GROwl 5 Report post Posted February 25, 2009 So... I got behind in reading my latest The Hockey News. However, I finally finished it last night. In it, the writers at THN made a bunch of predictions about the upcoming NHL trade deadline. Two of the guesses involved Griffins. One was Ville Leino being traded for a 2nd/3rd defense pairing for Detroit. The other was a trade involving Cory Emmerton and a draft pick for a goalie if I remember right (I passed the magazine on to a friend, so I cannot verify). The more I think about Leino, it kind of makes sense. He's still only signed for just this year. He's not happy being in the AHL, yet I can't see Detroit penning a one-way deal for next season. In the NHL games he's played in, he's shown that he can score. He's still cheap, so he could be attractive for a team who won't make the playoffs and is looking to unload a little salary. Valid trade bait? Yes, in my opinion. Though I don't like GR's playoff outlook without him. While he certainly hasn't carried the team all year, I like the Griffins better with him than without him. I don't see Emmerton as serious trade bait. He's still too young/unproven. And what about Jimmy? Detroit is notoriously hard on goalies and Jimmy has been inconsistent for almost 4 years. He's played some great hockey and he's played through some weaker periods. Especially with Osgood signed for a few more years, how willing is Detroit going to take a chance on Jimmy as a backup next year? I guess I see him more of a potential summer transaction than a trade deadline one. If any of these three (or any other Griffins you think could be trade bait) go, what are your thoughts on GR's playoff run?
pokemonbreeder18 6 Report post Posted February 25, 2009 sadly I agree....Ville is a cheap young prospect who, like Kyle Quincey, wants to play in the NHL and there is no way Detroit would sign a one way contract with him he has only been with us for a year.....if anything we could get rid of howard, but Stafford has stepped up lately and could be help down the road. GROwl 5 Report post Posted February 25, 2009 ... Stafford has stepped up lately and could be help down the road. Stafford would definitely be a lose:lose situation. He has played pretty solidly the last two years for the Griffins and the Detroit organization would get no benefit since he's a Dallas prospect. At least if Ville or Cory were traded, (in theory) we'd see the benefit with a stronger Red Wing team.
Aussie_Wing 354 Report post Posted February 25, 2009 I can't see the Wings trading Emmerton. From all reports we are very, very high on him and I'd find it extremely unlikely he moves, especially considering he's having a pretty solid rookie season.
Coyote0106 2 Report post Posted February 25, 2009 If any of these three (or any other Griffins you think could be trade bait) go, what are your thoughts on GR's playoff run? The closer we get to the trade deadline, the more worried I become. Then I refresh all these trade trackers every 15 minutes at work until it's done. I don't really expect Leino to come back down, so while he would be a very welcomed addition, I never thought of having him for the playoffs. In net, I'd feel just as comfortable (if not more) if Larsson was the starter for them, and Howard was indeed traded. We currently have 2 goalies that I am more than confident in... it almost reminds me of the good old days with Lamothe and Joey Mac. Emmerton would be a hit that the Griffs would definitely feel. We couldn't afford to lose a player like him, if we want to have any sort of run. He might not be carrying the team, but he is a valuable asset to it. We need our guys like Abs, Kindl, Ritola, Ericsson healthy and playing for us to have a run. Which reminds me, has anyone heard anything about Ericsson? It sounded pretty serious the last time I heard anything, but it's been a few weeks.

I want your job if it allows you to multi-task in such a way! 2.) Ericsson is allegedly practicing on the ice this week
