Ovechkin CHEAP SHOT

I am not vastly underrating players.. Im saying that maybe these suspensions seem to have a double standard because of the impact on the team.. Im saying that suspending Pronger for 5 Games is probably going to have more of an effect on his team than suspending Simon for an entire season..

I know guys like McCarty, Draper and Maltby have value on our team but what do you think would effect our team more.. Maltby getting a 30 game suspension or Datsyuk or Lidstrom getting a 5 game suspension?

Are you saying it is OK to have a double-standard?

It shouldn't matter how he feels. If it was a dirty hit, there should be a suspension.

This is similar to the stuff Ryan Hollweg always gets suspended for. It will be interesting to see whether the league upholds its double standard as shown by Chris Pronger last year, when he tried to step on someone.

There's definitely a double standard, but this hit isn't like the stuff I've seen Hollweg do.

I couldn't find good video clips except this one, where Hollweg clearly hits the guy in the numbers and shoves him headfirst into the boards. The best replay comes at the 1:26 mark.

Im not saying it is OK to have a double-standard but their most obviously is a double standard and I am simply defending the logic behind it..

Double standard = discrimination!

White Vs Colored

or

Star Vs Role player

or

Celeb Drunk driver Vs You/I drunk driver

or

Bank going bankrupt Vs You/I going bankrupt

Either way you are providing something to one group that you are not providing to another simply based on who they are. Not what they have done in this particular situation.

I did not need a definition.. I know that a double standard is discrimination in a way.. even if I dont think in this case its quite 'White Vs Colored".. Nor can I defend that kind of discrimination.. But I am saying in some cases there is logic and there are reasons behind double standards.. Right or Wrong.. everyone is going to have their own opinion..

I don't see anything wrong with the replay. I watched in slow motion and at high speed, and it looked like Heward was losing his balance and Ovechkin caught him as he was going on. As others have said, unfortunate, yes, but not intentional.

Ovechkin throws hits ALL THE TIME and he never dishes out the intentional back-breakers.

Cheap shot? No way. Dirty even? Not quite. Unfortunate? Yes. Everyone needs to be careful but it's an intense games and things happen. There was nothing malicious whatsoever about that hit...just an awkward play with an unfortunate ending.

Heward lost his balance because of ovechkin

Ovechkin was following the puck around the boards on the forecheck as it had been fired around by Smith or whoever was in net for the Bolts. He came up on Heward and began to throw a hip check into him. At the very same moment, Heward bent over and backhanded the puck around the back of the net while trying to get out of the path of the hit.

Watch the first video you posted again; it's pretty clear from that angle.

With Heward bending over and leaning his upper body into Ovechkin's hit, it puts him in a very awkward position where he takes the majority of the force on his head and neck.

Ovechkin could be argued for a minor or even a double minor in that instance. But nothing about that hit was suspension-worthy.

Heward made a mistake, exposed himself, Ovechkin hit him (clean hit) and Howard got injured. No big deal, there will be no suspension for Ovechkin, and rightfully so.

Yeah, that reminds me of the hit Ruutu gave to Jagr.

Jaromir also made a mistake, perfectly clean hit.

Exactly. Screaming "cheap shot" (in all caps) in the title of the thread is totally misguided. Ovechkin did nothing wrong. Just an unfortunate accident.

Agreed. The fact that this thread is 8 pages long is insane. Definitely not a CHEAP SHOT like the title says.

This has already been discussed, mods didn't feel a need to change it, get over it

Thsi is why i made a deal out of this, what if the league would just suspend a star player for a borderline hit for once, i can tell you this is the first tme a star player had elbowed soemone from behind all season.

what about a "star" player punching someone in the balls?

Equally bad, Vlabik stated in an interview that he didn't even feel it and thought it was really retarded and un called for, but in this one Ovechkin actually injures the guy, but it wasn't intentional

equally bad?

cindy intentionally meant to hurt someone it looks like here, and it's equally bad?

o shouldn't get a suspension here. he made the move to NOT hit him once he noticed it wasn't going to be clean. he did care about his f***up.

that is where this hit is nowhere near the same as other toolbags who do this, generally speaking.

so at what point is intentionally/no injury vs. non-intentional/injury equal? it isn't.

but yea, o's hit, as viewed by me, it seems like he did try to avoid doing damage here. not to mention the way heward led up to the boards, he didn't pull out as usual, and o couldn't stop the main hit, but did a damn good job to keep it from a neck injury.
