Great win, surprisingly strong on such quick turnaround. The defensive discipline was excellent and Ty Conklin played a very good game. Loved Hossa and Conks sticking it to the Pens fans with the goal and the shutout.

I haven't read through the thread, but I trust we all were quick to point out how Wings-friendly the commentary on NBC was today, right? Today was an absolute slobber-fest by the NBC crew about the Wings and what a great organization they are, Z shutting down Crosby, blah, blah, blah. And I just KNOW that we're not only sensitive when the coverage focuses on the other team, so I'm positive this was heavily discussed....

ditto on that one. I was thoroughly disgusted at the onesideness of this coverage
and how Emrick and Tool were badly trying to sell those Penguins and try not to
mention Wings. I'm not even sure my joy of seing Wings winning in that good style
equals my joy of imagining Pi-erre eating this s*t.

the highlight reel of NBC love to Penguis was them mentioning how Pittsburgh almost
won the cup without a single word that the team they were actually playing this
game against was the one which took the prize home. it's just... so low...

You know the old saying, he who laughs last laughs best??? Well, I think we had a real chuckle fest. Talk about putting the screws to them...their ex-goalie throws a shutout, and their best ex-player scores on them. Not to mention that one of the best in the League hits them up for two, and is now 10 points away from 500 career points. How much better can it get?

I'm with y'all on the Crosby overload. I swear if we'd had a Sidney Crosby drinking contest, I would have been under the table before the pregame bulls*** was over and done with. One lousy shot - this is hockey's golden boy???

As far as Sid the wonder slug, you got schooled. Class dismissed. Suck it up and go home.

I feel you're greatly underestimating. The Pens last year were a solid team, but the Wings were "the" team.

I am not underestimating right now. I know they were a solid team last year but last year is last year and this year is this year.

As we see, the playoff time is coming soon and even though Gonchar is back on the Pens, by the long injury, I don't think he will be able to perform well as last season.

What I am saying is Gonchar backs, but if the Penguins offenses cannot provide any defensive plays this season, they will not go far in the playoff or even head to the golf course on April 4th.

This looked like the SCF team from last year. I know it's only Pittsburgh and they're pretty much horrible, but we shut down Malkin and Crosby which isn't all that easy.
I'm sure Malkin must have had a 47-game point streak or something coming into this game.

Our PK was flawless, Lilja and Rafalski were amazing. Lidstrom was Norris' Nick again. Kronwall wasn't bad. Cheli skated faster than I've seen him do in 10 years.
Leino looks like he's on his 5th NHL-season, what a smart hockeyplayer he is. Filppula had a good game again, putting him on the 2nd line has really upped his confidence it seems.

Conks played great, he was very calm and good at controlling rebounds. Datsyuk and Hossa each scored a great goal.

Only thing that looked truly bad was our PP, but so what. Great effort today, I'm sure Babs is pleased.

Pretty much huh? Well yeah our offenses were not as good as YESTERDAY, but who cares, our offenses can be fabulous in anytime and we score 3 goals today and that is enough.

I was impressed with Lilja and Conks again. Solid defensive game is what we want to watch. Even though the Pens is bad right now, shutout is special still and we did shutdown Malkin and Cindy very well.

Well aside from frustrations with finding a decent internet feed and conspiring to miss all 3 goals ranting.gif a VERY satisfactory afternoon.

A 3-0 win on the road is always pleasing at the best of times. To do it against a team that somehow considers you a "rival" is better. To shut down their 2 media-appointed-saints-from-heaven is better. To have your top forward doing the shutting down and then banging home 2 goals to boot is better. To do it whilst listening to the unending Crosby circle-jerk is better ( I could hear it through the Russian commentary!). To see Crosby constantly losing his cool and acting like a spoiled little ***** is better. To do it despite the one-eyed reffing is better.

All in all, probably the most satisfying Wings performance of the season. The 1st period against Edmonton yesterday was probly the most dominant, but on the road, back-to-back, against probably the most hated team, and certainly the most hated player on LGW, to see a glimpse of the 07-08 Wings again was a thing of beauty.

Now, we've had several false dawns this season, only to revert back to opening night form, hopefully the last 2 games are the start of Detroit consistantly playing like they should.

Oh, and anyone else think Datsyuk has just leapfrogged Malkin into 2nd place in Hart Trophy voting?
"If I can be totally honest, it's not a lot of guys you get impressed by. Actually, it's no one else but him. From the bench, to see what move he makes -- you're like, 'I wish I could do that.' Sometimes you sit on the bench and just think, 'wow,' and you look over to the other bench and they sit there and shake their heads, too. He has great, great skills. I'm probably not going to play with another player who has the kind of skills he has." Mikael Samuelsson on Pavel Datsyuk

Damn, for some unknown reason I thought this game started at three and on my drive home tuned in to listen to the pregame only to hear the tail end of the third. At least I was able to listen to us score a couple, but still this isn't basketball I actually enjoy following the whole game.

Also, does anyone else think Conks starting two straight on a back to back weekend is a good indicator that he's officially the starting goalie now?
God put me on earth to do a certain number of things. Right now I'm so far behind I'll never die.

pp could still use some work
we did luck out that malkin wiffed on that wide open net early on or the game could have been a bit different.

I know Pittsburgh fans tend to think of their team as god knows what but lets get the fact straight:
the only thing they achieved is reaching SCF where they were schooled in first 2 games and then got
pretty lucky to extend the series to 6 games. that's it.
rivalry? puh-lease... let them first reach playoffs this season and then show they're competitive after
2-3 years. I'm not even talking about reaching ECF or SCF beacuse once the league jumps off Crosby
d* and refs stop giving them free-go they'll colapse under own overconfidence and lack of maturity
(which basically already started).

Wings rivals? let Sharks win a single playoff series with us and stay around top of the west conference.
other than them... there's no team to have rivalry with Wings as of now. which is not to say no team
can win it from us. but there's long way to go for almost all of them to be called rivals

Great game boys, glad to see the shutout by Conks. Always a pleasure to watch you stick it to the goldenboy on national TV. As the world probably knows by now the Wings didn't win, the Crosby lost.

I've watched 12 or so Pitt games this year and I'm convinced they will never win with Fleury. I've never seen nor can I remember a goalie that gives up rebounds like he does. It's like there is a trampoline in goal. If I were playing defense for Pitt I'd lose my mind. That 2nd goal by Dats was inexcusable, great athleticism to knock the rebound in but that goal was on Fleury.

I've never been an Ozzie hater but months ago I felt Conklin was playing much better on the whole, hard to argue with 6shutouts. When we play D the way we can I feel ok with whoever is in there.

...I thought the Avsfans were bad...

...didn't watch one bit of it, damn sewage back up! Anyhow, does ANYONE know where I can catch it, even after it is over? Someone, somewhere has it, I just know it! TIA

Disappointed I had to miss this game but it's awesome that we got the win. Way to stick it to your old team, Hossa and Conklin.

I keep hearing about how the Wings always turn it on in the last 30 games of the season....so far, so good.

Hey guys I just got back from the game and what a great one it was! This was the first time I've been able to see the Wings live since I live in Pittsburgh and boy was it sweet after catching s*** from Pens fans all season!! Anyway I figured a first post for a first game would make a pretty good follow up. GO WINGS!!!

It's funny, if you go to letsgopens.com they complain most of their gameday thread about the Wings getting favorable calls and they cry about how the broadcasters drool over the Wings. How can they be that blind? I missed a portion of the first period and the SECOND I turned the TV on, they had a close up of Crosby. I get so tired of seeing him, especially considering he probably isn't even the best player on that team.

As of Sunday, February 8, 2009, the Pittsburgh Penguins are:

A) One step further away from a playoff spot and

B) One step closer to firing Michel Therrien.

I think if the Pens were to fire their coach Mike Terrion (copyright Ed Olczyk) and replaced him with an NHL coach, they might end up back in the thick of things before the end of the season. Having the top two scorers in the league and missing the playoffs is inexcusable and it can't have happened before.
