Re-Signings, Stuarts Shoulder, Flips RFA value

"Whatever's ailing his shoulder has apparently been deemed a relatively minor injury by the specialist he saw in San Jose, so he won't need surgery to correct the problem."

"Holland will need to give his best "buy into the program" (as he told Mr. Khan) sales pitch to Pat Brisson, because there are bound to be at least two or three GM's who see a rock-solid, physical, stay-at-home guy who just won a Stanley Cup as a worthy recipient of a $4.5-5.5 million contract, and there's no way in heck that KH will pay Stuart over the $3.5 million he earned this past season."

"Ken Holland has stated that he's going to match any offer for Filppula, who earned $850,000 this past season. It's arguable that the Wings will probably settle on a contract in the $1.5 million range with him anyway, so anything under $2.6 million wouldn't strike a serious blow to the Wings' cap situation."

Just in case here are the salary comp. of note:

$1,307,812-$2,615,625 Second-round pick

$2,615,625-$3,923,437 First- and third-round picks

FLIP VALUE

Stewie & Cap

If Lowe was any indication, Filp could recieve an offer sheet over 4 mil. Pavelski got like 3.5 per year and he had 5 or so more points than Filp.

I don't like this situation at all because I think there are alot of chance someone would do that.

Keep in mind we don't HAVE to match if Flip doesn't take the offer sheet. We can very ewll have an agreement with Flip that we'll take him under a certain ceiling and he would turn down an expensive offer sheet to stay.

I agree. If KH can get Filp resigned for under $3M/year his kool-aid is quite tasty.

I don't get it. Why is Kenny screwing around. Sign Flip for a couple mil a year NOW and you don't have to worry about an offer sheet - unless Kenny is hoping to low ball him when no one submits and offer sheet.

If someone offers him 4 million or something like that, let him go.

I'll take those picks, and Val will not be worth as much to any other team as he is to us.

He is a good player, but he is better for playing with the cast around him. He doesn't really make players around him better.

A great fifth or sixth forward for us. A good top six for someone else, we would look like Burke letting the Oilers hand him a good draft pick.

July 1st

He is in the last year of his contract, he can sign anytime, doesn't have to be July 1st or does it? Is this new under the CBA that you can't sign a RFA until their contract expires?

I disagree, there are alot of teams in this league right now where he would be in their top 4 forwards and would get 1st line pp time. I want him to stay with the Wing's obviously but I think if he went to a team who struggles to score goals they would give every chance to play top line minutes and top pp minutes to prove himself. I think he is a good top six forward for us with potential to be great but could be a great top six forward with alot of teams right now. They aren't in a terrible rush to force production with Flip, if he gets around 25 goals next year I think the Wing's would be more than happy with that. His progression would suggest that he very possibly could hit that plateau.

Despite what Kenny said, do you think there is a limit to what the Wings will spend on him? With Z and Mule both FA's next year, overspending on Flip might chew up alot of cap space. Im just worried about not having enough in the end to keep all three key guys.

They don't generally overspend. I trust them to go the right amount. Filpulla won't command a huge salary. He's played well, but inconsistent, and he's never played flat out amazing for any period of time. Give him a raise, but not a big one.

Those teams that would make Flip a top 4 forward are teams any resonable player wouldn't want to play for - unless of course they offer him ALOT of $$$...Just think of Khabibulin; went from Stanley Cup to the basement with 1 signature...I agree that Flip will continue to improve/mature over the next few years as a Red Wing, but kinda hard to say what'll happen if he goes elsewhere, & alot is expected from him - he may not be able to deliver.

Talk on the Vancouver radio here that the Canucks might be just the team to put a bid in for Flip.....to your point above....a ton would be expected of him and there is little chance of him delivering with the cast and pressure to produce here....

I like Flip very much, but if teams put in crazy numbers and his choice is money over success, then see ya....Holland will make the right moves

If rival GMs are gonna offer Stuart $4 million plus - then I say lets see what our young guys from GR are capable of; if anything Holland could make an acquisition for an experienced Dman by the trade deadline.

As for Filppula - he's not worth anything more than $2 large (and that's being generous) at this point in his career...If any rival GM gets silly, & offers $3 million plus - just take the picks, & walk away.

If the stories are true that he cannot and won't play outside of Cali/West coast because his stepkids have to remain in Cali - then that pretty much leaves 4 teams: back to Kings, Ducks, Sharks, or maybe Phoenix. Ducks have too many salary problems already, Sharks will go for Campbell first, back to dungeon Kings or maybe up-and-coming Coyotes???

Any GM that pays Filppula $4m+ a year and gives up a 1st, 2nd and 3rd round draft pick for him is a complete moron. No-one would do it.

Damn it! He's going the Oilers!

you have too much confidence in GMs ability to make sane decision. The point of RFA an offer sheet is that it is a ridiculous ammount so that player's current club won't match it based on sanity reason.

I think there are very capable GMs out there who would do that.

I'm dissappointed by Filp/his agent or Holland. This really shouldn't have gone this far especially just after we won the cup.

Exactly. Why isn't he already signed?

relax folks one of the reasons the wings signed Leino is because Filppula is going to mentor the guy

he's not going anywhere

Exactly!

Maybe there's no rush because both parties know he will re-sign?

I think you missed my point. It's not really about the money. Losing a 1st, 2nd and 3rd for a player like Flip who, to be honest it yet to prove much at all, is ludicrous. I honestly believe that Kevin Lowe would've preferred that Burke match the offer to Penner because that cost the Oilers far too much. I think he's pretty bloody lucky the Sabres matched Vanek's offer.

My point - in almost all cases, RFA's are not worth it at all.
