I know the Avery topic is dead, but this is too funny not to post...

Bettman said Avery's remark offended him as a parent.

"To be perfectly honest I wouldn't want to have to explain to my 12-year-old daughter what he said," the commissioner said.

Not sure why he is complaining I am sure Crosby can handle it

OK, I'm going to be the minority voice here.

How many of you who have daughters really want the NHL to take the position that it's perfectly OK for someone speaking as a member of their orginization, in a public forum to promote the sexist notion that girls can only sleep with one guy, and after that they're "used goods", whereas guys can sleep with as many bimbos as they want, and it's all just boys having fun?

The suspension was a bit much. A fine would have sufficed. The league needed to let its female fans know that they value us and our daughters as people and do not look at us as property or trophies, and that they do not approve when their employees, speaking in public, do this and in a crude way that clearly says that he considers his ex to have been his conquest, but that he does not consider himself to have been hers.

It's a fine line, and maybe only women see it.

Worse things have been said, but the line has to be drawn somewhere.

Oh, yes, and that anger management thing was BS.

yes, however in the "real world" I think girls and women understand that Avery is an ass and is not a representation of entire male population or NHL for that matter...

That just got me thinking back to when Gretzky was playing for the Blues and the glass section fell on his wife... and he could give two s***s.. he should have been suspended for lack of caring about his wifes wellbeing. I do understand what you are saying though, i just think that betty and co. handled it poorly.

Had the suspension not been brough out, nothing more than a simple quote in the small corner of the news section is all this would have been. Instead they focused on it and over blew it and now the whole world knows about sloppy seconds.

Does this mean that every decision Bettman has made has been made from the standpoint of a 12 year old?

Hey who knows, maybe when she turns 18 she'll start dating a veteran Sean Avery just to spite daddy? :P

There ain't nothin' like banging the boss's daughter!

Avery's latest comment was nothing more than trash talking. How many times has that line been said after someone has stolen someone's girl friend? Give me a break. Avery should have known he would've been gone the next time he opened his mouth. Ever since last season in the playoffs he has been in Bettman's crosshairs.

I totally agree that a line has to be drawn somewhere regarding this, but sloppy seconds is a little too early to draw the line I think, there is plenty worse that can be said.

And, as much as it is silly to get overhyped over "sloppy seconds" when much worse can be said, I still do understand how it could be offensive to parents or degrading of women.

You know what offends me? Everything that comes out of that man's mouth is a blatant lie!!! What does he think we are a bunch of retards riding the short-bus?

Listening to him talk about expansion, while 10 or more teams are losing money in this salary cap era, in such hockey towns as Las Vagas and Kansas City offends me!!

Listening to him speak of "growing the game" offends me!!

Seeing his picture offends me!!!

Hearing him talk offends me!!

Seeing where the game was in the early 1990s and then seeing where it is now, after he took over, offends me!!

Bettman not being fired offends me!!!

Seeing as the fans are a big part of the game, why can't the commissioner be voted in by fans and owners? The owners can be like congress, and the fans can cast their ballots every say 4 years after several debates.

Of course the fans should meet certain standards to be able to vote. You all can laugh, but I think it would make things interesting and bring the league much needed exposure. The NHL could be known as a fans league which may do wonders

Well said, and props to you for saying it.

I actually agree with the intent of Bettmans arguement here. You can't say things like "sloppy seconds" on the air. Bettman was very reasonable on the interview i saw when the reporter asked if it would have been ok for avery to say it on the ice, he replied, "if Avery would have said it on the ice, then you and I are not having this discussion."

Exactly! That sort of thing belongs on the ice. I'd go as far as to say it's part of the game. The whole point of trash talk is to get the other guy off his game. Guy to guy I have no problem with it. I actually kind of get it, as well as a girl can, anyway.

There are guys that think that women are conveniently mobile vaginas, and there are men who love and respect their wives/daughters/girlfriends/sisters/grandmas....women in their lives.

If there weren't men who actually loved the women in their lives, trash talk wouldn't work. If the general response to "Hey, a$$hole- I fu(ked your sister" was "Splendid! I've had occasion with her myself! Flexible little thing, isn't she? Those years in gymnastics paid off!" no one would bother. They'd just insult each other's cars.

What makes it work is that it is offensive to the person to whom it is being said. It is intended to be offensive. It is purposely offensive.

And that's fine on the ice, or in the locker room if a guy is trying to impress the other guys.

Time and place. That's the issue here. He chose to degrade women (his exes, and, by extention, any woman who has had more than one man) by insinuating that it makes a woman less worthy to have gone on to another man, whereas he could have as many women as he wanted. That women were property or playthings of which one transferred ownership.

That kind of thing belongs in private conversation, not aired out to the public.

As I said before, the suspension was a bit much. A fine would have done the job. Women would have been placated; believing that the league did not hold to the belief that it was ok to degrade women, and life would have gone on without the uproar. And we wouldn't be having this conversation.

:siren: on the last two posts. When competitive juices flow especially in sports, you're going to yap more toward the other people. Sometimes it spills in the locker room, sometimes it'll spill into media. Stuff that is yapped about on the playing surface usually just stays there, unfortunately if stuff is yapped about in the locker room or media that might suggest even an inkling of controversy, 9 times out of 10 the media will overdramatize the situation to get readers or listeners, whether the controversy is obvious or miniscule.

And on a side note, while I don't really join in the ZOMG BETTMAN IS AN IDIOT hate, he does kinda looks like Mr. Bean. :P

Bettman looks like a pedophile

I do think if there was ever a cockroach that turned into a human...a paedophile human...it would look like Bettman. He always reminds me of one the way he scuttles around arenas, and just how damn creepy he looks.

He looks like the type of thing you'd be scared was hiding under your bed as a child.
