Would the Wings be better off had they Pursued Goalie Instead of Hossa

The better question might be, do we not sign Hossa or Franzen to long-term deals in the offseason because we will need to address the goaltending situation??

Now that is more appropriate question. I don't know though. We know Osgood CAN play well so do they try and get a goalie? The only one I would consider would be Khabibulin but what's he gonna want? If it's an ok price for a guy whos 36 then fine. Other than that Fernandez, Nittymaki or Biron are the next best but are they really better?

But even when the defense is not playing up to par, thats where the Goalie comes into play. I'm not saying Ozzie has got to be a hero every game, but trying to remember I don't recall once this season where he has literally won us the game, and not having our offense scoring 4+ goals.

I agree the goalie needs to step up when the defense breaks down but the defense has played like crap way too often this season. And it's not like it's just a handful of times. How many times were there missed assignments Saturday night alone? The third goal and 5th goals were completely Rafalski’s fault and a shorthanded breakaway to one of the best goal scorers in the league. The stupid mistakes made me want to puke.

Yeah. Like I said, and others have, it's easy to look back now and say maybe they should have gotten a goalie but lets also be realistic with it. who would they have gotten? Huet? Would he be so much better when the Wings have just stopped playing defense? The other night it was blown coverage after blown coverage. There wasn't much Osgood could have done.

It's a good question, and one that will be answered come playoff time. If one of the goalies plays well, I'd say no. But if we bust this postseason, and one of the major reason's is the goaltending I can see us going after a veteran goaltender.

We are also very very deep on goaltending prospects, that's why I don't see us signing a breakout young goaltender, and if we do go after a goalie it will be a proven 30+ year old goaltender in my opinion.

This thread is possibly the biggest waste thread I've ever seen on these forums. Or maybe my memory is just really bad. But sheesh.

In any event, I probably should have taken note of the fact that the OP was a Pens fan before I decided whether or not to post. Had I, I'd surely have decided not to respond, as I'd have realized that the dude only started this thread to troll. When people quite understandably responded to this with hostility, he replied to them with some of the most inane "argument" (if it may be called that) I have seen in a looong while; somehow he expected all present to simply take for granted that everything he was saying was true, having, as he did, rendered it in the guise of "fact" (when in reality it was flagrantly obvious to everyone that this "fact" was anything but).

I will give him credit for being somewhat entertaining, though.

Whatever, God forbid someone speculate on a scenario that would have probably been more sucessful. Admin I would be very Happy if you could ban me. The Arrogance and Homerism and the instigating of some of these posters is just to much. I am gonna laugh my ass off when the Wings due to being one of the slowest teams in the league get swept in the first round to Nashville or CBJ LOL What great Hockey towns those are!!!!! MONSTER NASH!!!!!!!!!!

You came to a Red Wings board and didn't expect Red Wings fans to defend their team?

To be honest, those are the two teams that I am the most worried about, come playoffs.

Much better question, I would prefer to try and get Hossa for around 6 and let Franzen walk, that way we can keep Hudler, pay Leino his money and throw a little extra at a goalie.

Once again a Pens fan ruined when he comes a trolling, now the Wings are slow. What's next we are old? I mean come on now, in his opening topic he talks about the need for a goalie, which insinuates that is the major problem with the wings not speed. Then whats the excuse for the "slow" wings beating the s*** out of his fast young Pens. Besides before talking about 1st exists maybe your team should make the playoffs.

Me too. I was thinking that last night. I could for sure see the Blue Jackets being one of those teams that can cause trouble.

I agree as well, and it's not because I think either are a better team than the Wings, but because in my opinion they have something the Wings are lacking right now, and that's hunger. The problem with the Wings' isn't their skill, the goaltending, or anything tangible. They simply seem lathergic out there. If they don't have the hunger to beat other teams and the drive for the cup they will get beat every time by teams who want to win more. Call it cup hangover or whatever, but Hossa seems like the only one giving it his all night in and night out.

Don't post things like this and not expect "arrogance" and "homerism" in the responses. Some of us on this thread have actually replied to your original post respectfully and with our opinions - but you haven't responded to a single post like that. You posted this thread looking for a fight.. it's all too obvious. Don't call it "homerism" when we defend our team. Don't call it "arrogance" when we state, as a matter of plain fact, that we're one of the best teams in the league. And don't insult our team as if we have no idea what's going on. We're not idiots - we love our team.. otherwise, we wouldn't spend our time talking about them on an internet forum. You don't have to like our team. You don't even have to respect our team. But you certainly can respect the fans enough to not post threads for the sole purpose of getting them riled up.

You know, this wouldn't be a bad idea at all.... right now the Wings are the best offensive team in the league, did we really need to add Hossa? No, we were very strong in that department before. Does a GM turn away from signing a player like Hossa at the price we got him? No.

However, heading into this season if a person were to look at the Wings and point out a flaw it would've definitely been goaltending. We had the lowest shots against and goals against and that was attributed to the great defense we had last season. Hasek and Osgood were a very good tandem last and were there when need by (which wasn't very often).

This season we are sitting guys like Helm and Leino who would be LOVED on probably all 29 of the other teams, so I definitely think we could've made a push for a solid goalie with the depth we had up front. Conklin was a good signing and I think we should ride him for the rest of the year but the guy has never been the number one guy except by default. He has definitely improved since Edmonton but it's a little unnerving going into the playoffs with such an untested goalie.

I think we've all come to the conclusion at this point that the OP is either not overly intelligent or is being gigantically facetious for some reason.

 Perfect. Just Perfect

Since you're a Pens fan, I'm going to try to make this simple enough for you to understand.

Ozzie dominated the playoffs last year and he dominated your team. The last thing anyone expected was for him to be this bad this season. Last year it looked like he reinvented himself and there was no reason for this team to pursue another starting goalie, which is why the Wings signed Conklin instead for backup duties.

Get over the fact that Hossa didn't want to play in s***tsburgh. It was basically a one-night stand, just like his stay in Detroit will likely be. I hope I don't act the same way as Pens fans do when he's gone.
