From The Arizona Republic :

The Glendale City Council agreed 5-2 late Tuesday to pay the National Hockey League up to an additional $25 million so the Phoenix Coyotes could stay another year in the desert.
...

From Toronto Star :

Ice Edge Holdings has withdrawn its minority interest in the proposed purchase of the Phoenix Coyotes ahead of a Glendale City Council vote that would put off finalizing any deal by as long as a year.

Ice Edge CEO Anthony LeBlanc said Tuesday that his organization had been involved in the process with the Coyotes “long enough.”
...

Note to the denizens of the Glendale/Phoenix area: the next regular season starts in October.

Buy some tickets!!!

Where is the thread for the Atlanta Thrashers relocation?

This is going to be the true test for Coyotes fans. If there's no Phoenix Suns season, the club MUST capitalize on it. The people in Phoenix have always claimed that the reason the fans didn't support the team was because the Coyotes weren't successful. They've now got 2 straight playoff appearances and a good shot at another one next season. If the team can't get 15,000+ per game next season, it's time to move to ___________.

read this on dobberhockey this morning.

"From what I've heard from Darren Dreger, and what I've been reading this morning - Winnipeg should be the favorites to land Atlanta, but things would have to move pretty quickly. Now that Phoenix will stay put for another year, Atlanta is the team most likely to move. If Atlanta moves to Winnipeg, they would then go to the Western Conference. That would move Detroit to the East. Winnipeg would knock Colorado out of that division and into the Pacific. That, in turn, would push Dallas into the Central to take Detroit's spot."

I wonder what the Division would look like with Detroit in the East?

Detroit
Toronto
Buffalo
Pittsburgh
Ottawa

Montreal
Boston
NY Rangers
NJ Devils
NY Islanders

Flyers
Washington
Carolina
Florida
Tampa Bay

I will believe it (DET to the Eastern Conference) when I see it. I think there's too much at stake for teams in the Western Conference to lose home games against the Red Wings. It would be great to see Detroit play more games vs Original Six teams, but I don't see them being moved before Nashville or Columbus.

No, I don't think they'll break up the rivalries. They'll try to keep the old Patrick and Adams divisions teams together as best they can. IF Detroit moved to the East (big IF), I could see Detroit going to the Northeast (with all those original 6 teams), Buffalo moving to the Atlantic and the Islanders moving to the Southeast.

Detroit possibly moving east?

Who would've thought having the Yotes squander another year in the desert would see positive results elsewhere

Winnipeg should get a team, and they're very hungry for one...I commend them...especially when you contrast their enthusiasm for an NHL team with the apathetic attitude in Phoenix and Atlanta. However...its not happening anytime soon...are you kidding me? If anything, this whole Phoenix situation and how long its taken should show everyone that Bettman won't move a team until EVERY SINGLE OPTION TO KEEP THEM THERE IS EXPLORED ABOUT 100 TIMES, NO MATTER HOW UNREALISTIC IT IS! <_< Sorry Winnipeg, you'd have more chance at an expansion team, probably.

It would be great for hockey to be back in winnipeg. i grew up there and went to a dozen or so Jets games. Place was rocking and jammed packed, loved EVERY moment of it. However, IF Winnipeg relocates to Atlanta wouldn't you think this would piss off Nordiques fans? Wasn't it in December of this past year there were over 1,000 Nordiques fans in attendance at the Thrashers/islanders game stating their case on having a team back?

BTW: It would be more fitting for Columbus to go east.
Then again, I'm just a fan of the NHL

My friend that lives in Phoenix sent me a text tonight saying that they are reporting Hulsizer is now pulling out of the deal. So this means that that the NHL is back to square one? Except they've got their $25 million coming from Glendale.

This is all I've been able to find about it.

My LInk

At least Hulsizer is a bona fide hockey guy who was prepared to begin the mighty task of rebuilding this franchise the moment the deal was done. Had the deal been done before the trade deadline, Hulsizer would have approved trades that added payroll, trades that couldn't be consummated with the league continuing to run the team, sources told ESPN.com.

As for Hulsizer's future in the proceedings, if it looks like the city of Glendale is going to keep him hanging while it tries to find an owner who will kick in more money, sources familiar with the deal insist Hulsizer will walk away. If he does, it might be the last, best chance to keep the team in Glendale, regardless of Tuesday's council vote.

The bond sale that is apparently crucial to the Hulsizer deal has been held up by the threat of a lawsuit from a public interest group, the Goldwater Institute.

How the city of Glendale hopes to avoid this threat moving forward is anyone's guess.

Ah yeah I heard that, its because they're talking about Jerry Reinsdorf in Phoenix again...

Reinsdorf pops up again

anndddd because Hulsizer is getting impatient looking at the St. Louis Blues according to Forbes:
Hulsizer/Blues

Finally, another story from Forbes about the situation...and just how bad it is....

Coyotes lose money even with 25 mil subsidy

...even after the Phoenix Coyotes got a $25 million subsidy from taxpayers last week in economically ravaged Glendale, Arizona, the NHL franchise lost $11.6 million during the 2010-11 season. And it is appearing more and more likely that Matthew Hulsizer is not going to buy he Coyotes and keep them in Glendale, where he would have to do summersaults to make the franchise profitable even with an annual subsidy.

Arm-twisting taxpayers who are afraid of having an empty building should the Coyotes move into paying $25 million a season so the hockey team can still lose millions of dollars simply makes no sense, even NHL commissioner Gary Bettman can get more revenue sharing from high-revenue teams to low-revenue teams.

Atlanta Journal Constitution: Atlanta Spirit, True North in negotiations about Thrashers sale, relocation.

Vivlamore has done an excellent job covering this story.

Cue Bettman coming in to tell Atlanta Spirit they can't sell the team because, erm, they don't own it anymore and now the NHL does, so hush now True North and let's get the ATL city council to cough up $25 million/year.

Anyway, I know things appear to be moving fast today but I'll believe it when I see the moving vans.

\EDIT

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, speaking on NHL Live radio last week, said the situation regarding franchise relocation comes down to ownership.

“It’s the reason we ended up leaving Quebec City and Winnipeg,” Bettman said. “Those teams moved when nobody wanted to own the club there anymore. If you get to that position, where somebody is not prepared to own the club anymore and you can’t find a new perspective purchaser, then you are really between a rock and a hard place.

Gary, has anyone with actual, physical money ever come in with a serious offer to buy the Coyotes and keep them there in the last two years? I'll hang up and listen.

MOD: Please change the thread title to reflect Atlanta in the mix...thanks

I'm really surprised at Bettman/Daly not really giving a rip about the Thrashers, and yet fighting tooth and nail to keep the Yotes in Arizona. Not to mention the speed at which this is developing...the nhl is taking it seriously and apparently has drafted a schedule for next season for either Atlanta or Winnipeg.

My question...on that alternate Winnipeg schedule...WHO DID THEY MOVE EAST?? :yowza: Bob McKenzie is tweeting that he thinks Winnipeg would play next season in the Southeast division, and that they won't EVER let Detroit move east:

@TSNBobMcKenzie
I'm of opinion that IF realignment is required, DET won't move to East, at least not in short term, maybe ever. West teams like DET in West.

Well, with the city of Glendale going ahead with the agreement and throwing in a last year, it would seem like that killed the issue of the Coyotes to Winnipeg, and now the issue of Atlanta going is far closer of a deal than the Coyotes was.

Although, given Gary Bettman is a dumbass SOB I'm not sure what it's worth and I feel bad for those from Winnipeg who are having their strings pulled, as well as any fan who would want to see them have a franchise again. I do know that the Coyotes' issue just got more interesting as to what they (Glendale+NHL) are going to do following the 2011-12 season. They anticipating an apocalypse?

Glendale doesn't have anything left. The only chance (and they're still talking about this in PHX) is to make some kind of a deal with the native american tribe that wants to build a casino there in Glendale. The city council is mentally challenged, though, and I think absolutely no progress will be made in the year's time that they just bought themselves for 25 million.

Something tells me Bettman will swoop in at the last minute and kill this Thrashers/True North stuff.

Had Thrashers goalie Chris Mason on the show last Saturday. Good to know that there are some NHL goalies who won't have a problem playing in the Peg'.
