Holland "Not Optimistic" about re-signing Hossa

Bye bye Marian.

I'm not dissapointed myself. Can't pay a guy who didn't show up when we needed him that kind of money. Better to spend it on our own players from our own system who've bleed and won here (Huds for one).

:puke: Huds failed more miserably in the playoffs!

Hossa @ $6 milllion is far better than Hudler @ $10.00, yes thats ten dollars. Hudler... BYE BYE!

If Kenny is only offering around $4 mil and Hossa wants $6 mil, it shouldn't take long for Kenny to realize a deal isn't going to happen. If this was the case, I think we would have heard some kind of news saying the Wings are shopping Hossa, since another team is going to need time before free angency to negotiate. The longer it goes without news, the more it makes me think they're in serious negotiations and he will sign.

Agreed. If they were at a deadlock, we would have heard by now.

the snip

When Hossa spurned more than 8 million a season to sign with Detroit at a discount, everyone cheered. After all, it was only about 5-10% discount of a years salary to sign with Detroit Well worth the chance to win the cup. Now, wings fans are expecting him to take more of a discount to play for the Wings to the tune of about 40-50% discount.

It is final, someone on this board obtains it. You will be more best without it!

This would be nice, but this can also turn into a nightmare scenario. The Wings can negotiate until 11:59 AM on Wednesday and walk out empty handed when they had the opportunity to gain by trading Hossa's rights. Also, longer negotiations hinder the Wings to make decisions on Sammy and Hudler. I'm just glad that Kenny is at the head of the table. If there is any man in the world that can get Hossa to take less than he is worth to stay with the Wings it is Kenny Holland.

I don't expect Hossa to sign for all the reasons everyone has mentioned. However I am curious as to why there has been no news. As they say, "No news is good news."

It seems to me that Hossa hasn't flat out rejected the contract yet and Holland is respecting that and giving him time to think things through rather than force his hand. They could also be discussing adding a year or two to the contract.

7 7 7 7 7 5 4 3 2 1 1 1

That's a 4.3 million dollar cap hit and 52 million in guaranteed funds.

Someone mentioned earlier that because Hossa is under 35 even if he were to retire that we would be on the hook for his full cap hit. Actually the opposite it true, if a player signs his contract before 35 and retires his contract isn't guaranteed. The only other rule I know of is that the salary cannot drop more than 50% between any given years. I really don't think the league could say anything about a 12 year contract length as if is not completely unrealistic and within the current rules of the CBA. Expect this loop hole to be plugged in the next agreement.

I dunno why there seems to be more optimism right now

Because Holland said he'd trade Hossa's rights and the new team would have 48 hours to work out a contract with him. Matheson's article said Hossa's rights would be traded by Monday unless progress was being made. If there was no progress being made, Holland would have traded his rights to someone by now. Either that or Holland is fielding various offers for Hossa's negotiating rights.

Malik has a blurb up hinting that L.A. may not even be interested in Hossa. Given how hesitant teams were at trading during the draft it may just be that he isn't getting much in terms of offers for his rights and is holding out for a last minute biscuit.

Bye Hossa~! I'd gladly take some gritty forwards like Neil over him, he can have his 40 goals per year, then choke in the playoffs elsewhere.

Buhbye!
