Opie 308 Report post Posted September 24, 2008 I find it funny that there is a log jam at defense but not at forward, however this team is as deep at forward as it at D.
The Secret 304 Report post Posted September 24, 2008 Very cool article... thanks for the post! I hope the Wings front office have found the cure for the Stanley Cup hangover... Logjam on defense and Hossa for the chaser. I think we have a good a chance as there has ever been to repeat... here's to hoping!
Shutemdown 23 Report post Posted September 24, 2008 It's because teams carry more forwards to spread over 4 lines than they do defensemen (typically only 3 pairings). Also, the forward position consists of 2 wingers and a center, whereas defense consists of just 2 men, playing right and left. There are more positions to be filled in a forward role, as opposed to defense, which carries a much smaller contingent of players.
NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted September 24, 2008 It might not earn him the NHL’s MVP award, but Lidstrom doesn’t seem to mind. “No, (the Hart) is something I don’t think that much about,” Lidstrom said. “I enjoy winning Stanley Cups. Aussie_Wing 354 Report post Posted September 24, 2008 Since March 23, 1999—the date of those deadline deals—the team has drafted defensemen like Niklas Kronwall (2000 first round), Jonathan Ericsson (2002 ninth round), Derek Meech (2002 seventh round), Kyle Quincey (2003 fourth round) and Brendan Smith (2007 first round)—a group that could help form the core of the Detroit defense in the coming years. Umm, Jakub Kindl? Seems he's no longer rated by the journalist.
NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted September 24, 2008 How did we get this log jam on defense? By having the best GM and management in the game.
eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted September 25, 2008 The Wings got in a logjam on defense by resigning two players this summer to fill the same role; #4 stay-at-home defenseman, physical player, PK and shot blocking specialist. One was signed in case the other didn't, and will almost certainly be the defenseman moved to rectify the problem that his signing caused in the first place.
