TAMPA, Fla. (AP)—The Tampa Bay Lightning signed goalie Mike Smith to a $4.4 million, two-year contract extension on Monday.

Smith was acquired from the Dallas Stars in February. The incumbent starter played in 13 games with the Lightning last season.

“It goes without saying Mike has a bright future,” Tampa Bay vice president of hockey operations Brian Lawton said.

Smith will share time with Olaf Kolzig, the former Washington Capitals’ goalie who was signed as free agent earlier this month.

I know a lot of people aren't sold on Smith, but I think he's a quality starter, so it's a good deal for Tampa to solidify this position. If they don't sign some defensemen soon, Smith is going to be handling the puck more than any of their forwards.

I assume you either meant the need D or you were being sarcastic about Smith handling the puck more than the forwards, they have nothing but forwards.
