KrazyGangsta 79 Report post Posted April 10, 2009 New York was advertising there ads on the glass lol, did you guys see this? Thoughts? Link To Story
Jedi 1,865 Report post Posted April 10, 2009 That's gotta be computer done. No way they'd put REAL ads there. It'd block the view of everyone in those seats, then there's no way they're selling those seats every game.
Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted April 10, 2009 This is ridiculous. If a team needs money that bad, they should set something up in a player's contract to where they would do a commercial for Subway with proceeds going to the club, or sign autographs at Subway instead. Stop bastardizing an already frail game.
heed316 7 Report post Posted April 10, 2009 Was flipping through the free center ice preview and saw that on the Rangers game tonight...was very distracting for me. Hope this doesn't become the norm...
Trapt1307 81 Report post Posted April 10, 2009 It's an MSG overlay. Here's a picture from that game: http://cache2.asset-cache.net/xc/85855707....30A760B0D811297 Pretty annoying, but I honestly don't think it would bother me all that much watching the game on TV. Gizmo 21 Report post Posted April 10, 2009 It's computer generated and likely done by the network instead of by the Rangers (though I know they're owned by the same folks in their case). Forumula One racing started doing this a number of years ago with virtual billboards along side the track where none exist. MLB teams do this though it's usually done with a green screen behind the plate.
tingnoel 4 Report post Posted April 10, 2009 At least they're only putting the ads on the glass, and not all over the jerseys like they do in Europe...

mjlegend 155 Report post Posted April 10, 2009 At least they're only putting the ads on the glass, and not all over the jerseys like they do in Europe... The day I see advertisements on an NHL jersey like they are in Europe's top hockey leagues is the day I seriously reconsider the purchase of a new jersey every few years. Subway can pay me if they want to advertise their product.

Subway can pay me if they want to advertise their product. but that's not really the whole story, they may have ads on their jerseys but at least there are no TV commercial breaks, like the Olympics. There's a better flow to the game. Hockey isn't the worst sport in America for commercials for sure but I do find it interesting that the "threat" of an ad on the jersey causes such a harsh reaction when American sports are so commercialised it's gotten rediculous. How long does it take to play the last min. of a basketball game? Many NFL games are longer than 3 hours nowadays. How about when a team kicks an extra point in football and they take a commercial and come back and have the kickoff and then take another commercial break? Hockeytown_Ryan 119 Report post Posted April 11, 2009 (edited) Was that for real??? All those ads like that...? Thats Insane...... I would be asking some bucks to wear all that Crap on my jersey..... Granted the name on the front of the jersey is more important than the name on the back But..Which one ???? Wow..... Not to mention Those guys look tired of carrying all those logos around the ice..... If that happends here.... Hockey Tickets should be FREE Let the sponsors pick up the tab! Jersey Wing 1,521 Report post Posted April 11, 2009 I watched that game and YES, it WAS a distraction and that should be the end of the discussion. It was a DISTRACTION and therefore no amount of money should allow it to stay.
NC WINGS FAN 5 Report post Posted April 11, 2009 Be ready. It's coming soon. I would not be so sure about that because then all of the teams would look the same when team branding, logos/colors are an important selling point. Identities would be lost and interest in the league would decline even more. As a die hard, I would not watch that crap, and I know I am not alone here. Like everything else, there needs to be a balance.
NC WINGS FAN 5 Report post Posted April 11, 2009 Ads, ads, and more ads!! When will people finally say enough is enough? They put ads on the jerseys, what is next? What will they change team names to corporate names? Imagine this, "You are watching Detroit Comericas Hockey presented to you by Bud Light as the Comericas take on the Chicago AIGs from the Freddie Mack Center in Detroit, home to the government owned General Motors Corporation!! In net for the Wings, oops I mean Comericas is Ty Grab Life by the Horns Conklin..." Bastardize our sports and we will quit watching!! That is why I refuse to watch MLS. Guest Shoreline Report post Posted April 11, 2009 (edited) I rarely agree with prophetic like statements like vangvace delivered but trends have shown that this will be at very least attempted. The way marketing methodology works is they start with a focus group to decide how to tailor the ads and study attitudes toward it (usually with polls), then they work with testing, say, a teaser (PR agency handles the distribution on this), to see the fans response. If it isn't completely and lopsidedly negative, they then move on to the big show, or, set up a campaign to create a favoring (so-called "independent") study (look at who hires them) to show people as a last ditch effort to convince folks how much this is needed. One of the largest ways to market it to the schmucks is through this economic recession/crash/whatever you want to call it. Guilt is also a good marketing tool, and if you've ever watched FSN commercials, you'll know what I'm talking about. This is used so much in business (being a business major) and politics (studying politics) it's absolutely predictable. What I wish they would do is, since they're gonna go nuts with ads anyways, is just go to the Sportsnet style ads and have your commercials, have the quick ad spot between whistles, and the usual commercials, and be done with it. If this ever makes it as far as the AHL (the league's test bunny) people will certainly need to raise some hell. I would never buy a jersey that makes me a complete walking billboard unless those bastards pay me to wear those jerseys. It's enough to show the Red Wings and Reebok/CCM/Koho/Nike logos. It's gonna be interesting to see how far the league will want to push, and the bigger question of how hard, in the upcoming years. Remember, MSG (i.e. Cablevision) got permission from the league to do this. They are the ones that have to pay to broadcast NHL games, and they are subject to league's broadcast rules in these regards.
