Big surprise that a Force India is on pole (to me, anyways)!

Race will be on at 8 AM EDT here in the States. Enjoy the event!

The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix has changed their start time to about 5PM local time, with Bernie trying to take advantage of a good television market in Europe (where he keeps threatening to take races away from there <_< ). So, the race will start in the twilight hours and transition to night at the end of the race.

Badoer has to stop racing with ferrari, right NOW.

Alonso, Fisichella, Gene or someone with a bit more experience should come and race.. (rumor has it that alonso will be a ferrari pilot next year so maybe he won't start now but who knows, everything can happen). Badoer isn't just the right pilot to race a ferrari in the championship, he is ok testing them but that's it

It can't be F1 without a first-lap accident  Button, Hamilton, Alguersuari, and Grosjean all crashed at Le Combes after Grosjean struck Button, knocking both out. Hamilton and Alguersuari both got swept up in the incident. Fisichella lead briefly, but Kimi's Ferrari overtook him and would eventually win the race.

Most interesting thing at the end of the race was Barrichello's Brawn smoking several laps before the end. Once he took the checkered flag, the marshals directed all of the cars towards the paddock. The world feed switched to an onboard of Barrichello's Brawn looking behind him, and you can see a fire burning on his car as he goes down pit lane  Credit to Bob Varsha (commentator for SPEED's coverage of F1) for running with it ("Here's Barrichello trying to burn down the paddock." ).

Fisichella to Ferrari from Monza onward

Giancarlo Fisichella will drive for Ferrari for the rest of the 2009 Formula 1 season after being released from his contract with Force India.

The Italian, 36, is set to replace Luca Badoer as stand-in for the injured Felipe Massa for the final five races.

"It has always been an ambition," said Fisichella, who will make his Ferrari debut at the Italian Grand Prix.

Force India are yet to name a replacement for Fisichella with test driver Vitantonio Liuzzi the favourite.

Looks like those rumors of Fisi to Ferrari became true. Vitantonio Liuzzi will apparently take Fisi's seat at Monza. With Massa not returning until 2010, this will help Ferrari secure 3rd in the WCC standings, as Badoer was, quite frankly, a square wheel on the Ferrari.

And now, word comes out that Renault was being investigated by the FIA involving last year's Singapore GP in which Piquet Jr crashed and brought out the safety car, which ultimately helped Fernando Alonso to the win. There were rumors that Piquet Jr was told to crash deliberately to aid Alonso, and that the FIA will decide by the end of this week about convening the World Motor Sports Council. If Renault is found to have intentionally creating a safety car period, they could face anything from a huge financial penalty to expulsion from Formula One. And with rumors that Toyota may leave F1 at the end of this season if they don't get a win, it means that potentially 4 manufacturers would leave F1 for one reason or another (Honda at the end of '08 and BMW).

Interesting times this season. Not all for good reasons, though <_<

Renault summoned by FIA's World Motor Sports Council

Renault has been summoned to appear before an extraordinary hearing of the FIA's World Motor Sport Council later this month to answer charges that it caused a deliberate crash in last year's Singapore GP.

The team's representatives have been asked to appear at the hearing, which takes place in Paris on September 21, to respond to claims that Nelson Piquet's crash in the night race was intentional - with the aim of helping team-mate Fernando Alonso win.

After it was revealed last weekend that the FIA was investigating the events that took place in Singapore, following the emergence of fresh evidence, the FIA confirmed on Friday that it believed there was a case to be answered.

In a statement the FIA said: "Representatives of ING Renault F1 have been requested to appear before an extraordinary meeting of the FIA World Motor Sport Council in Paris on Monday, 21 September 2009.

"The team representatives have been called to answer charges, including a breach of Article 151c of the International Sporting Code, that the team conspired with its driver, Nelson Piquet Jr, to cause a deliberate crash at the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix with the aim of causing the deployment of the safety car to the advantage of its other driver, Fernando Alonso."

This could be huge to not only this year's championship, but also last year's as well, because if the FIA decide to exclude Renault from last year's championship, there is a possibility that Massa may win the championship instead of Hamilton. I'll have to do the math for it, but it's a possibility. Of course, that depends on what punishment the FIA dishes out. They could exclude Renault from this year's championship, last year championship, or go the McLaren route, and fine the team a huge amount of cash. Anything is possible.

BTW, Article 151c is the same violation that McLaren got in the whole Spy-gate thing, so it would be interesting to see how this all plays out. Renault (the manufacturer) could walk away from F1, leaving the F1 team management hanging from the punishment. Flavio should be very nervous right about now.

Lotus Granted 13th Entry

The Lotus F1 team has been awarded the 13th entry in the 2010 Formula 1 championship, the governing body announced on Tuesday.

The FIA said it had also received an "impressive" application from the BMW Sauber team, but given the uncertainty about the ownership of the Hinwil squad the governing body decided to give the entry to Lotus.

BMW was, however, given the "14th place" in case any vacancy arises on the 2010 grid.

The governing body added the it will look into expanding the grid to 14 teams, "consulting urgently with the existing teams regarding the introduction of an appropriate rule change to expand the grid to 28 cars in time for the first Grand Prix in 2010."

This Lotus F1 Team has nothing to do with the original Team Lotus that raced in F1 until 1994. Lotus, as a car manufacturer, is owned by Proton, a Malaysian car maker. The Team Lotus name is owned by David Hunt (brother of the late James Hunt), and a Classic Team Lotus is owned and run by Clive Chapman, son of the late Lotus founder Colin Chapman. The sole purpose of this Lotus F1 Team is marketing for the Lotus cars, nothing more.

BMW Expects Team to Race in 2010

BMW Sauber has said it fully expects to be on the Formula 1 grid in Melbourne next year after finding a buyer for the team on Tuesday.

After missing out on the 13th 2010 slot to Lotus, BMW Sauber was offered an extra 14th team place by the FIA if it was successful in securing funding for its future.

After announcing that Swiss foundation Qadbak Investments Limited is to buy the team, BMW Sauber issued a statement confirming that it now expects the FIA to guarantee its place on the grid.

The FIA is going to try to expand the grid to 28 cars (up from 26 with the new teams entered) to accommodate the Sauber team. It is possible that one team drop out at the end of 2009 (Toyota? Renault with the recent scandal?), and that the grid will remain at 26 cars/13 teams.

I missed the race, see Webber had an accident. Normally his engine gives up the ghost, rare that he has an accident. What exactly happened and was it his fault? Unfortunately he's struggled over the past few races.

Webber got spun off the nose of Robert Kubica coming out of the della Roggia chicane (the second chicane) on the first lap, his car getting stuck in the gravel trap. Certainly a rare occurrence for him.

And now, BIG news concerning Renault:

Flavio Briatore, Pat Symonds out at Renault

Renault has announced that team boss Flavio Briatore and engineering chief Pat Symonds have parted company with the team and that it will "not dispute" the allegations of race-fixing when it appears before the World Motor Sport Council next week.

The team had been accused of asking driver Nelson Piquet to crash deliberately during last year's Singapore Grand Prix in order to cause a safety car period that would work to his team-mate Fernando Alonso's advantage. The Spaniard went on to win the race.

"The ING Renault F1 Team will not dispute the recent allegations made by the FIA concerning the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix," said a statement from the team.

The bold part is big. It looks like Renault will accept any punishment the FIA will hand out on the 20th. It looks like either Briatore, Symonds, or both came forward and spilled the beans about Singapore 2008. Whether those two voluntarily quit the team or "voluntarily" quit the team isn't know.

If the FIA comes down hard on Renault, either through a season ban or a huge monetary fine, it could usher the end of Renault's participation in F1 for the foreseeable future.

Renault given 2 year suspended ban

Renault has been handed a two-year suspended ban for its involvement in fixing the result of last year's Singapore Grand Prix, with Flavio Briatore and Pat Symonds receiving bans from motorsport.

Following a meeting of the FIA's World Motor Sport Council in Paris on Monday, the governing body ruled that the team was guilty of an offence of "unparalleled severity" after causing a deliberate crash in last year's Singapore event.

Although the FIA deemed that the offence was worthy of exclusion from the F1 world championship, it was decided to suspend the ban for two season because Renault admitted to its guilt - and took action against the men involved in the actions – former team principal Briatore and director of engineering Pat Symonds.

Renault is pretty much on probation until 2011, like how McLaren is on probation until the end of the year for lying to the stewards at Australia earlier this year.

The FIA has also taken tough action against Briatore and Symonds. It has been decided that for an 'unlimited period' the FIA will not sanction any event, championship, cup, trophy, challenge or series involving Briatore in any capacity – or grant any licence to a team or entity that is engaged with Briatore.

The statement added: "It also hereby instructs all officials present at FIA-sanctioned events not to permit Mr. Briatore access to any areas under the FIA's jurisdiction."

Briatore will also not be allowed to manage any drivers in F1, with the FIA stating that it will not renew any Superlicence granted to a driver who is associated with Briatore. At the moment Briatore manages Fernando Alonso, Mark Webber, Heikki Kovalainen, Romain Grosjean in F1.

An indefinite ban on any motorsport involvement for Flavio. His involvement in motorsports for now on will only be as a fan, and maybe only from his home.

Symonds faces a similar ban for a period of five years – and will not be allowed at FIA-sanctioned events.

The statement added: "In determining that such instructions should be effective for a period of five years the World Motor Sport Council has had regard: (i) to Mr. Symonds' acceptance that he took part in the conspiracy; and (ii) to his communication to the meeting of the World Motor Sport Council that it was to his "eternal regret and shame" that he participated in the conspiracy."

Piquet appologized to the WMSC for his involvement in the Singapore stunt, but was given immunity for his cooperation. The WMSC found that Alonso had no involvement in this mess, so no punishment for him. Renault did not get a fine out of this, so I guess that's a bit of a win for them.

FIA announces 19-race 2010 calendar

The FIA's World Motor Sport Council has announced a 19-race calendar for the 2010 season, confirming the return of Canada.

The governing body also confirmed South Korea will make its debut in Formula 1 next year with an October date.

Looks like a NA GP returns for the neighbors up north :) At least there's a NA round.

EDIT: Yesh, a day after I posted this, I just now realize there STILL is no French Grand Prix. Damn <_<

Kubica to drive for Renault in 2010

Renault confirmed on Wednesday that Robert Kubica will race for the team in 2010. Kubica will replace Fernando Alonso, who is to join Ferrari next year, in the French squad’s line-up. Kubica, who currently drives for BMW Sauber, took his sole Formula One victory to date at the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix and finished last season fourth in the world championship.

"I am very happy I will be joining Renault in the 2010 season,†said the Polish driver. “I feel I have a special connection with this team because in 2005 I won the World Series by Renault. This gave me the chance to test with the team in Barcelona, which led to my debut in Formula One."

"I share with Renault a strong winning mentality and feel comfortable with their friendly and open attitude. I'm highly motivated and optimistic that together we can be at the front of the grid next year and hopefully fighting for the world title."

Renault team principal, Bob Bell, added: "We are very excited to have signed Robert with the Renault F1 Team starting next season. Ever since Robert made his Grand Prix debut in 2006, he has been on our radar as one of the most naturally talented drivers of his generation and he has delivered on that promise so it's great to have secured him in one of our cars next season. Renault has high ambitions and hopes for the future of the team and we feel that Robert can play a big role in fulfilling them."

With the uncertainty surrounding what's going to happen to BMW Sauber next year, it good to see that Kubica will have a ride, one way or another.

Glock to miss Brazil Grand Prix

Toyota's Timo Glock will miss the Brazil Grand Prix after suffering a cracked vertebra during qualifying for the race in Japan.

The 27-year-old German did not compete in Suzuka, but it was thought his injuries were limited to a leg wound.

However, tests revealed he also suffered a back injury in a high-speed crash in the second qualifying session.

Japanese reserve driver Kamui Kobayashi will make his F1 debut as Glock's replacement in Sunday's race.

Ladies and gentlemen, your 2009 FIA Formula One World Driver's Champion:

jenson-button-malaysian-grand-prix-2009.jpg

And your 2009 FIA Formula One World Constructor's Champion:

3412263352_088d51567e.jpg

Jenson Button had to finish at least 11 point ahead of his nearest rival (team mate Rubens Barrichello) to claim the championship.

Brazilian Grand Prix race results:

1) Mark Webber, Red Bull-Renault

2) Robert Kubica, BMW Sauber

3) Lewis Hamilton, McLaren-Mercedes

4) Sebastian Vettel, Red Bull-Renault

5) Jenson Button, Brawn-Mercedes

6) Kimi Raikkonen, Ferrari

7) Sebastien Buemi, Toro Rosso-Ferrari

8) Rubens Barrichello, Brawn-Mercedes

9) Kamui Kobayashi, Toyota

10) Giancarlo Fisichella, Ferrari

11) Vitantonio Liuzzi, Force India-Mercedes

12) Heikki Kovalainen, McLaren-Mercedes *

13) Romain Grosjean, Renault

14) Jaime Alguersuari, Toro Rosso-Ferrari

Ret) Kazuki Nakajima, Williams-Toyota (Accident)

Ret) Nico Rosberg, Williams-Toyota (Gearbox)

Ret) Nick Heidfeld, BMW Sauber (Out of Fuel)

Ret) Adrian Sutil, Force India-Mercedes (Accident)

Ret) Jarno Trulli, Toyota (Accident)

Ret) Fernando Alonso, Renault (Accident)

* Heikki Kovalainen was given a drive through penalty (given as a 25 second time penalty as it was handed out after the race) for an unsafe pit release when his chief mechanic prematurely released Kovi when the fuel hose was still attached to the car. The hose was ripped out and spilled fuel in front of the Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen, which then ignited briefly when the fuel vapors came in contact with the exhaust. McLaren-Mercedes was also given a $50,000 fine for the unsafe pit release. Heikki originally finished 9th, but the time penalty dropped him to 12th.

Jarno Trulli was given a $10,000 fine for violating Article 151c of the FIA Sporting Code for ‘failing to leave the track as required by the marshals immediately after the incident and aggressively confronting Sutil’, per the stewards. Trulli was pushed off the road by Sutil after Mark Webber cockblocked Kimi Raikkonen in the first lap (damaging Raikkonen's front wing), causing Raikkonen to slow, which set off an accordion effect behind him. Trulli spun off, clipped Sutil (which went for a ride of it's own, taking out an innocent Fernando Alonso).

Kamui Kobayashi made his F1 debut in the Toyota subbing for Timo Glock and put in an impressive performance. Unfortunately, he kinda dampened it by knocking fellow Japanese driver Kazuki Nakajima out of the race after an over-aggressive block by Kobayashi (which he was not penalized for).

Jean Todt Elected to FIA Presidency

Jean Todt has succeeded Max Mosley as President of Formula One racing’s governing body, the FIA, after comfortably winning a vote of the FIA General Assembly in Paris on Friday. Mosley, who backed Todt’s campaign against sole opponent Ari Vatanen, had held the role since 1993.

Frenchman Todt has been involved in motorsport since 1966 and is arguably best known as the Ferrari team principal who guided Michael Schumacher to five world championships. He received 135 votes to former world rally champion Vatanen’s 49, with 12 abstentions or invalid votes, and will now serve a four-year term.

Let the howls of "Ferrari favoritism!" begin <_<
