Cern 0 Report post Posted June 3, 2009 Another thing to note is that the outdoor screening of the games in Pittsburgh is apparently sponsored by VS. They say something like 2000 people go to the thing, which absolutely pales in comparison to when something like 10 000 people showed up outside of HSBC Arena for the 07 ECF, but they always seem to like to make a big deal about it during broadcasts, even though attendance at the Joe outnumbers the arena and the outdoor screening combined. Funny that they don't ever have something reciprocal set up in Detroit...

soonboomer 31 Report post Posted June 3, 2009 I was at game 4 last year in Pittsburgh, and I think there might have been 100 of us total in the whole arena. It's my understanding that ticket sales are restricted to certain states, of which Michigan (and any other state of a playoff opponent) is probably not included. supernoma 0 Report post Posted June 3, 2009 They still do. How does that work? I wouldn't mind watching a game there but I'm not a season ticket holder or anything.

cirov19 1 Report post Posted June 3, 2009 Transplants. Nobody from Michigan moves to Pittsburgh. I will hand it to Pens fans though, they definitely do travel well. Or, they're not from Pittsburgh at all but people from Windsor/Ontario who hate the Wings (trust me - there's a lot of them here.) Just like people from Cal who hate the Ducks go to the games to boo them, meanwhile they're actually Sharks/Kings fans.
Marty Midnight 0 Report post Posted June 3, 2009 (edited) Another thing to note is that the outdoor screening of the games in Pittsburgh is apparently sponsored by VS. It's not sponsored by VS, but VS does allow the game to be shown on the screen outside the arena, unlike NBC which prohibits it, thus the 'thanks to VS' announcement over the PA during the game. As far as I know, Michiganers are allowed to buy tickets to the game, but not allowed to buy cepholopods from the local fish mongers. Showing the games on the screen outside the arena started last year. In the space they are working with out there you can't see the game well if you're not in the closer half of the 2,000 that show up. master 0 Report post Posted June 3, 2009 All I can say is, if I wanted to go to a different arena and watch my favorite team play...and if they dont let me in than I'll be like, "let me in or I'll kick your @$$" style.
Coffey77 0 Report post Posted June 3, 2009 No, they dont do this...I'm pretty sure. I've been a season ticket holder for a long time, and I don't think this is the case. There were a TON of Caps fans at Game

If you would've said this a few days ago, I'm sure plenty of members here would've donated money towards a ticket if you were to go there and say let me in or ill kick you ass. AtomicPunk 296 Report post Posted June 4, 2009 I was at Mellon for Scotty Bowman's 1000th win. The place is a dump. I can only imagine how much dumpier it is 12 years later. Some of the stairs were WOOD, for God's sake. But the seats were good. I almost felt like I could dump my beer on Ken Wregget.

Jwo 7 Report post Posted June 4, 2009 I hope it's true, because they're absolutely owning us in the traveling fans category. How is it that we can get several thousand in LA for a game in December but about 12 in Pittsburgh for the SCF? There HAS to be something else going on. Whatever they're doing, I wish we'd do the same though--the amount of noise when they score at the Joe is flat-out embarrassing. I did see more than one Wings fan last night...but the ones I saw seemed like they were mostly wearing white jerseys. Gotta know where you're going and rock the red as they say in DC. This will answer all the questions about Wings fans in other U.S. states. http://cmsimg.detnews.com/apps/pbcsi.dll/b...0403&Ref=H3
miller76 463 Report post Posted June 4, 2009 I have family in the Pittsburgh area. So going to Mellon Arena was always on the agenda when I was in town. I have never been impressed. They were long over due for a new building there. The new ECHL team that plays the next town over from me is bigger than Mellon Arena. Talking to some Pens fans when I was in Detroit for games 1 and 2. They said they made the drive, cause tix there in Pitt were not available. They felt they had a better chance at seeing their team in Detroit. The Capitals have been doing this for a few seasons now themselves. Ted Leonsi, who is one of the primary owners there in Washington, has talked openly about restricted ticket sales for their home playoff games. He is on xm 204 in the mornings about once a month, talking openly about this and other topics not usually discussed freely.

I think the seating at the Joe just looks more used. Personally I like it at the Joe, it has tradition. The rafters are the best though for sure.
