Konnan511 1,736 Report post Posted July 5, 2008 I've been wondering this. Players in their last year of their contract can be signed to an extension right. Two questions, do these extensions factor into the players cap hit that season or does it kick in when their previous contract expires leading into to their new extension? Seems simple eh, but then I ask this. Would it be feasable to sign a player like Flip to a one year deal at X Mil. Which would put him into a contract year. Then a day or so later sign him to a Y year Z mil.extension since he is in the last year of his current contract? This would sign him to a deal that would take him off the RFA market and then give him the security for the future that all players want. All while keeping his cap hit for this coming season to a low number and getting him off the RFA market.

Although, Group II's who sign a one-year deal (essentially, who sign their qualifying offer or go to arbitration) can't be negotiated with for a new contract until January 1st. Cicada 4 Report post Posted July 5, 2008 i'm fairly sure they'res also some rule which prevents players being signed to a new contract immediately after signing a 1 year deal. Kenny H was talking about how he can't negociate with Hossa till the 1st of January, even though already got 1 year remaining. I guess it's so GM's can't get around cap issues by signing a player to a cheap 1 year deal and then extending it with a monster deal two days later.
