Downey Elbows Opposing Goalie In AHL Playoffs

2007-2008: GP- 56 PIM- 116

Downey was the team leader in PIM with Lilja being 2nd with 93 PIM but Lilja played in 23 more games. Downey averaged just slightly over 2 penalties per game that he played in (116/56). I'd say he is prone to putting the team on the PK.

This season is a moot point because he only played in 4 games but he did log 7 PIM if anyone wondered.

You're an idiot. Downey had 10 fights, which takes the total down to 66PIM. In the Avs game he got two misconducts and one coinncidental roughing which takes the total down to 44 PIM. He also had coincidental roughings with Fedoruk, McCormick and Bolland, taking the total down 38 PIM. No doubt a considerable amount of those 38PIM were coincidental minors from scrums etc.

Even so, using your stupid little maths of 38/56 is about 3 penatlies every 5 games. Lidstrom, Holmstrom, Kopecky, Draper, Lilja and Lebda all put Detroit on the PK more times than Downey did. And I doubt 38PIM is even the true figure, it will be much lower.

I hate goons and I sincerely hope he is suspended and has no future at ever playing on the Red Wings roster. There's no place for this in the NHL (or AHL). Totally classless, Downey

We all ***** when Pronger does it in the NHL, Downey is a loser like Pronger!

Indeed. That kind of s*** has no place with the Red Wings. Stay your ass in GR, Downey.

Worst post in the history of LGW.

Guy stuck up for his teammates last year and was a popular guy, and yet this is the gratitude he gets through s***ty posts like this.

You bandwagoners need to support Downey on this since he's a member of the Wings organization. Don't turn your backs on the guy because of one damn incident.

The soft culture of this team has permeated to the fans also. Some of the posts in this thread make me sick.

Wow. People want Mike Brown's head for what he did, but then some people on here encourage what Downey did. I totally thought Brown's hit was a cheap shot, but so was this. Ya maybe his momentum brought him towards the crease, but he definetly stuck his elbow up. I lost a lot of respect for Downey.

Yet you'll be first to cry bloody murder when Pronger maliciously elbows Zetterberg or Datsyuk. Double standard much?

Like I said, Downey has lost all respect. I hate goons and he's proven to be just that, a goon.

i don't know...to me it looks like he just skates over and decks him on purpose.

That's what it looked like to me too. He had anywhere else to skate and decides to skate right into the opposing goalie. As mentioned the Winnipeg articles are very biased (I'm surprised how over-the-top the bias was, kind of like how over-the-top some Downey fans are) toward the Moose, but there's no excusing what Downey did, and it's exemplary as to why he's in GR and not up with the Wings. This team is far too classy now to get involved in that sort of s***. If it were really accidental it would be happening far more often, even with the Wings, and it does not. If we assume Downey is actually valuable to the Griffins, if he gets suspended, he hurts the team. I'd rather not have on this team someone who would do more harm than help, or be selfish in this manner.

So does that mean you never respected Probert? As someone pointed out earlier, he did a lot of cheap stuff in his career also.

That double standard is called being a fan. It's been a while since we dressed any consistent toughness in the lineup, so Wings fans have forgotten what it's like to have to root for a player who plays on or over the edge sometimes.

Downey consistently hurts any squad he's with. I never liked Avery when he wore the Winged wheel and like Downey even less. Every game I see him in its about

fighting and sending a message instead of playing hockey. We have way too much talent both here and in the farm systems to ever see his crap again. I want to see some

more cups hoisted and I think he's a detriment to whatever team he's on. Suspend him? Good riddance.

Why do people make posts like this?

Was Downey a detriment to this team in any way last year for you to post that?

Downey plays on the edge, and when a player does that, sometimes he goes over the edge. That's what happens to enforcers or to many hard hitting 3rd and 4th liners around the league. It doesn't mean he's a consistently dirty player, because as far as I've known, he isn't.

Having a team full of soft players who play a different style of hockey has made people forget what it's like to have a player like that here. Imagine if every team's fanbase started blasting any players who play on the edge hockey and eventually do something stupid like this.

You fans are a bunch a spoiled crybabies. Go root for a basketball team if you don't want to see players like Downey ever being associated with the team.

Seriously, I hope the Red Wings had a good look at this incident. I love Downey but what he did was just plain embarrassing to the organization. It was just sad. Is that what the pro-enforcer movement really wants for this team?

Have to agree. If I don't see GR making a fuss about it, if he's suspended, it's obvious where he stands with the team. Bottom line is wins, and most teams can put up with antics so long as it doesn't interfere with the team winning. Once it goes there, one earns a reputation that's very hard to get rid of. Hence the Avery analogy being right on target. Very glad the Wings coaching/management decided to keep him down in GR. This team's foresight never ceases to amaze me.

It's one damn incident.

How do you expect a guy like him to play on the edge but never do anything that goes over that edge? Just about every tough guy has had some bad incident in his career.

I can't believe people are whining and bitching so much about this guy over this once incident. This whole thread has been full of whiny little misinformative posts about how Downey has always been a detriment, or some crap like that.

Threads like these are joke. Red Wings s*** dont stink, there perfect examples for the NHL, they wouldnt hurt anyone, classy classy dudes.

We've had Kocur, Mccarty, Probert, Clark, Chelios, Ulfie Samuelsson, etc etc. It's an absolute hoot reading oh Downeys a goon, keep him in Grand Rapids, I dont want goons like him playing for Detroit. Wow. It's funny, Franzen cleary tried to hurt Hiller when he scored in Game 1, but Downey also goes after a goalie, but he's an enforcer, so now he's a bad guy and a goon and should never play for Detroit again.

I'm sure there was a reason he was in GR to begin with. The Wings really didn't need him when there are far other more productive players on the ice, or even more prospective ones like Kopecky (who is still a bit of a reach), which really shows of how much use Downey was to the NHL squad. Stuff like this isn't going to get him any positive press, and isn't going to make the coaching staff give him a second look to come back up, so in all likelihood he just shot himself in the foot with the Wings. Not sure how GR's staff would handle it, but I trust they'll make the right decisions, given the outstanding talent they've helped bring to this team.

Oh, yes, clearly. (I had to LOL @ that)

I think Franzen was trying to give Hiller swine flu. :o

Obviously you are an idiot. Why? Your first statement shows you know absolutely nothing about the player. If you did, you would know that Downey helped lead the Providence Bruins to a Calder Cup. He helped Detroit win a Stanley Cup last year. Winning a championship hurts a team how? Secondly, he hurt Detroit last year how? Stepping up and pummeling Ian Lapierre after his cheap shot to Lidstrom was a detriment to the team? You really are an idiot who should be watching figure skating, not hockey. Cheap shots happen in all sports, people get emotional and therefor stupid. Having a guy who is willing to step up and do something about it is not something everyone can do. Having someone who is willing and able to do it and do it in a way that doesn't hurt his team is hard to find and sorry to say, Downey doesn't hurt his team.

Why did every Wing kinda smirk and say, yeah we were sending a message, when asked about what he did? I thought the Red Wings didnt stoop to message sending? I thought they just went out and played hockey? It wasnt close to what Downey did, but if you believe he wasnt trying to get to Hiller, and bump him, maybe not hurt him because it wasnt that bad, but a message sent is a message sent.

His pummeling of Laperriere did not help the team win the cup. It did not bring Lidstrom back. Downey did not even play in the playoffs last season. If someone were really that valuable to a squad, they'd probably be playing when it matters most. Just some food for thought.

(This ain't the Wings of 15+ years ago and I'm glad)

They were crashing the net trying to get a goal. In fact, I suggested the Wings needed to do that in the first place since the Ducks' defense was holding the middle extremely well, forcing the Wings to outside shots which the Ducks would gladly eat 40+ of per game. Suggesting they were trying to send a message by crashing the net is why I mentioned the swine flu thing -- it's an exaggeration. It had nothing to do with trying to hurt Hiller or sending a message, besides wanting to win.
