eh, the guy doesn't really seem like a total red wing hater. to me, he's just a grit groupie who doesn't like what kenny has done with the team.

Let me say this: I used to like the Red Wings. Key word: used to. When I was just starting to get back into hockey in the mid 1990's, the Red Wings were the second closest team to me, and having family in Michigan, they became a favorite of mine. Great players, great games, fun rivalry with Colorado that resulted in some good, fun to watch, rough-and-tumble hockey.

And then Ken Holland took over as GM. The Wings won two Cups with their tough and talented teams and after getting knocked out of the playoffs in 1999, the toughness was dismantled. The Red Wings won the Cup in 1997 while also being in the league's top 10 in fights. In 1998, they won again, last in fighting, but with plenty of willing fighters in Darren McCarty, Jamie Pushor, Joe Kocur, and Brendan Shanahan. And in 1999, a playoff loss with the same group (replace Pushor with Martin Lapointe). For the next three seasons, the Wings were dead last in the league in fights. In spite of their 2002 Cup win, this was not the team I once liked watching.

2002 the Wings had 23 fights in the regular season. The next season, the only reason they weren't at the league's basement in that category is because Sean Avery was around, and every other team decided to copy their blueprint: dump all toughness and bring in a bunch of high-flying European guys who fall down if touched.

The Red Wings went from being the epitome of my favorite brand of hockey to the dictionary definition of the kind of game I hate. It's boring. It's weak. It's not the way North American hockey was meant to be played at its highest level.

And with them about to win another Cup, you can guarantee every team will try to copy them. Again. And the game will continue on further down the drain.

the guy could very well pass as one of our very own "realists" here on lgw. ;)

He's in Kansas City-- I mean-- can you blame him for his intense dislike of a real sports town?

He's not in Kansas City - he's in Wichita Falls, TX <_<

Kansas City might not bow down to the feet of the Royals, but I wouldn't say we're not a real sports town. They live/breathe/die by the Chiefs, and if they were given an NBA team - I'd imagine it'd get some crazy fandom.

Suffice to say, it will never be a hockey city... and that saddens me deeply :(

As far as the d-bag who was quoted saying Cheli was our most beloved Red Wing, he's just your stereotypical Anti-Red Wings fan. No need to waste time worrying/analyzing his misguided blog.

This is a face that says:

"MA, I'm in the middle of a big D&D tournament, can't you bring my Clearasil and Malt-o-Meal down here!?

Yes I have a job already, I start delivering papers next week!

NO, ma, this isn't PORN, I'm keepin' it real as a hockey journalist...no ma, it doesn't pay anythiing yet, but IT WILL!

MA, DON'T OPEN THAT CLOSET DOOR!!! (Crashing in background, heavily-used inflatable love doll spills out along with ball-gag and light-sabers)

Yeah, I bet Ken "greatest GM at finding talent in the history of hockey" Holland is deeply hurt by this lad's insightful commentary.:blink:

The guy can really be picked apart for everything in this article, except for the Aurie piece. At the very least, it should be something that Ilitch family respond to. There may be a good reason for the actions taken by the organization, but they've never stepped forward and explained their position, and that makes them look suspect.

One good point out of 10, but a good point nonetheless. This has never sat well with me, never will sit well with me. It should be in the rafters. Just because Ilitch has his own set of rules for retiring numbers doesn't mean it never happened, and that's what he's trying to make it look like. I assume he'll do the same with Konstantinov and Fischer, not in the rafters, just out of circulation. I don't really agree with the "numbers in purgatory" thing.

Hmmm, first he says, "Red Wings fans. Without bias, I find you all to be the most insufferable, fair weather, ignorant fans in the world."

Then he says right after: ""When I was just starting to get back into hockey in the mid 1990's...."

Maybe he better define what he thinks "fair weather" means.

First of all, I'm fascinated by these accusations that the Wings are a soft, non-physical team. Have they watched this team play this year? Have they even heard of Kronwall? Did they notice that Datsyuk had more hits than anyone else last night?

On a deeper level, though, this common complaint about "soft Europeans" infiltrating hockey and injecting their evil "skill" (gasp, shock, horror) into the game at the expense of lumpen cloggers like Tie Domi is not just xenophobic, it's stupid. I don't understand this reaction against skilled players; it's as if playing the game with finesse and elite ability is somehow destroying, instead of improving, the NHL.

The funny thing is, I hear this about my English football club, Arsenal. Like the Wings, they have a roster filled with foreign (non-British) players who've brought a higher level of technical, watchable skill to the English game while eschewing some of the traditional English physicality; sometimes, it makes them vulnurable to an organized, defensive, physical team (much like Wings teams in the past), but overall, it makes them a much more fun team to watch on a week-in, week-out basis. But instead of applauding them for bringing new skill and finesse to their game, many English hate them because they don't employ enough "good honest Brits."

Globalization is touching all aspects of life, including professional sports, and many people can't quite bring themselves to accept the change that they can't stop. And that makes them say some idiotic things. This guy isn't the first, and he won't be the last.

The entire blog: You should hate the Detroit Red Wings team because of their fans.

I am sure I speak for a lot of Detroit Red Wings fans when I say: f*** you, Drew Pelto.

It's a blog by somebody who isn't a journalist or is an amature journalist, and it's a blog by somebody who doesn't like Detroit. Enough said. I question your sanity if you take this guy serious for more than 2 seconds.

I'm pretty sure this thread alone has given that loser more webhits today than it's seen in months.

9. Red Wings' stiff/scrub/plug/useless spare part Kirk Maltby has somehow won three Stanley Cups. Marcel Dionne, Dino Ciccarelli, and Gilbert Perreault, each ten times the player Maltby could ever hope to be, have none between them.

Does this jag realize the redwings had Dino and couldnt win a cup with him. s*** they had Coffee and Ciccarelli and couldnt win a cup. Personally I would take Maltby over Ciccarelli any day. Plus Kirk is a nicer guy than Dino is any day of the week.

I guess that was his response to msn.com Top 10 Reasons Why The Wings Will Win the Cup.

This time of year you get a lot of that kind of thing. I used to take sports that serious where I hated teams, but I was 15 years old. 16 years later, I know sports is entertainment, and won't allow myself to have that kind of hated towards something that's just a game and I have no control over.

Too bad he's too cowardly to publish or respond to comments, typical keyboard tough guy with no spine.
