This year I want to start an NHL fantasy season. I've never done it before and I was hoping you guys could give me some advice.
I have some questions like:
What is the best site to do it on? I dont want to pay, and I don't have a huge amount of time.
When does the season start? Is it late august?
Is it even fun or worth it?

Focus on wingers and goalies...
There are a ton of high-point centers, but nearly as many wingers. Instead of Crosby and LeCavalier look to Ovechkin and Iginla. Goal scorers are more valuable than playmakers because there are less of them and most sites award points for shots on net (this makes Ovechkin even more valuable than Crosby). Don't wait until later in the draft to start picking goalies -- pick one up at least in the first two rounds. Defencemen can be an afterthought for the most part when drafting.
Yahoo is the simplest and easiest site to play at.
Fantasy hockey is nice because it does not require near the amount of time as the other fantasy sports.

Red Kelly #4 and Larry Aurie #6 belong in the rafters!!!
"For my game, I don't need to score the goal," Konstantinov once explained. "I need someone to start thinking about me and forgetting about scoring goals."

Whatever you do, just make sure that you trade me Dats Lids and Hank. You won't really need them. Just kidding. I really blow at it but have tons of fun, just learn and enjoy.

I have used Yahoo for the last 4 years and it always starts up late August. Yahoo is hands down the best free one out there I think.

Yahoo! is the way to go, I've done 3 leagues there in the last few years, its definitely the simplest and best, its free as well though you do need an account with Yahoo!

Offensive Dmen are also of significant importance; not too many guys out there capable of 50 plus points, & with Yahoo ya gotta dress up to 4 every night (unless you're in a private league with modified rules/layout).
