frederick9125 0 Report post Posted June 26, 2009 www.thefourthperiod.com According to the Detroit Booth News, contract talks between the Red Wings and star forward Marian Hossa have yet to bear any fruit. Hossa is believed to be looking for a deal worth around $6 million per season, on a long-term agreement. However, while Detroit interest in a lengthy deal, the Booth News claims the Wings might not be able to afford to sign him to a deal worth much more than $4 million per year. Wings GM Ken Holland and Hossa's agent, Ritch Winter, are expected to continue negotiations following the NHL Entry Draft. Hossa, who made $7.45 million this past season, can become an unrestricted free agent July 1.

rick zombo 3,739 Report post Posted June 26, 2009 6M is a "fairly" reasonable amount for Hosaa. The 4M number that has been floating around is insulting to Hossa. I could see Holland chipping that 6M down to 5-5.5M maybe, but that still doesn't explain how he could clear the cap space to sign him.

Scotty 0 Report post Posted June 26, 2009 6 million is definitely a "reasonable" amount for a player like Hossa, but if he want's to stay in Detroit and win, he's going to have to take somewhere around 5 million.
RedFX 48 Report post Posted June 26, 2009 I agree with you 100% Jeff Finger is $3.5M player and Hossa should play for $4M?! $6M is reasonable amount for him... These negotiations aren't going to be about what Hossa is worth. We all know he was easily worth the 7-8 million teams were offering him last year. These negotiations are simply going to be what is the minimum Hossa would be willing to take to play with the Red Wings. I don't like the concept, but welcome to the NHL in the Cap-Era

xtrememachine1 795 Report post Posted June 26, 2009 6M is a "fairly" reasonable amount for Hosaa. The 4M number that has been floating around is insulting to Hossa. You guys aren't getting it. Hossa isn't be offered $4 mil per year. That's not the offer. The CAP HIT will be $4 mil per year. The deal that the Wings supposedly have on the table pay Hossa $7 mil for the first six years and $1 mil for the last six. By the time he's 36, he'll either retire or the Wings will buy out his contract. Its the same thing they did with Zetterberg and Franzen.

zetterbergfan 23 Report post Posted June 26, 2009 19th round? That could be one of us! Lord, why could I have not been born with just enough talent to get drafted in the "19th round" and play for the LEAGUE MINIMUM for just ONE YEAR! Then I could afford a house, a car, pay off my debts, retire, and put my kids through college... It's a shame Hossa isn't going to get paid "what he is worth" ! Snazzy 0 Report post Posted June 26, 2009 Holland can make 6 million work for 8 years and extend his contract to 12 years. This way the last 4 years will be nickles that brings the cap hit down. 7.5mil, 7.5mil, 7.5mil, 7.5mil, 7.0mil, 6.5mil, 6.0mil, 4.5mil, 3.5mil, 2.5mil, 1mil, 1mil = 62 million / 5.15 cap hit ^Just an example. You can work the numbers any way you want, but the last 2 years will be the drop off point.
titanium2 867 Report post Posted June 26, 2009 No room for another 6 million dollar player on this roster Sorry. It's just a negotiation stage. There's still a real possibility that both parties will move and settle on some number +/- the $5mil compromise. Strangely enough I think Hossa needs the Wings more than the Wings need Hossa. Maybe 4.5 or 4.7?
