2008-2009 NBA Season Thread (Pistons trade for Allen Iverson)

Surprised I didnt see this thread created yet.

Anyway, got some breaking news to all you Pistons fans. ESPN is reporting that the Pistons will trade Billups and McDyess to Denver in exchange for Iverson. Don't have a link yet but am looking for it.

If this trade goes thru, I am shocked. Not sure this is the trade we need to improve this team, despite the fact that the Pistons need to make a move.

Terrible trade IMO. I have watched Iverson here in Denver and he is the epidemy of the selfish NBA gotta get my points player. Billups - although getting older - is the backstop of this Pistons team. Plus a character guy - hard to find in the NBA.

Only good point for me is I might actually pay to see the Nuggets with Chauncy. Although he will have to deal with the antics of Mellow.....

I don't really see how this makes the Pistons any better....

I agree with you Timothy I don't know how this is going to help the team, but with that said I LOVE this trade. Smith said A.I. wants to here, because he wants a ring. We need that chip back on our shoulders, and hunger back. Plus if it doesn't work out we get tons of cap room from A.I's contract (plus Sheed's for that matter). According to some people next summer will be the best NBA FA pool ever with Kobe, Lebron, Wade, Bosh, Stodimarrie, ect looking for the big bucks.

Wow, not a fan of this trade. Everyone I know who follows basketball agrees that he's a selfish ball hog who has the potential to screw up the dressing room. And who could forget the classic "practice" video? Totally didn't see this one coming. I'm gonna miss Chancey and 'Dyess, but here's hoping that AI can be the "Answer" the Pistons need.

I can see where your coming from, but a lot of this A.I. talk is same the same talk Pistons fans said when we got Sheed. I know the opinions from a lot of people are starting to change on Sheed, but you can't deny it worked out for the best.

This deal could blow up in Detroit's face but at least we did something that has be potential to bring us back to the promised land because there was no hunger in the past two playoffs.

That is exactly right, but I think it's worth the risk. And if it doesn't work out we have a lot of free money.

Your not looking at the big picture though. What's the worst that can happen? We won't make it to the finals? It's not like were suppose to come out of the East anyway, but with A.I. we get some hunger back for a ring, we probably will get Dice back, and lets say this explodes in our face we have 36 million dollars of free cap to go after Bosh, Amari, or someone else who is a big time free agent.

Yup - happened here in Denver - they were one pathetic crew even with AI. I'd take Chauncy over AI any day. Nuggets win on this one.

Sheed wasn't supposed to fit in here in Detroit either.

We will see. I am not a huge fan of the trade, but I like it much better if we can get Dice back. I think Dice + Billups > Iverson, but if we re-sign Dice, that's probably a win.

Besides, Joe D. has unquestionably earned the right to make moves like this without second-guessing. I trust Dumars 200%. The guy is brilliant. We've gotten to the point with the Wings where if they take a Swedish guy with the last pick, we assume there must be something to it just because it's the Wings and Hakan Andersson making the call. Same with Joe D. He always makes the right moves.

I've always had mixed feelings on AI anyway. Sure, there's the "PRACTICE?!" side of him. That's the questionable side. But make no mistake about this either - the guy always, always, plays his guts out on the floor. There's never any doubt about his effort. Detroiters always appreciate that. I think he's coming to the Pistons at the right time in his career to make an impact. I hate losing Chauncey but I'm glad for him that he's getting a second chance with the hometown team.

I'm bummed Billups is gone :crybaby:. I'm not a big Basketball guy, so I really can't say who got the better of the deal. Mostly my reaction is based on the fact that Billups has been my favorite Piston since Ben left for Chicago.

It's not fun to see your favorite players go, but that's sports.

Really wanted to stay and hear them disect this trade on sports radio today but unfortunately I had to work. Just broke the news about the trade here right before I left for work.

The more I think about it. I like the move. In the spirit of election time, I endorse this trade.

I am sad to see Billups go but he was getting older and he wasn't gonna get better anyway. We weren't winning a championship with him on this team. AI gives us a shot this year and if it doesn't work out...let him go along with Rasheed. Use that $35 million to go after free agents like Shawn Marion and Chris Paul. I would love to see Paul in a Pistons jersey.

Trust in Joe D Pistons fans!!

Or LeBron James! :punk:

I'm with you man....the more I think about it the more I like it. Especially if it means we can clear Dice's rather large salary off the books and then get him back for a lot less....that's a nasty good move right there. Vintage Joe Dumars. I love me some Chauncey Billups, and it's a real bummer to see him go. And those who are worried about Chauncey's skills deteriorating might want to remember, AI is 33 and in his 13th season, so it's not like we got any younger. But as much as we love Chauncey, seriously, Allen Iverson for Chauncey straight up is what this is looking like - and AI has the expiring contract. That's a winner of a move.

And like I said earlier the timing is perfect. AI doesn't have that ring, and now he's got a shot at getting it. Boston better watch out. If Iverson has the ball in Game 7 and thinks the Celtics stand between him and that ring, then it's on. Iverson's been kinda selfish at times throughout his career, but you can't doubt his competitive fire, and this isn't the first time Joe D. has traded for him (or tried to), which says something. In the end, if he's Joe Dumars' kind of player, then he's mine too.

Edit: The Nugs roll into town in March. Chauncey deserves nothing less than a roaring standing O when the time comes and I expect him to get it. One thing (of many) that I like about Detroit fans is we always show our appreciation for our former players like Chauncey and Pudge.

I don't see how this isn't a good deal. Sure, we could not reach the Finals or win it all, but what were our chances with the current team of doing either of those things anyway??

I haven't been impressed with Billups performance the last two years in the playoffs anyway. To get A.I. for basically Billups, this early in the season is a stellar move IMO. It gives time for the team to adjust and develop chemistry throughout the season as well as give the kids more PT.

We could still make another move before it's all said and done this year just to make a run for it all. Of course, I've heard talk of Prince for Al Harrington, but I'd have to see it to believe it. ;)

Stuckey in '08!!!

I agree on treating Chauncey like gold when he returns. He was the man.

As for King James....1) I posted that link already...now I know you don't read anything I write  . 2) It is a fascinating article. I really think it's still a long shot, but wow Joe D is really shooting for the stars, and I love it. If LeBron isn't playing in NY, or CLE in 2 years it will be with us. Imagine the PR skills the Stones could use with him: Bring the King to the Palace! etc, etc.
