Detroit interested in Neil?!

OTTAWA SUN: Bruce Garrioch reports the following:

-“League sources” claim the Canadiens are studying a possible acquisition of Ryan Smyth, who is apparently being shopped by the Avalanche despite Smyth’s recent claim he wouldn’t waive his movement clause…The Blues haven’t asked Keith Tkachuk to waive his NTC but could soon. He’d like to go to Boston but the feeling might not be mutual…The Oilers and Lightning might have interested in Senators defenseman Christoph Schubert. The Sens are believed interested in Oilers d-man Ladislav Smid…The Thrashers are shopping Niclas Havelid and Ron Hainsey and both could be dealt at the deadline…

The Devils have been looking at Anaheim’s Chris Pronger but are believed more interested in former Devil Scott Niedermayer…The Penguins and Canadiens might be interested in Edmonton’s Erik Cole…Contract talks between the Senators and Chris Neil apparently aren’t going anywhere as he’s believed seeking the same salary as Montreal’s Georges Laraque. The Sharks and Red Wings are believed interested and the Sens would want a second rounder in return….The Sabres could shop for scoring help if Thomas Vanek isn’t ready to return soon from a broken jaw…The Blue Jackets are interested in Canadiens winger Alex Kovalev. The Penguins aren’t as yet engaging in any talks about Kovalev….

SPECTOR’S NOTE: If Smyth doesn’t want to move there’s nothing the Avs can do about it. If he does agree to a trade I doubt he’ll go to an Eastern club…Tkachuk in my opinion will only accept a trade to a Cup contender…I don’t believe the Oilers would part with Smid for Schubert, who’s been rumored available all season…The Thrashers to my knowledge aren’t shopping Hainsey, their best puck-moving defenseman…The Devils might indeed be more interested in Niedermayer as he’s a UFA and doesn’t come with an expensive salary for next season like Pronger, but I’m guessing Lamoriello would prefer to tweak his lineup rather than make a major deadline deal…The Habs are more interested in a scoring center so I have my doubts about their rumored interest in Cole…Don’t see where Neil would be a fit with the Sharks or Wings…The Blue Jackets are seeking a scoring center not another

While I think this is just a big rumor, it would be amazing to add such an energy player like Neil. But what I don't understand is if our cap room will remain at what it is when we bring Stuart/Holmstrom off the IR. Does that cap room stay when the players are re-activated? If not, I don't see how this trade would work for Detroit. We would have to do something like a Kopecky + pick trade or something along those lines. Even just to clear a roster spot I think one of our players would have to be sent to Ottawa.

IF (big if) my trade idea goes through, the playoff lines would look something like:

Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Holmstrom

Hossa-Filppula-Franzen

Sammy-Hudler-Cleary

Neil-Draper-Maltby(Helm/Leino)

Even then this roster doesn't make much sense. Neil has the talent to be a 3rd liner. Of course, on the Wings, everyone plays a line below what they could be playing on any other team.

Kenny could pull this off since the 4th line has been lackluster this year and really needs an energy player. But I'm thinking he stays put with what he's got.

We have $1M cap space - so we can easily add him... send Lebda or Maltby + 3rd pick and that's it!!!

Could be done. Prorate his salary.

This is a good idea. As much as I've loved the Wings for not "throwing away draft picks" ala Pens last season, this year is going to be one of the Wings best chances at a cup for a long time, and Neil is a solution to just about every problem we have on the 4th line.

I could be wrong but I don't see Chris Neil coming to Detroit, his style of play isn't what the Wings really need right now. If they want that type of play they need to bring up Downey or McCarty. Right now I think all the roster spots are full as far as the team that's on the ice. I just don't see Neil fitting into Detroit right now. I've been wrong before and I may be again about this.
