Darren McCarty cleared waivers

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

Now that he's healthy, McCarty is on waivers to give the Wings the flexability to bring up a goalie at a moment's notice. Once he passes waivers they can send him down at any point for a specified period to allow them to bring up a goalie.

We went through this with Downey last year, and we'll see it again for both players...

I DO hope they bring Downey up for the Blues game since they've got a history of cheap shot BS.

What's with this goalie thing? I keep reading how the Wings want to be able to bring up a goalie whenever. Why? Osgood has a history of not getting a ton of injuries, and the ones he does sustain dont keep him out for long. Conklin's only missed a few scheduled starts in his life. I dont understand there obsession with that. Not you Marcus, just in general, I dont know why there being THAT cautious.

As for Downey, he needs to play against St Louis, Dallas, Anaheim, Chicago and Nashville. Him or McCarty, one needs to be in. These are our rivals, and there going to be gunning for us. We need someone to answer the bell.

The problem is that this isn't the original six era... you can't just shove a d-man out on the ice wearing the injured goalie's gear when you don't have a back-up on hand :P

Not that Lilja wouldn't be a kickass goalie!

Just because McCarty was waived (if he is not claimed) does not mean he will automatically go down to Grand Rapids. I think the waiver is good for 30 days. So in the next 30 days they can move hiim up and down any number of times without additional waivers. Waiving him now is good also (besides cap reasons) because all teams are set with their tough guy and the only one out with an injury is Brashear for Washington and he is day-to-day. Apparently Babcock liked McCarty's play during the preseason. So the likelihood of McCarty being claimed is probably nil.

According to Bob McKenzie, the Wings have placed Darren McCarty on waivers.

Yawn. And this impacts the Wings how? It was dumb to sign him in the first place. Charity case. The past is the past, let it and him go.

The Wings just went from being the weakest team on hockeyfights.com to cementing themselves as the powder puff team of the NHL for 2008/09. Wow.

Who will be the first Wings player injured due to this negligence of having anyone with any fighting ability... No, McCarty is way past his prime- Downey should be with the team.

Well, my first reaction was to retrieve my heart from the pit of my stomach.

Then I got my senses together and realized that Howard was down, and if we had a goalie injury we'd need him back.

So, what with cap space and all that, I can live with this.

Someone has to be put on waivers.

Better to put the Cart before the Hoss.

Christ. Listen- Kopecky, while useless right now, has upside. Remember who else used to be useless but was held onto for their potential? Franzen. Before the preseason last year he simply looked like a 4th liner with pk potential. At least Kopecky had better than a ppg while in the AHL.

Stop reacting like the Wings are dumping a big, young physical enforcer type to keep a 36 year old player with zero upside. It's the exact opposite situation. We know what we're getting with D-Mac. And one can reasonably predict the path D-Mac's career is on.

Stop thinking like you're picking the kickball team a recess and start thinking like a professional manager would.

Dude, of all those people you quoted, I don't think you meant to quote me. Your comments are in complete agreement of mine.

Mac and Cheli were both signed for nostalgia and have nothing to offer the team on the ice anymore, which is where the games are played (according to wikipedia). Both are SPECTACULAR locker room presences, but so is the equipment guy. We shouldn't have either of them filling a roster spot that we could use for Helm, Leino, or Ericsson, which even saying it just now makes me think 'wow, Babs is right, those are the best 3 players I think I've ever seen sent to the minors'. Thanks for the memories Mac, good luck elsewhere. Which brings me to this point too, if no other team in the league wants the guy for next to nothing of waivers, why should he be on the defending Stanley Cup champion for nothing?

Because no other team is as soft as we are right now.

If we don't play him, no one else surely will.

With your gorilla math the Wings are soft, to every other team in the league the Wings are a nightmare and no one wants to play them.

Feast on that a little, same old stuff but at least the carousel will change direction for a bit.

Watch our players duck and cover like we did 2 years ago.

You probably enjoyed that didn't you?

We haven't had a real enforcer the past five games, and I didn't see any ducking and covering.

All I saw were defensive breakdowns.

But you can keep thinking the sky is falling because we don't have a big bad enforcer to protect our oh so fragile little players.

QFT.

Despite what some people seem to imply, the regular season does have importance and I'd rather not watch our guys get manhandled for the next 77 games. If you think that Downey and Drake had no impact last season then you obviously weren't paying attention. I think it's ridiculous to imply we can't give up 1 roster spot to a guy that actually fights and checks, we're already giving up at least 2 roster spots right now to guys who contribute little to nothing...

If the Red Wings lack one ingredient thus far, it's Dallas Drake's relentless forechecking--not his fists. Crashing and banging to generate turnovers doesn't necessarily require dropping one's gloves, and it accomplishes a similar task in "creating space" for players to make plays. I'll take a nasty forechecker over a goon any day.

I think I should rename this thread the Twilight Zone because it's incredible how so many people can see things so differently watching the exact same thing. The Wings had the Rangers fans crying because of what they did to them and not just talking their whining about the late powerplay. Calgary fans do it all the time as well and wonder why their team never does anything about it.

It's delusion to think the Wings are soft.

No one we've played this year looked terrified to play us. You're obviously fantasizing in some delusional dream.

Instead, teams want to play against us because we're the defending champs. They have even more incentive to run our players and get into our faces. Nobody is afraid of the Wings so far.

What does that have to do with us having an enforcer in the lineup? Nothing. The reason teams aren't afraid to play us is because they have nothing to lose when they play us. I've read GDTs on how people think it is so great they were able to play with the big dogs that are the Detroit Red Wings and people talk positvely about getting a single point here.

They have motivation because they want to prove something, not because we are soft.

How many players have been run so far? Like I said their lack of fear isn't because Mac or Downs aren't playing. It is because we are the team to beat and we have looked like absolute crap.

I was responding to the previous poster's thread so you have to view my post in context.

Eventually we will play teams that will play dirty against us, as other posters have pointed out. There are numerous such teams in the league.

Redwings record last 3 years (Pres trophy standings) *Major injuries during the year

07-08 54 21 7 115 (Winner) Stanley Cup winner * NONE

06-07 50 19 13 113 (Tied for first lose tie breaker) WCF lose * NONE

05-06 58 16 8 124 (Winner) Lost in 1st round of playoffs * NONE

So tell me again how many players got run in those seasons and how many of them were manhandled to the point were it cost the wings anything. Drake's impact was the forechecking presence had nothing to due with his fists, plus if you remember correctly, seeing as you pay so much attention to the games, Dallas had a horrible regular season and most on here (including me) were questioning him on the team, then he had a terrific post season and showed why he was on the roster.

Hell, in the 07 playoffs, Homer got mashed by two Duck players and then turned around and scored a point on the very first (or at least one of his first shifts) back on the ice. AND he was healthy and playing in the next game which was a loss.

BTW who are the two roster spots that are providing little to nothing?

EDIT: Clarity

So far it's Hudler and Kopecky.

I might give Hudler the benefit of the doubt because he has some skills, but Kopecky has done nothing so far for people to praise him.
