Any Chance Tavares Replaces Crosby as the New NHL Poster Boy?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

It would seem Crosby doesnt have what it takes to be the poster boy, he lacks the temperment and attitude as well as class to do so. Betmans wish for the Pens to be the new dynasty isnt going to happen either, i dont see them winning this series yet(although it‘s possible) and looking at their salary cap situation next year, its worse then ours, they will lose atleast any combos of 3 good wingers or Dmen next year...their depth was their weakness already, now its a real problem.

I just feel bettman and his cronies have failed with the Crosby and Pitts experiment and might start hyping Tavares(unless he flops) as the next poster boy. Its a move i see as being inevitable. Tavares seems to have the better temperment and attitude at an earlier age. What do you guys think?

Toews IMO. The kid is like Lidstrom 2.0.

Well, not really like Lids at all except that he's like a robot (canadian forward...not really swedish defender).

But a great kid, great talent, nice guy, never says anything bad about his opponents, never cheap shots, etc.

Original six captain at a really young age, too, with a lot of talent around him.

Um, since when do marketable or used players often in NHL marketing schemes need to have a certain temperament or attitude? Crosby is competitive and gets upset when he loses. Same as Ovechkin. Same as Iginla. Same as Thornton. Same as Chara.

How marketable Tavares is depends on how much the NHL wants to market him, and how he responds to the attention, as in, if he embraces it or not. Whether or not he gets pissed on the ice when his team is losing has nothing to do with it.

He wouldnt be a bad choice, however if its one thing he lacks (atleast so far) to become the next star is a bit more scoring. Hes 70 point guy so far...he might up production as he gets older, but i was thinking the superstar talent is to a degree lacking. Not saying hes not a very good player at an early age...etc etc...

Toews is probably the next Yzerman.

Crosby will still be the most marketed player until he passes his prime/retires. There is no chance they would jump ship based on this one series. Players get mad. They get frustrated. Crosby has been mucking it up with other players in a very trying time for his team. Big deal.

the NHLs poster boy should have already proven himself to be a perennial all star and very well respected league wide. and he should be more than just a goal scorer. he should be a great all around hockey player, because hockey is more than just scoring goals.

if tavares can accomplish this, he should replace crosby, especially since crosby doesnt deserve to the poster boy to begin with.

Crosby helps sell the game. No doubt, from a marketing standpoint, he stands at the top in embracing the spotlight. Proof in the pudding is the people who come to see Crosby and sales of his merchandise. No other player in the league can do more right now. I really don't get why so many Red Wings fans are such ideologues about a very simple thing, ending up being in denial about Crosby's effect on selling the NHL.

no I really don't think so.. I think Tavares will be a guy who gets tucked away and ignored at times but he'll always be one of the most dangeorus goal scoring threats and can single handedly turn a game around... kind of like Rick Nash, and how often do you hear about Rick Nash?

Why does the NHL think that people outside of Pittsburgh need to see Crosby so much anyway? The league has a ton of tremendous young superstars and they need to spread the marketing around to make it look like it is a league full of elite hockey players playing at the highest level. Instead, they are trying to shove Crosby this and Crosby that down everyones throats and I'm pretty sure most people are getting sick of seeing his face everywhere. What good is to try to make the "casual" fan only see Crosby? Especially when Crosby's own team even has a better player than him! They need to broaden their marketing to showcase how great the entire league is...not just Cindy Crosby.

Thornton, Naslund, Kovalchuk, Turco, Ovechkin, Sundin, Theodore, Lecavalier, Richards, Sedin twins, Ray, Havlat, Phaneuf, and on and on. Just off the top of my head regarding promos and commercials.

People with a Crosby obsession remind me of the Flamingos song "I Only Have Eyes for You". You give more attention to Crosby than the NHL even does.

Uh, that's kinda how marketing works in professional sports. Sean Avery, for example, is the NHL's "bad boy."

I think the league gave Sid the Messiah mantle at too young an age. I can see him becoming an Yzerman type at some point down the road. But right now? I just flat-out don't like the guy. And it seems a lot of people feel the same.

Uh, the NHL doesn't market Avery. Can't even be put in the same light as any of the aforementioned names, including Crosby. Also, if you continued to read that post you might have read some part of:

Whether or not he gets pissed on the ice when his team is losing has nothing to do with it.

Just like his being upset on the ice has nothing to do with his marketability, you and "a lot of people" you cite not liking him has no bearing on the fact that he's the most marketable player the NHL has right now, proven, once again, by the positive attention (i.e. revenue, meaning people come to watch him and buy merchandise) he helps bring. He's a face and a brand and he sells. 'nuff said.

does market drive demand or does the demand drive the market? if you continuously hear that the iphone is the best phone and see highlights of what it can do, you might want an iphone. If you see commercials showing the best parts of a movie, youll probably want to see that movie. if you see commercials and highlights of a hockey player, youll probably be a fan of that hockey player. hence why companies advertise. to produce a desire. look at the snuggie. do you think people were sitting around saying id love a blanket with sleeves? of course not, but they saw an infomercial and got one. theyve sold millions of snuggies because the market produced a desire.

my point is this, while crosby played for rimouski, the NHL was marketing him. they dubbed him the next one. they made him enticing. people wanted to see crosby, not because of what he has done, but because they heard over and over how good he is. how could people watch him for what he has done when he hasnt done anything yet? so people tuned in, and they were treated to an extremely gifted hockey player, and they liked what they saw, so they became fans. im not trying to say he isnt a great hockey player, because id look absolutely foolish. crosby is a great hockey player, but the NHL created his marketability, and thats where i take issue. he didnt deserve to be the poster boy of the new nhl before he took a pregame warmup in the nhl.

I do not have much knowledge of draft or prospects but I gotta just say Tavares cannot replace Crosby. At this point, the NHL mainly focuses on Crosby to gain back the popularity it lost by the lock-out in 04-05 season. There are few things why I think Tavares cannot replace Crosby: (must not be exact but just my opinions)

1.When Crosby was in a junior team, Gretzky visited the place Crosby was living. Since, Gretzky mentioned that if there is anyone who can break his magnificient career record, that would be this kid: Sidney Crosby. However, Tavares does not have much contact with legends as much as Crosby did when he was young.

2.If I remeber correctly, when the time to choose the first rounder came to close, no one doubted Crosby's skill and talent. Not surprisingly, he was selected overall first. On the other hand, Tavares' skill is doubted by many draft scouting people. Many of scouting people state that Tavares' skill is good and his positioning to score a goal is better than Crosby but his skating can be a different factor while Crosby has a good skating skill.

It can be biased by me and other specialists but as much as more Penguins fans are made in new town, it is not a bad idea for the NHL because it can regain the profit. However, I highly doubt Tavares has that much of star-power. Sure, no one knows what can happen in the future; for example, Patrick Stefan who was selected by the Stars overall first does not even play in the NHL. I saw some of Tavares' games but he is not a game changer like Ovechkin and Crosby. He seriously needs someone to support him.

When the business wants to expand its own capacity, it looks forward to get a hero to advertise it. It looks to me that the NHL states Crosby lifts back the Penguins from the depression and brainwash people Crosby as a hero.

Besides, it can be also an example of Stamkos but Crosby has a supporter whose name is Malkin while Stamkos does not have that talented supporter. Same with Tavares. Likely now, the Islanders or 2nd draft team will pick him up. Most likely 1st although Hedman is a terrific defense-man. I highly doubt he can do everything to make the Islanders good

sure he has a chance... unless he bombs like what was his name again... stamwho? <_< <_<

Stamkos scored 23 goals as an 18-year old. That hardly spells 'bust' to me.

Not if Tavares ends up with the Isles.

I actually think that's a point in his favor. Yes, the Islanders are a contender for the worst-run team in sports (all due respect to you Lions fans), but it's still New York. Sort of. Big market, does more for the NHL if they're successful than Pittsburgh does IMO. And the Isles aren't really any worse off than the Pens pre-Crosby.

He's Canadian, seems like he has a decent head (although I said the same of Crosby at this stage, so who knows) and has been hyped ad nauseum. Maybe not to Crosby levels, but not far behind that. To me the deciding factor is this: does he win? He's going to need to make the Isles competitive one way or another--if they end up battling the Pens and Caps for Eastern Conference supremacy with Tavares leading the way, then it could definitely happen. But poster boys generally don't play for non-playoff teams.

Even with all that, it would still take a few years. It's not like they're just going to snap their fingers and say "no, you have to like this guy now."

I fail to see how 23 goals and 46 points in 79 games on arguably the worst team in the NHL as an 18 year old is bombing.

While you're right in most of this, you're completely ignoring a marketability factor he has. The NHL couldn't just inherently decide to market a certain player as their brand name and it inherently be successful. And it wasn't just the NHL that was touting Sidney Crosby as the next Gretzky. The media gladly went along, so did his teammates, so did his coaches, so did players across every league he's played for. Even IF he's a whiner, there's no mistake he's better than any other player right now at selling the game. And that right there is what many Red Wings fans have a problem with, and get jealous of, for no good reason at all.

Seriously? Crosby is better than Ovechkin or say? A healthy Marion Gaborik. While I think that Crosby is a great Hockey player, his Media Hype seems to be greater. What ever happened to accomplishments? Even the greats like Wayne and Stevie Y had to prove themselves.
