can we resign Hossa and Hudler/Samuelsson?

I know that a lot of posters don't like to talk about the off-season during the post-season (so, please, don't waste your time letting me know about it here), but to those like myself that do:

Is there any chance that we could resign both Hossa and Sammy or Huds!? (and don't give me this "its impossible to resign Hossa garbage either...he'll take a major discount if he sticks, regardless) It'd be great, but to say the least, we'd still look pretty good just getting Hossa back.

I'm not convinced of anything until it's written in stone. Heaven knows with this team and Ken Holland. And I'm still not convinced that we won't have some guys retire after this season. Maybe Draper and/or Maltby will want to go out on top. Heaven knows. I don't. I trust Ken Holland.

chelios, draper, maltby most likely won't be back...abdelkader, helm, leino make the team out of camp. the wings have some young talent ready to move in and replace some veteran salary.

i wouldn't be surprised to see them be able to keep both hossa and hudler...i assume there won't be a major push to sign samuelson (nothing personal, just a numbers game).

Swaping Chelios, Draper, and Maltby for Abdelkader, Helm, and Leino gives us almost exactly 1 million in cap room. The cap will probably go down at least a million so that space is virtually unuseable. And that's assuming Leino re-signs at his current rate of 875K.

Drapes and Malts are coming back. They have contracts. Draper is in the first season of a 3-year extension ffs. Edited by Systemfel

Problem is that if Maltby and Draper retire, their salaries still count against the cap because the signed after they were 35.

Maltby is 35 right now. He signed his currrent contract in May of 2007, therefore, if he retires his salary would not count against the cap. You are correct, however, that if Draper were to retire, his salary would count against the cap.

oh well then, like i said, even if we lose sammy and hudler, we should still be the hands-down favorites to win it all.

Scratch off Kopecky (Garbage for $1M), I can for see them losing Lilja (trade or release) just because they have so much defensive depth. That frees almost another $1M. Keep in mind that they will be losing Conklin too (That is another $1M). They still have Howard on his initial contract so he is making minimum salary but he will count against the cap. Lebda brings a lot more speed and oppurtunity to the table than Lilja in the 3rd spot. Lilja is a solid D man but Lebda I think proved a lot to the brass that he can play 22mins or so and be effective (see Game 5 vs. Chicago) although he had a LOT of hiccups in Game 1 vs. Pittsburgh

In a perfect world, Draper would have one more year, two MAX and Maltby would get replaced by another "skilled" bruiser and Kopecky runs away to Europe.

Im not trying to blast you but Zetterberg, Datsyuk, and Hossa would only play together is we pull our goalie and have 6 skaters.

Also, McCollum is years away from being on this team. If we don't sign another goalie this off-season and Howard is our back-up, the third goalie will more than likely be Laarson.

First of all, Conklin makes 750K, Howard makes 716K. Kopecky makes 500K this year. If they release Lilja you have to buy-out his contract so it would be virtually pointless. And if you're arguing that Lebda is better than Lilja... I won't even start.

You are correct. I thought Maltby was a little bit older.

I would rather keep Sammy and Hudler than re-signing Hossa for another 7.5 million. It's our depth that is winning the series against the Pens, not Big Gun Hossa.

If Hossa is re-signed, it will be alot cheaper than 7.5 million. I promise you that.

Tough problem, but a nice problem to have. It's almost as if you really have to go by the what have you done for me lately? rule. Whoever is on the hottest streak will have the tiebreaker in terms of being signed.

If we could only sign two of them. I'd say keep Huds and Hossa. I'd be ok with letting Sammy go as long as we keep Happy Hudler. Or Sammy n Huds. either way I wanna keep seein huds in the red n white winged wheel

You could probably do it if you got Rafalski and Datsyuk to waive their NTCs and agree to go somewhere else. Lidstrom would be another NTC that you could ask him if he wants to waive it and go somewhere else. But I'd like to keep those three here.

Buyouts aren't really an option as then the Wings are still responsible for some if not all of the salary (I can't remember how much...I just know that right now it's putting a kink in for the Wild as they've got a million plus tied up in Parrish for a few years even though he did a try out with Dallas and is getting a salary from them)

And for a trade...then they have to pay the new guy.

Best bet is with the contract renewals...and that leaves Kopecky, Sammy, Huds, Conks, Howard, Hossa, and the guys from GR as the main players.

I don't envy Ken Holland one bit right now. I have a feeling though that retaining Huds could get tricky due to the RFA situation. With everything going on and being so close to the cap, it won't be hard for another team with money to burn to make an offer Detroit can't match. They're going to want to sign Huds and sign him early if they plan to keep him.

I love Hudler too, but Leiono basically fills his postion easily, and were bound to see some picks the other way. Shame for us Hudler fans, but a mutual benficial signing for Hudler and the Wings.
