FunkedUp 29 Report post Posted May 19, 2008 I've been just thinking about the success the Wings have been having. without recent high draft picks. It has led me to wonder about other teams. So, in recent years, how many first round draft picks (that are on the roster) has Detroit had? What about a team like Pittsburgh? I've been trying to think about how many they have, and I could only think of Crosby, Malkin, and Staal, but I know I'm missing others. Its great to see the Wings remain elite without many first round draft picks, while other franchises NEED them desperately to compete. Thoughts...
betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted May 19, 2008 Our first round picks for the last 15 years: 2007: Brendan Smith 2005: Jakub Kindl 2000: Niklas Kronwall 1998: Jiri Fischer 1996: Jesse Wallin 1995: Max Kuznetsov 1994: Yan Golubovsky 1993: Anders Eriksson That's it. I think it's pretty clear the Wings built this dynasty for the most part despite their first-rounders, not because of them. But it's not really true that the Wings remain elite without high draft picks. Holland is just really smart about trading them away, and doing so has brought us a lot of talent. Doggy 130 Report post Posted May 19, 2008 Hossa, Flower, Gonchar, Whitney and Sykora were all first-rounders too. There's probably more. Kronwall is the only first rounder for us that I can think of.
Xitium 272 Report post Posted May 19, 2008 (edited) 2 out of the last 4 years the Wings have not had a first round draft pick, iirc. One of the 1st rounders was I think Kindl (He isn't playing yet, just thinking out loud...). Also one of those years the highest pick was round three and that was Franzen. tommingthepuck96 1 Report post Posted May 19, 2008 (edited) Detroit devleops their players. Had datsyuk, zetterberg, hudler, filpula ect been drafted by other teams besides detroit i dont think they would be nearly as good as they are today. Not taking anything away from them, but detroit does the best job at developing players. Edited May 19, 2008 by tommingthepuck96
RWK23 0 Report post Posted May 20, 2008 Pitt has three number one overall picks (Crosby, Malkin, Fleury) and a number two overall (Staal). Like Doggy pointed out, they have several other first rounders on their team as well. The Wings' first rounders are Cleary (13th overall), Stuart (3rd overall), and Kronwall (29th overall). That's it, unless I'm mistaken. I'll research a little bit more.

We sure do love drafting defenseman. Who was the last forward we drafted in the first round and how long ago was it? It'd be nice to see a change up this year with our current depth at defense. Salary Cap is going to break all that talent apart shortly.
