rdwngnut 0 Report post Posted May 17, 2008 My boss said this to me and I think it would be good. If a coach wants to challange a goal or no goal, throw a red flag. It gets reviewed. If it is in your favor, good. If not, your team takes a 2 minute penalty. I feel at this time of year, all questionable goals need to be reviewed. No one is perfect especially refs. Comments? Comments? good idea in theory, but I think the bigger problem is some calls are missed EVEN on the video review (game 3 in Phili)
OsGOD 3 Report post Posted May 17, 2008 (edited) and then i think if the call on the ice was deemed wrong... a member of the team awarded the overturn wheels out for the ref who made the call... like finding a jury for the court case... they should have a section of refs ready to fill in at a moments notice... OsGOD 3 Report post Posted May 17, 2008 Whats to stop a fan from throwing it on the ice to give his team a breather?
rwfan007 18 Report post Posted May 17, 2008 he would have to do it before play resumes, otherwise it is a hazard on the ice. it is a bad idea, I think the league needs to overhaul the video replay rules and situations. They have enough people looking at the video, why not let them decide rather than a referee who is 20 feet away with an obstructed view?
whiskeybean 0 Report post Posted May 17, 2008 There'll never be enough camera angles to effectively review every goal... so the question I would have is what happens if they genuinely can't tell? Do they still take a 2:00 penalty? That's the downside to hockey in comparison to other sports like football, there's so much going on in front of the goal that sometimes the cameras just can't see it. SweWings 45 Report post Posted May 17, 2008 I think the league needs to overhaul the video replay rules and situations. Agreed. Technology has outpaced the rules by a bit and it wouldn't be a bad thing for the league to thoroughly analyze the situation...
red and white forever 10 Report post Posted May 17, 2008 Agreed. eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted May 17, 2008 give the refs the option to review any calls whatsoever that way they won't look like a bunch of asshats Here's where my position differs from the typical fan. I think the referees should be empowered to conference about and reverse calls if necessary, from offsides to icing to penalties and goals. I don't think we should have the 'well, I called it, what do you want me to do now' situation that we have when refs make a call then realize they screwed up. Also, I would rather see officials in this fashion: Three on-ice referees; one head referee with the authority to overrule the other two if necessary. Off-ice line judges, replacing the existing linesmen. There is no reason for linesmen as we know them to exist in an on-ice role. That role could be better served by off-ice officials whose purpose was to monitor the lines anf make calls on things like icing, offsides, etc. This would require some kind of remote signal that would stop play, but that can be taken care of. Either a remote 'whistle' or perhaps even a goal light style system.
Jwo 7 Report post Posted May 17, 2008 (edited) give the refs the option to review any questionable goals that way they won't look like a bunch of asshats Good idea! It's the playoffs and the right calls should always get made in order for the best team to win. Analyst and reports said Dallas were the best team that game. But those same people have said all playoffs that when Detroit is the first team to score in a game, they have an advantage of winning the game. pavyaz19 1 Report post Posted May 17, 2008 would be a good idea if all hockey decisions were black and white. instead, we are left with judgement calls, and judgement calls (just like all other sports) are not reviewable. the calls that are back and white, such as did the puck cross the line, are all reviewed automatically, as they should be. therefore, throwing a red flag on the ice wouldn't be necessary. The rules that are in place (aside from the delay of game penalty on anyone clearing the puck over the glass even when not pressured) are good rules and I don't think it should change much. It would however be nice to have good referees that don't make calls due to reputation.
Dabura 12,207 Report post Posted May 17, 2008 I've always liked the idea of a challenge system. At the very least, a coach should be able to use one a game, like a time-out. Then maybe assess his team a minor penalty if the call isn't in his favor.
