Kopecky to test the open market

I would guess Babs really likes his size and the potential upside of someone with that kind of size. He just needs a good mentor.

I don't like seeing anyone leave the Wings. I always hoped for the best for Kopy, especially when he was promoted to the Datsyuk-Hossa line.

Good post. Very fair.

That sounds like a smart move, so obviously KH would think of it. Never a bad day as a Wings fan.

I really like Downey but he's really no upgrade over Kopy. He can fight better, but he's not really a better hockey player.

Definitely need to try and retain Leino, but I'd love to be able to keep the other two.

Good points.

For Christ's sake. Downey had no hockey skills. He can fight and that's it. It's not 1990. Move on....

I wouldn't doubt if the NHL only rasied the cap by so little just so the Wings CAN'T re-sig Hossa. It's not out o the question for Bettman ad the boyz to try to handcuff the Wings. Although, this also handcuffs his pretty boy team the Pitts as well.

Anyhow, if Hossa does not resig, then what kind of cap hit wouldit take to get Tanguay and Yelle both together here? I kow Tanguay made over $5 million last year, is he due a raise or is he at the where his salary starts to go down? Yelle only made $750,000 in Boston and is 5 years older than Alex, but if we could get them both for a $4 million cap hit, would they be worth it? They had great chemistry in Colorado together...

Stick to NHL 2009. We are not going shopping.....And it's not a conspiracy against the Wings.

Where do people come up with this crap...

 Such a negative nancy! Say goodbye to Hudler dude, face it, he sucks.... NHL 2009? I wouldn't even be able to tell you the first thing about NHL 2009. Nothing wrong with posing a question about a cap hit for a tandem that had great chemistry together. There's no doubt we need something new here and I said if Hossa doesn't re-sig...

If Hossa doesn't, what do you think we are going to keep the same team that lst last year mins Hossa? NO. McCarty is not gooing toplay in Detroit, Hudler is gone, Sammy, Kopecky, Chelios, Conklin, gone... Maybe you should play the NHL 2009 a bit more and see what it's like NOT icing the same old team every year without making ANY changes...

Go back to bed and try again, right now you are no better than all the pens trolls that hung around here...

With Hossa gone, why in hell are you axing half the team? Conk, Sammy and Hudler could easily be re-signed, with keeping the Aces.

Well to play Devil's Advocate. The team this past season minus Hossa won the cup. This team with Hossa lost the Cup. AppleFritters and Leino and Helm all playing a full season will help tremendously. I know AppleFritters is slated to play for the Griffs, but when he gets his chance to shine the trio of Helm, Leino, AD combined are more of a weapon then the floater Hossa. Shin pad Sammy sucks and Hudler is a fourth line player who is used as a PP specialist. Koko was a pylon out there and Cheli didn't play enough to make an impact recently.

So in short. We are not icing the same team. We're losing Hossa who did s*** in the playoffs. A Pylon, a shin pad hunter and a back-up goalie are leaving. We're adding a second line player, a third line checker, and a formidable 4th line threat. Plus, since we are the Red Wings, we get five cool points. Do you even know how much five cool points go for on the open market!!!

No. After brining up Ericsson/Helm/Howard/Abdelkader, re-sigging Leino at a modest raise of $950,000, we will only have $1.5m left. Hudler will get more than that, he won't take less. Sammy could be the one to re-sig at $1,000,000. If you re-sig Conklin, he would probably as for a raise, Howard's cap is only $717,000. Assuming Lilja is healthy enough to play, Meech can double up as your 13th forward and 8th defensman with Lebda being the 7th. You pretty much have to decide whether to offer Sammy a million to be #12, or look elswhere, because Sammy will probably get more than that somewhere else. Again, HUDLER IS NOT GOING TO SIGN FOR $1.5M OR LESS. GOOD BYE HUDLER! Even if you keep Adbelkader in GRR, that will give you $2.3M. Are you going to give Hudler the remaining cap space you have? Let him go...

I don't know what Hudler would command, definaely more than he could get in Detroit (I'd love to see him stay) but I don't think Abdelkader will be up this year. More likely Leino, but not both, I don't think. I just don't think Holland wants to lose Leino, and didn't he say he'd go back to Europe if he didn't play next year? I do see Sammy staying. My 2 cents.

He's made Holland and Babcock look stupid these last couple of years.

Let's hope this stiff doesn't come back to this organization ever again. Hopefully he goes to the KHL.

You don't like Kopey as a 4th line player (fine, I can't disagree much- he literally only had monents), and Holland and Babcock are stupid? WTF? Really? How does that make them stupid? At worst, they gambled on a FOURTH LINER WITH SIZE. What's the loss? We didn't loss anybody due to this. Are you complaining about Cheli staying an extra year and us losing Quincey? No... that would make sense. You ***** about Kopey. And a lack of fights. (How did Kopey get hurt again? And Lilja... how did he get injured...?) I thought mindfly was bad, but you do this passive aggressive s*** too much. Just admit you enjoy the Wing's shortcomings and move on. Lord knows you never embrace their accomplishments.

Imagine if instead of wasting money on him, Helm or Abdelkalder could have been on the roster for the entire season instead?

Kopecky had one good moment here in 3 years (his fight with Sharp). Holland and Babcock kept faith in him and even tried to give the fool some more playing time at several points in the season with not much success. He basically wasted a roster spot that could have gone to much more physical 4th liners.

Yeah, Holland and Babcock dropped the ball with the 4th line this year. If we had more fighters and real 4th liners, we wouldn't need someone like Kopecky fighting.

Helm and Abbie would have been "more fighters"? Dude, you are ridiculous.

I'm not saying Kopey was deserving of his roster spot- I'm saying him having it doesn't make Holland or Babcock "stupid". That's just retarded.

I didn't say Helm or Abby specifically are fighters and you know it, so why even bother misquoting me?

And yes, Kopecky did make them look bad. Their job is to avoid making such mistakes and there's nothing wrong with criticizing them for it, or for any other mistakes they might make in the future. I don't think I stepped out of bounds at all.

Excuse me if I actually have the gall to come on here and criticize our staff for playing Kopecky over Helm these last 2 seasons.

You know just as well as anybody that 'misjudgment' was due to a red tape issue more than anything else.

Does that make it "not a mistake"? Somewhat, because you have, what was it?, 650k being taken up by one player and you're not going to play him when you have to roll four lines?

OK- Kopey kept Helm and Abbie out of the line up, but you are saying they could have been replaced with... a fighter? If this fighter can't get in on the fifth line, I'm not sure I want him. Also, I never misquoted you. I only extended logic to your posts.

So now Holland and Babcock just look "bad". OK. But you said "stupid", I believe. Please correlate these two words and get back to me.

Oh, please criticize. My issue is you never say anything positive and ignore obvious points. You won't talk about how Kopey & Lilja got hurt... but you want fighters... who we'd have if non-fighters Helm and Abbie didn't get shafted out of line up spots... which proves Holland and Babcock are stupid. That's your logic. Sorry, man.

I have work tomorrow, man. See you later.

That's why they should have tried to find some way to dump him last season, and kept Helm on the roster after the way he played in the 2008 playoffs.

That red tape is called misjudgment, as are Maltby and Draper's contributions to the 4th line at this point in their careers.

I want Helm, Abby and a fighter on the 4th line. Nothing complicated about that. Several people will of course have to go off the 4th line for that to happen.

And what do your care what I call Holland and Babcock? It's all just semantics and I'm calling them out a little for what I think was an error in judgment.

As far as me not talking about Lilja's fights........

It's just how they do business. The Wings don't drop players recovering from injuries. On top of that, in the case of a potential trade, who wants a player recovering from an injury?

Also, Kenny said, and I agree with this, that he didn't want Helm to just be a grinder that played 9 minutes a game because he's capable of so much more. He just had to develop it at the minor league level.
