Hank 0 Report post Posted May 14, 2008 If I were the Preds I'd tell the league to go F themselves. If Burke and the Ducks can get a mulligan in the Neidermayer fiasco, why can't every other team ignore the CBA?
VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted May 14, 2008 You gotta wonder how many bored accountants it takes to draw up CBA rules like this. Who cares if it fluctuates?

Nineteen 0 Report post Posted May 14, 2008 It actually has nothing to do with the overall value of the contract or its duration, just the fluctuation throughout. He will likely end up with the same contract only with salary more evenly distributed from year to year.
betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted May 14, 2008 Franzen just got cheaper. If anything he got even MORE expensive. As Nineteen said: the numbers won't change, just the distribution. Erat was scheduled to make about what he should be worth next season. Now his value next season will be inflated.
Hank 0 Report post Posted May 14, 2008 Ducks didn't ignore the CBA at all. Yes they did. And the NHL helped them do it. According to the CBA, the Ducks had two options concerning Neidermayer not showing up for training camp: a) have his salary count against the cap b) fine him $500,000 and not have his salary count against the cap. They chose (b). But now the league, the PA and Burke all worked together and swept it under the rug. BUT, from now on, every team has to adhere to this rule. If I were a GM or owner from any of the other 29 teams I'd be raising hell.

Superman54 91 Report post Posted May 14, 2008 For all those that do not know. Burke doesn't have a wife! He has had a relationship with Bettman for 2 1/2 years now. According to "The Hockey News" , The couple have a house out in Palm Springs and spend a month together every July. Also rumored is that Bettman would like to tie the knot, but Burke has problems commiting himself to one person, which is delaying the wedding bells. I know, I know, it explains alot...I thought so too.

Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted May 14, 2008 I didn't realize there were rules to the content of a contract, outside of rookie year. Does anyone with a good knowledge of the field want to sum up contract conditions for us less knowledgeable?
betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted May 14, 2008 That's only true if Nineteen ends up being right. He is right. The link actually used to be more informative, but it's not there now. The CBA says something to the effect that one year's salary may not be any more than double or less than half of the previous year's, and the salary of a third year may not be more than double or less than half the average of the previous two years, and so on. The contract started at about $2.5 million and went all the way up to $6M+ (practically $7M) in the fourth year and then back down again. No way Erat signs a contract if the team comes to him and says "well, now that the league has rejected the other one, we'd like you to take $5 million less over the course of the deal." Nuh-uh. And hopefully the Preds don't do business like that. (Actually, hopefully they do, but it's a poor way to treat your players.) He'll in all likelihood get a new deal that will probably still be 7 years, $31.4 million, but it will be more evenly spread out. The link used to say that, too, but it no longer does. Doggy 130 Report post Posted May 14, 2008 How embarrassing for the Preds brass. It's a pretty simple rule. I wouldn't have thought any team would be stupid enough to offer a contract like that.
