind him would feel compelled to scream out "SIT THE F*CK DOWN, DATSYUK" (he was wearing my Pavel Ak-Bars jersey...which I was sort of impressed that the clowns were able to translate the Russian.)

Generally I'll take all the abuse and try not to embellish too much. Frankly I don't want to be roughed up by some prick because I provoked him. I also try to befriend the ushers if I can. I figure if I get my ass kicked and the usher doesn't help maybe I can sue the pants off the organization and make a little coin in the process. ;D

That's a shame in all those scenarios.

I don't mind a little ribbing here and there but examples like those are exactly why I rarely have more than one drink at a sporting event, or "tailgate" getting drunk before a sports event. It's just not worth the time getting into trouble with obnoxious fans (who probably don't act this way most the time) when you are being courteous/respectful and minding your own business. If I get stuff thrown at me that could set me off eventually. But even if people would just rant and curse at me if I was a fan of the opposing team, I'd just laugh it off at how obnoxious and stupid they sound.

I went to a few Wings-Stars games over the years when I was in college in the Dallas area and I rarely had problems with Stars fans whenever I wore Wings apparel. I never provoked or anything like that which helped, but they never did either in the games I went to. I went to see the Wings play the Stars this year in January actually in Dallas, zero problems at all.

Only bad time was a Wings loss by a goal there in 2002 I think where it was late in the game and they were pressing and I thought a Wings breakaway was going to happen, so I got out of my chair excitedly and people yelled at me to sit down pretty rudely, but even then that's a stretch of "jerk" fans.

I had this one instance though at a sporting event (not a Wings game) where this one fan was just acting over-the-top obnoxious in 2001. My college was playing a football game at the time on the road actually in the area where I'm from. The school they were playing generally wasn't that good, but they had a rare good game and were beating the snot out of my school, up by 20, 25 most of the game. The game wasn't crowded, plenty of room to sit, and me and my family were just waiting for the game to end and I was just enjoying visiting them and the fans of the home team were all cool where we sat. This one fan though just kept bitching and ranting and yelling at his team every 5 seconds to the point where he was driving everybody nuts, even his home team fans, and I literally told him more/less, "Could you please stop, your team is actually doing good and is going to win this game, settle down."

I am generally not a rah-rah-sisk-boom-bah cheerleader type of person and also will never really engage in "trash talking". I either just mind my own business or try to strike up a normal get-to-know-you conversation with the people I sit around. I obviously understand the need to make noise or support your team, but people like that, who just cannot shut up beyond the point of being ridiculous, really annoy me.

I live in Pittsburgh and have been a Wings fan since 1983 ( I was 8 yrs old then ).

At that time i lived in North Carilina, it's a long story how I became a fan..but to make it relevant..

I have seen the Wings raise all 3 cups since 1997, at the Joe and on the road. Luckily I travle enough for work that I can use the frequent flyer miles to affod the travel and then somehow I get tickets.

In each city there are jerks who give me crap and I typically just laugh it off or wait untilk after the game and give a little smirk when the Winged wheel rolls out on top.

Here in Pittsburgh the fans are generally pretty good but the "yinzers" as they call them are pretty bad. I went to the Pre-Season game this year ( only time the Wings were here ) and a Pens fan told me that the Wings were an embarrassment because they never have their star player lead the league in scoring. He told me "if they are so good then why can't Lidstrom score like Crosby?"

There is allot wrong with that question, allot wrong with the thought that this person, Mildly retarded ( I think ) equated a good team with the scoring title.

Anyway, I am rambling.

The main point is that there are idiots everywhere who will give you crap for not cheering for the home team..but in reality they are probably just crying out in jealousy.

Wings jerseys are pretty cool.

Living in Denver, I've seen my share of fan abuse and I supose I've dished some out too. It's not nearly the same as it was 10 years ago at the hight of the rivalry or even 6 years ago durring the last cup run.

Come to think of it I get more Wings fans coming up to me when they see a shirt, hat or jersey than anything.

Back in the day I always heard the rws chant. In the can, on the street, during a Broncos game ect. Now it's just occasional.

Then again I'm kinda out there, expecially during the games and playoffs. I always wear Wings stuff to the games and take atleast one 3'x5' flag to hold up. My old house use to have 4 wings flags flying as well as other things including a stained glass winged wheel. My car has flags, bumperstickers and what not. So I am never surprized when the talk is started.

I did have one fan offer to stick my flag up my a$$ at a game, to which I stood up and said you and someone alot taller. I also bet him that he would clear the railing just below us if I tossed him. lol At 6'4" and 230 they always have to look up when they say rws.

My standard reply to the rws chant has always been that you would think that after a decade the fans would figure out that their team chant should include its own team and be positive.

When asked if I'm not afraid to wear the gear I ask them if they know where the Wings are from. When they say yeah Detroit, to which I add and you think I'm afraid of what, a bunch of shulshy snowalls?

At the last game the avs fans tryed to get the osssssgooood chant going, I looked at a bunch and told them that this is how its done. OZZY OZZY OZZY. It didn't take long for wings fans to pick up the chant across the can and it was loud. That was the last time they tryed that. lol

The reality is if you are willing to don the Red and White in another town, you had better be thicked skinned.

I live in the Ducks area as well, and the games against the Wings are funny. These fairweather fans always march in to that Honda Center with their jerseys on over their suit shirts and ties. Most dont even know he difference between icing and offsides. There always the ones that like talking s*** though.

Last year game 4 of the WCF's in Anaheim. I was sitting I think in the 4 row I think. This older guy was like "this is our house, you guys go home" "I am like turn around dude" he responded "your an *******" I stood up over him and was like "f*** you!" I think he then noticed how big of a guy I really am. (6'6" 225) One other guy that night said something rude to my wife and I stood up and told him to "stfu" and all the other fans there were like stone, they didn't want none. i honestly believe my size has made situations simmer down a little. I think if I was a little guy it would have been on, cause I have a mouth if you bad mouth my Wings!

this usually ends most arguments for me:

AND JUST HOW MANY CUPS HAVE THE _______ WON IN THE LAST 15 YEARS?

thats what i thought.

and if they keep yapping its because they know they have just been dominated.

we've had the success of the yankees having NOT bought the team that suits up. and that makes everyone jealous, not surprisingly really.

Just make sure you're not in New Jersey....But that's always my favorite retort at Preds games
