Is Franzen worth 4 Mill?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

I've been looking at salaries in the NHL and I really dont belive that this cat will end up getting the 4 million dollar pay cheque. I know very little about paying hockey players but there are a couple hand fulls of guys out there that have been around longer than Mule and at just as proven, getting 2-3 mill. That is where I think he should be signed at. A small 2-3 year deal @ 2-3 mill and if he plays great give him his 4 later. But I stress again I dont know anything about this, just looking at numbers.

He'll could get that when Staal in Pit got the same. But yeah as a Red Wing he's more like a 3-3.5mil player. I'm starting to lean towards trying to get hossa signed and let Franzen walk to have that cash elsewhere.

I think he would get 4.0 on the open market if he has another good playoff run.

I agree with that for sure, if he puts a playoff run together like he did last year or even close I say give em the money. Im just not holding my breath...though I am crossing my fingers.

In a red wing uniform he's worth about 3-3.5M

At most I'd say.

For another team he could be worth 4 mil, but if that's what he wants from the Wings they could find better things (for them) to spend that money on.

If they can sign Hossa and bring up Leino for the next season they have enough scoring even if they lose Hudler and Franzen.

Spend the Franzen money on a starting goalie they can rely on.

With that said, I'd hate to see Franzen go. He's a bit inconsistant, but when he's on he's almost unstoppable.

The thing is that most guys who are mostly goal scorers are this way. They go in streaks. You just have to hope that their goalless streak is short and that not everyone is on a bad streak at the same time.

We only have so much money and I'd much rather see us re-sign Hossa and Hudler and have a little bit of wiggle room for a deadline deal, or call-ups without having to LTIR someone... I hate them being right up against the cap all year...

It's a blessing and a curse.

Franzen is 100% a bonafide $4 mil player.

Everybody is always clamoring for that big, strong power forward type. Well guess what, that's what Franzen is. He just isn't overly physical and doesn't fight.

You take his great size at prolly 220lbs, above average skating ability for a big man, great hands, especially in tight, an accurate wrist shot, stands in front of the net, excellent at tipping pucks, can pass the puck, dangle enough to get people to miss, doesn't take stupid penalties....AND, he works hard on the backcheck, plays strong D and kills penalties to go along with being a legit 25-30+ goal man. He's worth every penny of 4 million.

You see it in this thread with the figures people are throwing out at 3-3.5 mil. We all KNOW that is a hometown discount. From that it's easy to do the math that another 500K or 1 mil is nothing for him to get on the open market. He'll get it and maybe then some if we can't re sign him.

He's become quite the diamond in the rough. I just hope we don't lose him. And yes, would rather have Hossa but Franzen is a fantastic player.

I think so.

Hell, the Wings think Cleary is worth 2.8 million per. I don't see how they could justify Franzen being worth the same. It'd be great if they locked him up to a similar contract though.

EDIT: By that, I mean that in the Wings' eyes Franzen has to be worth more.

I think that Cleary is HIGHLY overpaid and 2.8 would be spent waaay better else where. I love Franzen and if he repeats his playoff performance  However when its all said and done I would rather sign hossa at 6 point whatever then franzen at 4 if he wont take less.

Cleary is probably one of the hardest working players on the team. He may not be a Datsyuk or Zetterberg superstar, but the consistent effort he shows game in and game out is something I respect highly. While $2.8 million might be stretching it for him, he's certainly better than $1m.

As for Franzen, he could easily get $4m on the open market. He's a remarkable hockey player - he's just a tad inconsistent. I try not to make judgments on the players until the playoff run, though. As we all know, it's a completely different game once it's for the Cup.

Lets take a looksy here...(Note: All stats taken from TSN, and all cap figures from nhlnumbers.com)

Johan Franzen-Age 29

Franzen Last Season

72GP 27G 11A 38P +12 13.57% Shooting...Post Season: 16GP 13G 5S 18P +13 18.57% Shooting

Franzen This Season:

56GP 27G 16A 43P +11 14.67% Shooting...Projected Stats: 71GP 34G 20A 54P +11 14.59% shooting

Niklas Hagman: Signed Contract at Age 28

Season before contract (2007-08)

82GP 27G 14A 41P +4 15.17% shooting

Left Dallas and Signed with Toronto at 3 million per year for 3 years...(Franzen is worth more than him statistically)

Ryan Malone: Signed Contract at Age 28

Season before contract (2007-08)

77GP 27G 24A 51P +14 16.98% shooting

Left Pittsburgh and Signed with Tampa Bay at 4.5 million per year on average for 7 years (They are mostly equivalent statistically)

J.P. Dumont: Signed contract at Age 30

Season before contract (2007-2008)

80GP 29G 43A 72P +5 15.10% Shooting

Re-signed with Nashville for 4 million per year over 4 years (greater statistically than Franzen since he also gets assists)

Now I know these are all different style players in different situations but one can argue he is worth more than the 3 million of Hagman, less the player who signed a home-town discount in Nashville (dumont) at 4 million but then again more than the grossly overpaid ryan malone...

Thus it is a confusing process...I think that Franzen can site Malone as what he wants more than on the open market, but Holland can state that Dumont has superior stats and took a home town discount of 4...thus Holland can ask him to take less than 4 million...

I see Franz making no more than 4 million but no less than 3.5 million if he stays in detroit...

If he goes open market Johan Franzen will make at least 5 million dollars...

Ya I have to agree with this statement 100%. In fact I would even go on a limb to say Franzen is closer to the 3M range in a Red Wings uniform. I also think Flip at 3M is a bit much, but who knows.

He probably is ... but I'd rather put another 4 million on that and keep Hossa here for a long term with a cap hit approx 7...

Again, I agree with statement 100%. We NEED to resign Hossa -- that would lock up Zetterberg, Dats, Hossa and Rafalski all for a good while. With Lids surely resigning at yet another discounted price (this is me assuming of course) I would say that the foundation is set in stone for the next 4-5 years. If you can't build a winning team around guys like Z, Dats, Hossa, Rafalski and Lids then you are in some trouble.

Great post. I love numbers and you lay it out there with these comparisons and analysis. I wish more people actually used numbers in backing up their claims, it is quite rare around here and it was refreshing as hell to see someone buck that trend. Good job for sure.

Well he better be over the top through the first round cuz the way our goaltending and defence play that's probably as far as we'll get!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Mule is worth $4M to the Wings... his Cap Number will come down if they offer a monster terms. I'm thinking $20M over 5 years but stretched to 6 years, structured heavily front-loaded ala Z, Cap hit of 3.3 per.

Hossa should get double Mule's offer at the same term length; $40M over 6 frontloaded, cap hit of 6.7 per.

Datsyuk's cap hit is the new ceiling for this team (after next season).

I think Franzen is definitely a 4 mil a year player. However, I think you are going to see teams try to get away from offering guys like Franzen more than they deserve (seeing as Franzen has missed games here and there over the past couple years) due to the economy and the fact the cap is going to go down a little (or so I've heard/read).

The Detroit Red Wings have two major unrestricted free agents, Johan Franzen and Marian Hossa, to sign, and Detroit GM Ken Holland says "We are now debating internally how many long-term deals do we want."

Based on that comment I speculate that Mule and Hoss really want to re-sign; are willing to work it so that they can both stay along with a few other cost-friendly players like Kopy; and now Kenny and his staff have to decide whether or not they're willing to finalize it all.

In other words, they have some ideas and contract numbers in place in which both sides agree. As of today, it's just a matter of whether or not Kenny and Co. want to lock up that much money in long-term contracts.

If so, then that's good news. Not really fresh news, but good news nonetheless. Sorry it took as many words for me to explain that idea.

Thats my one concern. We already have #40 locked up until he's 40 at 6 mil/ year. I think if the Wings throw out another long term deal to either Franz or especially Hossa, it might come back and bite them down the road and jeopardize future signings.

I would take Franz at 4 mil for 3-5 years
