CBS Disrespects Hockey

Baseball is a sport. Basketball is a sport. Football (American and soccer) are sports. Hockey is a sport.

Just because YOU don't like it, doesn't mean you can change its definition. Grow up.

I am not a huge Baseball fan, but I am a Tigers fan. To reply to the OP, I am sure there would be an equally funny list or commercial of it's pastimes top player saying something similar about a non-popular sport in Cananda. I can see someone in Europe making fun of American Football that was when it comes to their Futball. Jeter is a Michigan man (Kalamazoo) and plays in a city that is FILLED with hockey fans, so I believe he probably was a hockey fan growing up and wouldn't say anything to piss of some New Yorkers, so CBS is the one to blame, not the player or the Sport. You forget thewy probably paid him a pretty penny just to say that too! Plus he has to promote his own sport as the best! Although we ALL know which one is really the best!

lets just leave NASCAR out of this debate!

So I'm having a lazy Saturday watching the USA/Canada game of the World Baseball Classic. If you didn't know, last Thursday team USA did the Top Ten list on Letterman via satellite. In between innings, ESPN showed a clip of the players doing the top ten. The topic was, top ten reasons to watch the WBC.

And the number one reason, delivered by Derek Jeter, was: "What else are you going to watch, hockey?"

:ranting::ranting: :ranting:

To me, this is completely unacceptable. Hockey players are the finest athletes on the planet, not to mention some of the nicest guys in the world. Look at baseball players, you sure as hell don't have to be an athlete to be able to hit a 95 mph fastball that arrives in less than half a second. I mean, baseball players spend more time scratching themselves than they do actually playing the game. That's right, I said game and not sport.

I'm calling for a boycott of CBS, Late Night with David Letterman, and all of their major sponsors. They need to learn that us hockey fans are not going to take some blatant disrespect lying down! Who's with me?!

I'm guessing Letterman was ticked and jealous because Leno had Lidstrom and Ozzie on his show. And he couldn't deal with the dissing. Took him long enough, eh?

;)

Anyhow, this is ridiculous. They're both sports whether you like it or not. I once lived in Ipswitch, England, and they don't think ANYTHING is a sport other than soccer. The only sports I ever played were soccer, baseball, and hockey...soccer takes a lot of stanima and finesse, baseball takes strength, speed, and focus, and and hockey takes a mix of all of those. So sure lots of baseball players couldn't play hockey, but lots of hockey players couldn't throw a strike (much less at 90 mph with movement on it). So stop arguing about what's a sport and what isn't. The bottom line is, jokes are just that...jokes. I'll tell you what was disrespectful...American rich-folks creating NFL Europe and stuffing it down their throats, because they were just so positive it would dominate like it does here...that was cocky and ignorant, and that's why it tanked.

Some of the people in this thread really need to think for even just a few moments before posting the garbage you do.

First off:It's a joke, this is is an absurd reaction to a very harmless remark. It's actually quite remarkable how little it takes to set people into a hissy fit.

Why yes ... yes it is.

Hmmmmmm ....

Is it possible, perhaps, maybe, that the OP's response seems so absurd because ... it's also a joke?

Which would make all of the outraged replies equally absurd? Ahhh, the irony ...

That's a great point...and I actually hope so, because at this point (if he was serious), it's gone over like a lead balloon. I would hate to try to start a movement and get three pages full of comments that equate to "Go **** yourself." If that were me, I might never post here again.

At least you're open minded.

This is such a dumb argument. So, does hockey suck, because it isn't played in South America or Asia? That isn't fair at all. I understand that you don't personally like baseball, but there are people out there that don't like hockey. And I'm assuming that it probably annoys you when someone is so ignorant about hockey, but you're doing the same thing with baseball!

Im very open minded...but when I turn on ESPN America (the nhl etc. channel here) to watch a wings game only to have the start delayed by about 30 mins cos some stupid people decided to make their boring game of baseball extra boring by making it really long and Im missing potential Downey time for it then Im likely to hate it. Nothing gets in the way o Downey time.

And people how are ignorant about hockey dont annoy me. Their loss.

You, sir, must not have had to sit through a curling match.

I actually quite enjoyed watching curling this one time cos the UK won gold...think it was in the Commonwealth Games...so we beat Doggy's ass

Or the lovely british sport of Cricket :P

How dare...cricket is a damn underrated sport! If its a sport Im actually good at then its a good sport damnit!

This stuff absolutely drives me freaking nuts, you have no idea. Same with the Tiger Woods hockey comment last year during the finals.

Kind of funny how during the NFL and NBA off seasons, many of those players are going to court and jail for beating their girlfriends, weapons charges, drug charges, etc... while the Red Wings are spending their time at Children's Hospital with the Stanley Cup.

Pisses me off how people are obsessed with these other athletes when hockey players are true gentlemen and good people. Maybe it's because they're not all flashy and in the news for negative things....?

Since I broadcast baseball for a living, I'm probably a little biased...but I hate it when hockey fans, of all people, decide to dismiss and belittle another sport...and then turn right around and criticize people for not giving hockey a chance.

I love hockey and baseball. They're completely different sports, obviously, which is why I like them both. Baseball has all kinds of subtleties and complexities and nuances, just like hockey. And trust me, you couldn't play it at a high level. It's incredibly hard. If you don't like it, fine. But dismissing baseball and then whining about most people's closemindedness toward hockey is just asinine.

I feel that way about football. "Lets play 16 games in a season and make everything based on pre-set plays. Lets run most of the clock off when nothing is even happening and get millions of people to watch pretending that field goals and running the clock doesn't determine most games." Gotta be Rupert Murdoch's fault.

I'd give you points if you actually got the phrase right. It's "America's past time". Not "pass time".

Actually if you're going to correct someone you should probably know the phrase yourself. It's "pastime." One word only. Just sayin'.

I do know the phrase, TYVM. However my spellchecker in Firefox automatically changed it since for some reason it didn't recognize it as a word. I have since added the word to the dictionary so that God forbid this happens again, my browser won't go stupid on me.

It was just a joke, don't see the need to be offended. Thats like McCarty getting offended when Yzerman said he has a better chance of winning the lottery, than D Mac has of getting a hat trick!

Maybe instead of the All-star game being East vs West, we could have NHL stars vs MLB stars. Now that would be worth watching! Introduce new fans to the game, good comedy, and it could be televised on a regular network.

Hmm...

Better yet...

MLB, NHL, NBA, and NFL allstars play each other in the other sports (ie NHL plays MBL in football and basketball, NBA in football and baseball, and NFL in basketball and baseball). Have the games during times when it won't interfere with regular schedules (tricky, I know- might have to omit playoff team members from participating in some games to accomodate overlapping seasons). Proceeds go to charity.

You gotta admit, the hockey games would be a laugh and a half.

It might be fun as a one time thing. Compile the standings. Ties broken by a tiddlywink-off. Winners get a new set of golf clubs and a bowling ball.

Shut me up now.

Well, I don't watch any of their shows, news, or sports presentations already so I guess you could say I was preemptively boycotting CBS!
