Does anyone know what the League Champion Banners are for? They don't correspond to Stanley Cup years but are from the same period as the Cups of the 50's. In the photo they are just to the right of Howe's #9 and are fairly indecipherable. Anyone who has been to the Joe would know what I'm talking about.

Can't see the picture, but could they be for winning President's Trophies? What are the dates?

Just found it, it's for the President's Trophy before there was such a thing ... from Wikipedia

"The trophy was introduced at the start of the 1985–86 NHL season by the league's Board of Governors. Prior to this, the best team in the league during the regular season was allowed to hang a banner stating "NHL League Champions"."

Is there anything Wikipedia doesn't know?
