The best "insults" you've heard against the Wings

Recommended Posts

During playoff time, when other team's fans have to deal with the Red Wings and have to watch the Red Wings, I always notice that they don't pull any punches against the team.

This thread is dedicated to laughing at all of those who hate the Wings, management, the city, the fans, Osgood, Osgood's helmet, or other things that you see or hear of from time to time.

Hated the Wings ever since they purchased a Stanley Cup back in 2002. I'll never forgive them for that.

No player in the NHL toots their own horn more than Osgood does. What a ******.

Bite me.

I have never liked the Red Wings. Not from the first time I saw them in 1980 when the Norris family was running them into the ground, not after Mike Ilitch bought them and turned them around, not now, not tomorrow, not ever. I have always just plain hated them. As I have said on other boards: if Al Qaeda had a hockey team, and that team were playing the Red Wings, I would be in the stands wearing a burqa and holding a sign saying "GO OSAMA". That is how much I hate them. Respect them? Yes. Like them or be nice to them? HELL NO.

And then there's their WalMart fanbase, who are (in my experience) overwhelmingly the assiest and among the least hockey-knowledgeable fans in the NHL. Sabres fans may be drunk and delusional, but at least when they sober up and the meds kick in one can talk some hockey with them and actually get some cogent discussion going. Wings fans? Fuhgeddaboudit. All the majority of 'em know is "DURRRR GO RED WINGS WE GOTZ CUPZ AND YOU DONT UR JEST JILLUZZ CUZ WE GOT MO FANZ YO DEE DEE DEE JUGGALOZ F4 LYF HA HA HA". They couldn't even recognize Gordie freakin' Howe on the street if he threw an elbow at their heads.

Go ahead Wings mods, give me points for speaking troofz about WingsNation. I don't care. Say it's just because of 2002 and that I didn't even know anything about hockey until that year and that I'm lying about having been a fan of the sport since childhood, if that's what makes your e-peen feel larger. Again, I don't care.

But I will never cheer for the Detroit Red Wings or wish them well, and I would just as soon prefer to ignore the existence of their fanbase (because that's the only thing that keeps me from driving up to the Nexus of Evil errr Joe Louis Arena wearing a backpack nuke and pulling the rip cord).

The only thing I will do--if they win--is congratulate them. Because I do at least have some modicum of class and good manners.

What else can others think of to rationalize their hate for the Wings?

Funny stuff there. :D

Typical fan stuff though. They are going to find ways to dislike other teams they don't like, especially teams that have had great runs at success, like the Red Wings, or New England Patriots, New York Yankees, etc.

As for media bias against the Wings, it's often overblown by people in here I think. But, you can pretty much substitute any team name for the Wings there, and the same can be said about fans of that team as well. While I do think there is definitely a positive bias towars the East and Pittsburgh right now, stuff like that and media stuff rarely bother me, I usually just tune stuff like this out and watch the game, I just don't see much point in going all out of my way to find ways why the media hates my team, when 99 times out of 100 that's generally not the case. No need to be a disgruntled fan.

I went to Chicago a few years back to watch them play Detroit. for the last game of the regular season. We left after losing in OT to them and we got hackled, saying the usual, detroit sucks. What was funny was we were going to the playoffs and they were going to the golf courses. I made sure they knew that :)

I think deep down, they were just jealous.

The "Ozzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzgoooooooooooooooooooooooood" chant in the crowd of opposing buildings always makes me laugh. It takes me back to 1993-1994 when Ozzie was hard at work earning him that chant. Letting in slappers from the red line, never clutch, and seemingly in space on a lot of plays. He has certainly come a long way from that time period.

Everytime I hear that, I laugh thinking "that doesn't even faze him anymore". He has been through so much in his career, I doubt that even bothers him.

Forgot who did it, but during the 01-02 season they showed on the jumbo tron the wings bench, but instead of using live footage they had pretaped footage of a bunch of old men in Wings jerseys and I thought it was really funny.

I haven't heard any. They're all lame, hackneyed and sophomoric. And it's all the same; we buy Cups, we're old, the league loves us, the refs favor us, the city is a cesspool, Euros are soft, blah blah ******* blah.

I wish these loons would beat a new drum.

Atlanta maybe. This year every time the Wings got penalized they showed a pretaped thing of a kid in a Wings jersey. Once he pretended to fart in the penalty box, the other time he took his jersey and pads off and had a pink shirt on underneath.

Before game 7 against Ducks one guy who somehow in my friends list posted on Facebook that he hopes that Wings lose because they're soft and whole thread kept up with this thought (NYR, PHI fans). On my comment that we soundly outhit Anaheim 155-210 after 6 games he explained that by saying "soft" he meant "Wings don't fight".

Most fighters are golfing by now.

These days, the only insults I hear are about the city of Detroit. As if bashing the state of a city is somehow inherently linked to the state of its hockey team.

Well, if they want to think about it that way -- the team's city with a s***ty economy, empty seats, and lots of crime, is still kicking their team's ass and winning cups. There's not much more self-ownage one can commit.

I live in Canada, so 2003, 2004, and 2006 I heard all the, "The Red Wings are Playoff chokers" crap, even though we won it all in 1997, 1998, and 2002.

I don't get to many of those people talking hockey with me now after another Cup and 3 straight Conference Finals appearances, which is fine with me. I get tired of everyone's analysis anyway. I'm kind of snobby that way

oh man,...i have a guy i grew up with, he's a massive pens fan. Doesn't know a thing about the NHL in general but he knows the pens (common, i've found)

Anyway, it doesn't matter,...the wings "always" "buy the cup" "buy the refs" "cheat" etc. etc. etc.

The worst part is listening to his twisted perspective. During the ducks series i got so many txt messages from him saying that the wings bought the refs, even during game seven!

The hatred of this team is totally irrational.

The funniest thing to me living in Raleigh is the irrational hatred most canes fans have for the wings. It's like they can't let 02 go. Gah, i'll never hear the end of it if we beat them for the cup this year.

I'm from Hamilton so I feel your pain. :P All of the people who taunt me don't usually know a whole lot about hockey so I just do my best Bob McKenzie (or perhaps a 6'4 Darren Pang) impression and explain exactly why they're wrong and why the Red Wings should win it all, again. The dumb hockey fans are the best because they're the easiest to shut up.

"Holmstrom is the dirtiest player in the league" (From a Ducks fan making it more ironic. And Holmstrom doesn't even do anything besides stand in front of the goalie)

Wings are old (because the youth in Pittsburgh worked for them last year, and I don't expect the youth in Chicago to work miracles either)

Wings are full of soft Euros (Because you wouldn't piss your pants if you saw Kronwall, Lilja, or Ericsson coming at you)

Wings always buy their team (Which is why Zetterberg, Hossa, Franzen, and Lidstrom are all signed at lower than their value)

Detroit is a s*** hole (I've seen areas of New York, Chicago, and other cities that aren't too pretty. And personally I don't care because most of us live in the suburbs anyway)

And best of all...

The Wings are so arrogant because they won 11 Stanley Cups (I'm sorry but when you win 11 Stanley Cups, there is no way to share that information with others without making your team sound awesome. The cup banner speak for themselves. 100% PURE FACT)

Before the Lockout I would always hear, "The Wings buy their Cups", mostly it was from Leaf fans. The Leafs were the most bought team in the League, and I would inform them about that, because they either traded away all their draft picks or sucked at scouting.

I've never understood the Detroit sh!t hole comments. I'm the first person to admit Detroit is a dump, but what does that have to do with Hockey?

Nashville always has the famed "Chelios is a sissy" chants. Well in a game last year, the chants start to rain down ago. A few seconds later, Chelios sends a rocket past Mason to put the Wings up 2-1.

Epic fail Preds....Epic Fail

Seriously though, the worst insults of individual Wings players probably come from here unfortunately.

I'm not exactly sure about 97 or 98 but having the highest payroll only worked once for the Wings - 2002.

Outside of that year they were first or second round disappointments.

2000-01 - 55.1 - First round exit

2001-02 - 66.6 - Cup

2002-03 - 68.4 - First round exit

2003-04 - 77.9 - Second round exit

You could say that the salary cap was put in place so that organizations like the Wings and Rangers couldn't 'buy their cups' so to speak. But based on the playoff results from when they were really at the top of the league with Lidstrom getting 10 million a year, it was actually quite disappointing and maybe even a real waste.

Last year a Flyers fan said to me, "The Wings always choke in the playoffs." I countered with 3 Cups (now 4 of course) in 10 years and after a moment of thinking about that in relation to his pathetic drought he shut up. Even a Flyers fan could realize that was a stupid thing to say.

I never understood how "buying a championship" is an insult to an organization. Isn't the ultimate goal to win a championship? Wouldn't you want your team's management to do everything they can (within the league's rules) to get the best players? This makes no sense. Can you imagine Ken Holland saying "You know... we could go out and get the top players in the league and have a good chance for a cup. On second thought we better not because some neanderthal fans from opposing teams might accuse us of "buying a cup"."

So anyone who uses the "buying a cup" insult, would obviously prefer that their team remain bottom feeders because that would be way better than other team's fans having the perception that their team used all their available resources to build a championship team.

Agreed.

Pre-lockout days, I consider "buying a cup" to be equal to "having enough faith in the team to invest in it".
