sjradio 0 Report post Posted March 28, 2009 Well, we may have lost Ryan Oulahed for a very very long time. During the second period of the Griffins game at Norfolk, Oulahen had his leg buckle under him when his skate caught a groove in the ice. Preliminary reports said he might have dislocated his hip, but the coach of Norfolk and former Griffin Darren Rumble said that he received new that Oulahen's left femur snapped and a portion of the broken bone came through the skin of his thigh inside his hockey shorts. This according to the Norfolk paper.
GROwl 5 Report post Posted March 28, 2009 Sounds like a pretty brutal game. The AHL reported the following story: Referee Cozzan injured in Norfolk 03/27/2009 10:00 PM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Last updated Fri Mar 27, 11:00 p.m. EDT -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SPRINGFIELD, Mass. ... American Hockey League referee Chris Cozzan was injured during Friday evening's game between the Norfolk Admirals and the Grand Rapids Griffins at Norfolk's Scope Arena. With 5:34 remaining in the first period, Cozzan was accidentally cut in the neck by a player's skate blade. He was immediately tended to by emergency medical personnel and team trainers and doctors, and was transported to Norfolk General Hospital to undergo surgery to repair the injury. Cozzan is expected to make a full recovery. No other details are available at this time. The GR Press said that the teams ended the 1st period at that time and then tacked on the additional 5:34 to the second period.

GROwl 5 Report post Posted March 29, 2009 (edited) Update... Just before the game started tonight, Kaser talked about the injuries to Oulahen and the Referee. He also interviewed Griffins Trainer Rob Schnitzer who was on the ice for Oulahen's. Ryan has a dislocated hip and went off on a stretcher. It was re-adjusted back into place. He was released from the hospital and was able to fly back to GR today. He is on crutches but isn't able to put any weight on the hip. Almost certainly season-ending, but he will be examined by the doctors here. The referee's neck was lacerated pretty deeply. However, the cut missed the jugular. He was given a tranfusion while still on the ice/at the arena before being taken to the Norfolk hospital. He is expected to be released from the hospital in the next day or two and to make a full recovery. Griffins in really bad shape injury-wise. McCarty bruised/sore and not playing tonight. Sounds like Downey has not re-joined the team as was expected. Tardiff, Ritola still out. I just noticed on the roster that GR is playing with 8 defensemen tonight and 10 forwards. I don't know which two D are actually playing up front. Edited March 29, 2009 by GROwl

Ritola not sure if hes out for the rest of the year or not, Tardif? I think Downey, DMac and Ville have all been upgraded to day-to-day. Ritola is likely 3-4 more weeks and Tardif 1 week or two. This according to the Norfolk paper. Wow that sounds absolutely horrific. He was having a fine season too. We will really miss him in the playoffs, great player and even better leader. The Griffins are in a bad way right now. So many key injuries as well as missing Ericsson and now Stafford. I get this awful feeling a great regular season will ultimately prove fruitless with an early playoff exit. Not really out fault though, just so many things going wrong. We need Ritola back ASAP. Seems like Kindl was good last night and making his pro debut Lashoff had an assist and was +1. I like hid kid.
GROwl 5 Report post Posted April 4, 2009 Did you all catch the 1st intermission interview between Kaser and Oulahen? It was actually taped on Wednesday. Ryan stopped downtown to see his teammates. He said he was totally bored sitting around on the couch. He'll be stuck on crutches for 4-6 weeks and then hopes to start rehabbing. If all goes well, he'll be in shape for training camp. That seems so far away! I also got an update from a friend on the referee whose neck was sliced the same night as Ryan's injury. He's doing okay and is expected to make a full recovery.
