Former Wings that are Available

Recommended Posts

Considering the "old friend" comment that was made by Kenny in Ansar Khan's article, I compiled a list of former Wings that are free agents right now.

Bertuzzi, Bootland, Mowers, Williams, Avery, Shanahan, Lapointe, Taylor, and Fedorov.

Old friends, eh? Let's eliminate a few names that I wouldn't consider "old friends." With only the players worth mentioning to get the fans excited, the list becomes:

Bertuzzi, Avery, Shanahan, Lapointe, and Fedorov.

I can see 2 of these 5 coming here with a total salary of under 2.5 mil each. Avery will want cash as will Bert. Shanny, Marty, and Feds know their worth and know that they will fit in the system, not be the center of it.

All of them have positives and negatives associated with them. Feds and Shanny are PP specialists with a lot of experience in a defensive system, and Feds is one of the best 2 way players in the history of the game, but they are both aged. Lapointe is strictly a 3rd or 4th line agitator with limited offensive ability, but good leadership. Bert, when healthy, is an offensive threat. But health is a HUGE issue. Avery is the biggest paradox. I like him as a center of attention for the other team, he skates hard and can hit and fight. I loved him when he was a Wing. But, off ice is another issue, and I don't like "divers" on the Wings.

i'd love to see shanny, feds, or marty back in the winged wheel. i doubt it'll happen though. he's probably talking about bertuzzi and avery, and they're no friends of mine!

I just dont see how Bertuzzi was a friend. He barely had time to unpack his suit case and then he was off to the ducks.

Whats with all the Shanahan love all of a sudden? If I recall, wasn't he a total defensive screw-up who was unwilling to play along with Detroit's defensive style (and rumored to not be able to play to Babcock's role for him)?

Dont worry. Hes not being pursued by the Red Wings. Id bank on that for the reasons you stated. Detroit has moved on.

We don't need any of these guys.

I'd be open to getting Fedorov or Bertuzzi back in reduced roles, around 3rd-line even strength and 2nd-line PP duties assuming they would take pay cuts.

Fedorov can play the point on the PP still, Bertuzzi put up respectable numbers last season in Anaheim when he was healthy. Not by $4M a year standards obviously but still put up some stats, hence suggesting he takes a pay cut.

the "old friend" referred to was Bertuzzi, it was said right in the article. And since thats the case, NO THANKS

Bertuzzi, I believe, would be fine here in Detroit. We're not looking for a 60 goal scorer. He had 40 or so points last year, was a + player, and is a big body, which is something the Wings may need a bit more seeing as how we just won the cup and all. All in all he's a solid second liner at this point in his career (also something that our team needs). I also believe he may be a good fit as a mentor for the Mule, as Franzen shares a lot of similar qualities that Bertuzzi did during the start of his career. And after passing waivers at 4M, his price will be better than ever.

I really like Brendan SHanahan. Don't see a point to bringing him back though. We don't need Avery's distractions. Bringing back Fedheadcase would be awkward for everyone. Bertuzzi could possibly recover to his glory self of '02, but I his baggage isn't worth the gamble. Who would sit so LaPointe could play?

Play McCarty, Helm, and Abdelkader. If Bertuzzi ends up back in Detroit, I'll roll with it. Same with Fed's I s'pose.

Brendan

Sergei

Marty Lapointe

depending on their price tag

no Bertuzzi, no Avery and definitely no Williams

If there were a bobbin-head emoticon saying "YES!', it would be right here.

Agreed on any of the three. They'd all play their butts off for the Wings.

Shanahan was one of my favorite Wings, but he is not what the team needs.

Fedorov.. just, no.

Lapointe is also not what the Wings need.

Bertuzzi, sadly, is more toward what the Wings need, as much as I'd now hate to reverse my position, given who is now available on the market.

Sean Avery is far too much a risk, and the guy has too much a big mouth, Williams is a simple no. I'd rather see the team bring up some Griffins before trying on Avery, Fedorov, Williams, Shanahan, and Lapointe.

Shanahan could be just what the Wings need. Tell me you don't want his size, hands, and hockey sense? can he work with Babcock? I'm not so sure.

Lapointe is too slow now to contribute on this team, not even in the "Drake roll"

Tim Taylor has retired, and even had the smarts to turn down a token shift or two in a Lightning game this year. Good guy.

Todd Bertuzzi was, and still can be, a dominating power forward. We picked him up as damaged (recovering) goods, and he left to take a payday. I'd take the payday too if I wasn't sure I'd ever be 100% again. As would you. Now if he's at 90% of his old Vancouver self, and willing to play for less than 3 million - I would absolutely take him. Will he ever be a first line guy again? No, but just imagine him on a line with Franzen. And he'd like to come back here... Simply awesome.
