FireCaptain 563 Report post Posted June 1, 2009 OK, number crunchers - they've put a definite range to the cap for next year. 54M - 56.7M. Despite the current economic downturn, Bettman said the NHL experienced four per cent real revenue growth over the last year. He indicated that next season's salary cap will end up somewhere between US$54 million and its current spot at $56.7 million. http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=280410 Without gutting the roster, I can't see a way Hossa can stay with those numbers. bigbill12 0 Report post Posted June 1, 2009 Ya.... I was thinking that the other day. I'm thinking the only way we can keep Hossa is if Hudler, and Samuelson is gone. Is that worth keeping Hossa? I think so

mjlegend 155 Report post Posted June 1, 2009 Damn, I liked Hoss. It's so difficult to gut a player off this current roster because there's no obvious Derian Hatcher-contract to cut from this team.
TheUkrainian 49 Report post Posted June 1, 2009 At least if Hudler goes we get picks. Not so sure about Sammy, it's nice to have a right hander, but having someone who can score would be nice too (not saying Sammy sucks, just that his shots tend to hit the goalie or miss completely). I wanna see Hossa around for a long time, even when he's not scoring, seeing him carry the puck up the ice with with speed and strenght is amazing to watch. good morning 10 Report post Posted June 1, 2009 HaHa good ole Hatcher. I loved him because he was a Michigander... but man was he a bust. I remember someone here commenting on how Hatcher was so slow he was practically skating backwards in time. That will always be what I think of whenever I hear the poor guy mentioned. TheOwl 77 Report post Posted June 1, 2009 (edited) Ya.... I was thinking that the other day. I'm thinking the only way we can keep Hossa is if Hudler, and Samuelson is gone. Is that worth keeping Hossa? I think so Even still. The Wings only have around 5 million for next season, that's 4 forwards that need to be signed. Assume Helm and Abby become full time (1.5 combined), that gives you 3.5 million to sign 2 more forwards. So unless Hossa will take 3 million a season, he's a gonner. Or Holland would have to move someone with a significant salary, and at this point I'd rather have Flipulla over Hossa. If any team is screwed for next year, it's Pittsburgh. They have 10 million in cap space to sign 5 forwards, 3 D-men and a back-up goalie. 9 players, 10 million in cap space = 10 rookies. They can basically say good-bye to their 2nd D-pair and almost everyone not named Crosby or Malkin on their first/second lines. Penguins are screwed. wingsdiehard13 33 Report post Posted June 1, 2009 HaHa good ole Hatcher. I loved him because he was a Michigander... but man was he a bust. He only played 15 games with the Wings, I don't think that's enough time to decide whether or not he was a bust. Especially when the majority of the games he played with the Wings were after a knee injury.
stevie for president 42 Report post Posted June 1, 2009 (edited) i saw on Mlive that league revenues are about 4% less than last year which would put the cap at roughly 54 million, but the NHLPA could exercize an option to raise the cap by 5% which would bring it up to 56.1 million, .6 million less than this years cap. source: http://blog.mlive.com/snapshots/2009/05/br...s_chairman.html http://www.nypost.com/seven/05312009/sport...1746.htm?page=0 (this is quoted in the mlive blog, i didnt read it yet though) Edited June 1, 2009 by stevie for president
FireCaptain 563 Report post Posted June 1, 2009 (edited) What the hell??? One group says 4% revenue INCREASE, one says 4% revenue DECREASE. I guess that's the "real revenue" and "currency exchange" accounting for an 8 point swing. Also, 56.7M (current cap) - 2.5M (salary cap decrease) + 5% (player's bump) = 56.1M??? That math is off. I get 56.9M. Edited June 1, 2009 by FireCaptain
Jake Ryan 1 Report post Posted June 1, 2009 The Red Wings will have to let go of some of their vets (Holmstrom, Samuelsson, Draper, Maltby, Chelios, McCarty) if they hope to keep the Hoss and Hudler.
akustyk 84 Report post Posted June 1, 2009 let's start with the proper question first: is Hossa willing to stay with Wings if he does/does not win a cup? because I could see him staying if we lost but there's a fair chance he'll head for better money and more challenging environment once he tastes the glory. maybe not Edmonton. maybe not Pittsburgh as their fans and players (read: Talbot) clearly showed they're d!cks. but he could easily go for a team like St Louis or Carolina which seem to be headed in right direction next season and need quality scoring + experience. Reds4Life 51 Report post Posted June 1, 2009 (edited) Hossa has to go. He is a great player, but if he stays Wings will lose depth players. Edited June 1, 2009 by Reds4Life
egroen 384 Report post Posted June 1, 2009 I have heard all year that revenues were up. I am guessing they will agree to up the cap by 5%, but probably not 10%.

The cap is coming down. It had been said earlier after a GM meeting the cap was going to come down by up to $2mil.
Chris L 0 Report post Posted June 1, 2009 Without gutting the roster, I can't see a way Hossa can stay with those numbers. It's simple. He takes a pay cut but a longer contract or he goes. He knows that, and the Wings know that. That's how Hank and Pav signed and that's how future players will sign with the Wings. Hossa has already said, publically, that he wants to stay, he'll do what he has to so he can stay, and yes he'd take less money to stay in Detroit. He loves it here, the skill of the players, the system of the team and the orginization's culture and front office. He's happy here, if he wants to stay happy, he'll take a pay cut and stay for 5-6 years. Look, the wings bring a lot more to a player than just Illich's deep pockets. If that were the only thing about the wings we wouldn't have Hank and Pav, much less Lidstrom, Stuart, Raffi and the rest. No, putting on the Winged Wheel, right now, is like putting on a Yankees uniform in Baseball -- its a special and meaningful thing (albeit for very different reasons). Were I Holland, I'd be selling players on the other things one gets while in this organization besides plain money, skill, tradition, and family: these are the things you get as a Red Wing. If Hossa wants to say, he'll take a pay cut and stay. If Hossa wants to be a mercenary, as everybody accuses him of, he'll walk after this campaign is over. But everything he has said, so far, has suggested that he wants to stay for less.
dat's sick 1,002 Report post Posted June 1, 2009 I haven't crunched all the numbers, but I think Hossa would have to take a Franzen-like deal in order for it to work out. I don't think it's the end of the world if we can't keep him. He's helped us a ton this year and hopefully he can finish it off with a cup win.
