Doc Holiday

The best "insults" you've heard against the Wings

i'm sort of new around here but here is mine...

2003 I am sitting at the United Center a few days after Christmas but before the new year with tickets I got as a gift. Took my old man, only Wings fan I actually knew before I went to college and the Wings were still thinking about the holidays or something and lost 3-0.

Mind you the Hawks were in the midst of one of those magical 20-win seasons their fans have grown accustomed to seeing, their fans in the section in and around my old man and I start chanting "Fed-er-ov" as if losing him to free agency was supposed to make their 10 wins or whatever they had at that point in the season seem that much better.

Plenty of other Wings fans around us quickly jumped in with their own chants of "The-o" for what was their "biggest free agent signing in a decade" just a year before, only to be chased out of town after his addiction to the gentleman's clubs. A few others were chanting the common "playoffs" and "Stanley Cup" I've gotten used to hearing whenever I see the Wings in Chicago.

The amount of meatball/bandwagon fans in the Windy City makes my head hurt. Thank you Bill Wuertz for not allowing me to watch Hawks games on TV as a young child, the sports fan part of me really appreciates it now.

I saw this one on a Chicago message board, it's not really insulting but I thought it was funny. I believe they were commenting on the wings being all over the puck, the comment was: "They were on the puck like hobos on ham sandwiches"

Too funny!

Yeah the bandwagon one really gets me. I hate it especially when Pens fans say it because they were in danger of losing their team a few years ago and now all of a sudden the Pens are the best thing ever?

Same with the Hawks. A few years ago, some of their games weren't even televised. Now everyone is following them. Hawks fans say it's not bandwagoning as much as it is "people finally relieved that their team is doing well." Isn't that the definition of bandwagon?

I don't know about the best but one of the worst just occured a little while ago in hockeysteams.com's chat room. Some Pens fan was belittling Hossa and praying for a Wings/Pens rematch so Hossa's departure could be shoved up his posterior.

I countered that I couldn't blame Hoss for jumping ship if Therrien was going to be behind the bench again and he replied with " Babcock is no better of a coach than Therrien".

There was more but it isn't even worth repeating...

Whoa.... Wow.... Thems be fightin' words.

Sorry but that just opened up the floodgates with me.

Mike Babcock in my eyes is the best coach in the NHL.

First of all, to some it may just be a line on a resume, but I find it amazing that he has a Masters degree in Sports Psychology. Now, he probably didn't have in mind that he wanted to be a coach while he was studying, but I like that he can bring that sort of approach to coaching. You're dealing with athletes but you're also dealing with human beings. Certain nuances such as habits, motivation, self-esteem, confidence and cognitive behavioral thought processes are really important in sports. Along with other details such as a concern for not only which skills and abilities fit well together but also which personalities fit together. Many people go through college and don't use their degrees in their jobs but I have no doubt that his education enhanced his understanding of athletes and their psychological processes, which goes well with his ability to coach.

What I find most interesting about him is his ability to have perspective and self-awareness; being aware of the things you can control and the things you can't. It's almost like a spiritual aspect of him. You listen to him in press conferences and sometimes he gets really philosophical. It's sometimes strange and yet quite interesting. All in all, I think his approach really helps him to be an excellent coach.

Other than that he just has the traits of any great coach in sports today. He's fiercely competitive that it's infectious to his players. He loves winning and hates losing. He's incredibly afraid of being unprepared, which leads to his obsession with making sure everyone's prepared. Last but not least, he's a no-nonsense, direct kind of person, which is the type that tends to be really effective in coaching.

I know it's probably some 14 year old that made that stupid comment but I just really felt as if I had to defend and demonstrate how incredibly unfounded that statement was.

Well said

In fact it makes me kind of ashamed of my "who won the cup" ? response...

When it gets to the playoffs, their beards are too red. It's as though every Red Wing was a ginger. It reminds me of the old NES hockey games where every player looks the exact same because the NES could only display 16 different colors at a time, so everybody gets the same skin/jersey/hair combo.

The two that I have heard the most (and both of which are readily seen on the Ducks' board) is that the city of Detroit is a dump (ok, but why does that matter?) and that the Wings dive to get penalties called on the other team.

They seem convinced that the euro players are so soft that they dive all the time.

If you read a game day thread of the Ducks, doesn't matter who they are playing, almost every third post is "OMG, _____ just dived so bad there - What a wus!!!"

They take so much pride in having the biggest, baddest team in the league, but then can not understand how their players could possibly take down another.

It is not a Wings insult, but me and my wife thought it was pretty funny.

This was yelled at me at the Winter Classic this year:

My wife and I (all decked out in Wings Jerseys etc...) were walking through the concourse at Wrigley Field and a couple of guys were walking toward us and yelled:

"Lions Suck..."

We Said: "You are right...:

They said "We don't got anything else..."

Reminds me of a time at the All-State Arena. I was there for game of the 2001 Calder Cup finals (they lost to the Orlando Solar Bears, backstopped by Norm Maricle, once prospect of the Wings, he got pushed out by Manny Legace for those with long memories here). Anyway, I was walking around in my Konstantinov jersey, and my buddy (Don't laugh) was in his Avs Sakic jersey and we drew more than a few looks. So this was a few days after we were put out by the LA Kings and this stupid Hawks fan comes up to me and says "How about them Wings!" and I said "We made the playoffs, how about them Hawks!" Then he turned bright red and ran off, as the whole concourse was laughing at him.

Other than the fact that they are for the most part a teaam of people who are either to cowardly or too weak to drop the gloves, I haven't heard many Wings criticisms that have much truth to them.

My Wife loves the Wings, but often comments about what an ugly bunch they are compared to other teams. I guess that could be an insult, but she doesn't intend it as one, just an observation. She calls out Homer, Datsyuk, Daper, Maltby and Franzen in particular. She does think Lilja, Osgood and Downy are good looking though. She has good taste in men.

Aside from the "Detroit is a dump" one (which doesn't really bother us), the one about "The Red Wings are the Yankees of hockey" really gets under my skin. If a knowledgable NHL fan (or strong fan of another team) doesn't like us b/c we win all the time, I can handle that. But it's when you get those people who don't care about the NHL (or at least haven't since the lockout) who tell us that we buy all our players, and you almost have to explain to these people (a) there is a Salary Cap; (b) Datsyuk, Zetterberg, and much of our other key guys are all homegrown and drafted in VERY low rounds; © the Yankees WISH they had a business model where they're able to bring in (or cultivate) quality team players still in their prime.

I live in Minnesota now, and I quickly realized that being knowledgable about hockey is one thing, but that doesn't necessarily mean you understand the NHL well enough to criticize a team like the Wings. The NHL didn't exist here from 1993-2000, so you live in this bizarre alternate reality where hockey itself is very important and popular, but the NHL itself has almost a cult-like following.

Here's what they say in Pittsburgh about the Wings:

(2009) "They throw the puck down Holmstrom's pants and launch him into the net." - It used to be Primeau, now its Holmstrom.

(Always) "Osgood? Its more like Osbad. HA HA"

(2002) "All the Wings are old and they have NOTHING in the minors. I can't wait to watch them get beat down by the league after all these old farts retire. It'll be so sweet!!"

(Hasek on the Sabres in 2001) "We beat the greatest goalie in the world!!"

(Hasek on the Wings in 2002) "He's so old and way past his prime!"

(1996) Fedorov in the Nike ad when he gets run over by a zamboni - "YEAH!! Run over that stupid Red Wing! I could watch that all day!"

(2008) "What do the Wings have? All these old guys. Maltby, Draper, Chelios. We have Crosby, Malkin, Hossa, Scary Gary, Big George Laraque, Max Talbot..."

(2008) "If we had shown up for the first couple games, we would've EASILY won that series"

(2009 after first playoff loss to Ana) "I heard Hossa was going to sign with the Ducks in the offseason because he thinks they have a better chance of winning the Cup. HA HA"

(2009) "I want to play the Wings again so we can get our revenge on them and Hossa!"

That's all I can think of right now, I'm sure I'll hear a ton more IF there's a rematch this year.

I loved that one! LOL

(2009) "I want to play the Wings again so we can get our revenge on them and Hossa!"

This I never understood... Wasn't Hossa a mid season signing for the Pens? Hasn't he spent more time with the Wings than the Pens? Since when did the Pens ever own Hossa?

Sour grapes, that's what it is. They have two of the three best players in the league and they're pissed that Hossa signed with us? WTF?!?!

This wasnt an insult against the Wings really, but it was something I found hilarious when it happened and reading this thread made me think of it.

Back in the 2002 Finals, Im pretty sure it was Game 4 as well, when Shanny went to the penalty box and there was that woman non-stop heckling, and screaming at him. And he just looks at her, gives the motion with his hand for her to either shave her armpits or wear some deoderant, then waved his hand in front of his nose cuz "she stank". Was too funny.

Heading to the Winter Classic, an SUV pulled up next to me on the street outside Wrigley and a guy yelled out the window the typical, "Detroit sucks!"

My reply was, "yep, clearly they give out the Stanley Cup for sucking."

The grin he had on his face fell and he just pulled his head back into his car and rolled up the window.

All of the Hawks fans around me that were kinda laughing pretty much shut up at that point.

I should have added, "by the way, what happened in 1961 that hasn't happened since?" but I didn't want to get my ass kicked.

That and I was with two buddies who were Hawks fans.

Somewhat off topic, but at the innagural winter classic in buffalo, some of my teammates drove up to support the pens. Long story short, someone broke into their SUV and made off with mad money, purses, nintendo ds, etc. After the game when they realized what happened, they pulled through the tailgate to ask the locals where the nearest police station/ what their phone number was. The buffalo fan, a soccer mom with her kids decked out in buff jerseys, seeing my mates in great despair, responded only with "sorry, we don't help penguin fans" and walked away.

Nothing wrong with Sakic fans. He has always been the only Avs player I've ever liked. He reminds me so much of Stevie Y and I will be bummed when he finally retires.

Off topic, but this thread reminds me of the time we road tripped to Chicago to catch a Wings/Hawks game. This was back when The Russian Five were freaks of nature and their puck possession and passing were unbelievable. Every time the R5 got possession of the puck a buddy of mine would start yelling "Here comes the s***... here comes the s***... here comes the s***". Over and over and over and over until they lost possession or scored. It got so bad that people started to really get mad. They started throwing s*** at him. He didn't care. He kept it up until security came by and politely asked him to stop. Last thing I remember after security left was some woman behind us say: "f***in' *******".

I don't know about that. I mean she is married to you... :P

But she is right. The Wings have some seriously ugly players.
